Vehicle shakes excessively upon applying brakes. According to numerous inspection reports problem is with rotors. Jeep installed defective rotors. Started at 10,000 miles. Manufacturer refuses to replace. Numerous other Jeep Grand Cherokee (year 2000) experience same problem. Serious safety issue !!! how much longer before a fatality occurs ?

Grand Cherokee

  • miles
Upon applying the brakes, the vehicle shakes excessively, including the steering wheel. According to the dealer mechanic's report, the problem is attributed to warped rotors. Numerous other owners of the same vehicle I encountered have experienced the same problem at mileage below 10,000 miles. The problem is not attributed to normal wear and tear or driving habits as expressed by the dealer, but rather to defective manufactured installed rotors. I was informed that earlier versions ( 1998, 1999) of this vehicle were recalled for defective rotors. I am concerned of the safety issues involved due to the operator's inability to control the vehicle upon applying the brakes.

First time Chrysler replaced the front rotors free of charge. The second time I was told that was not covered under warrenty and all three of four rotors were turned at my cost. The third time I had a local garage turn all four rotors due to warpage. The car now is starting to show warpage again. The steering wheel shakes uncontrollable when braking at 60 mph with the warped rotors. I have written a letter to Chrysler and they have stated "not covered under warrenty and that they have not heard of any problems". central garage told me that they see alot of Jeep like mine with warped rotors. I have contacted other Jeep garages and they all stated that they see alot of my style of Jeep with warped rotors. This is major safety feature on my car and I feel that Chrysler should engineer a solution. I shouldn't have to have my brakes repaired every 5-6000 miles to keep my car safe to drive and spend $400-$500 to do so.

Brake rotors warp and warp and warp. A $30,000 car/SUV with a braking system that is a total engineering failure. Now with 40,000 miles, I've had the brake rotors turned three times! the dealer would do nothing the first time because brakes were not covered on the warranty. I'll never buy another Jeep.

Jan 012000

Grand Cherokee 4WD

  • miles
Front wheels shimmy violently when braking at 40-50 mph causing the car to be hard to control. This is caused by rotor overheating and warping due to design defect. There was 75% pad remaining at 15,000 mile service, I have towing package, and I have never towed anything. Therefore my driving habits are not to blame. This is an extremely unsafe design defect that does not provide sufficient cooling. This is a known problem that Jeep is ignoring.
