This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Sevre brake shudder when slowing from highway speeds. Brakes pulsate when applied on in town driving. We own 2, Jeep Grand Cherokee and have the same problem with both vehicles. Parts were backordered which indicates the demand is greater than the supply. I believe Chrysler knows they have a problem but are failing to consider the safety of consumers. We contacted Chrysler to see if we could get them warrantied. One they did the other they denied. This is our 3rd Jeep purchase. We really do like the vehicles but if we can't get some satisfaction it may very well be the last ones we buy.
Whenever pushing on ABS braking system, they would fail to engage. Would be vibrating. Aluminum rims were cracked. When shifting into 4-wheel drive would smell something burning. Taking vehicle to dealership. Also, the transmission failed to shift correctly.
When slowing down from 65 to 55 or less steerling wheel will shake while applying brakes took to dealership and they said its not that bad yet. Could be balance of tires or brakes. Will take back for the third time.
Regarding the brakes: After repeated (3 times) complaints about the brake pedal going all the way to the floor (when driven under stop and go commuter-type traffic) and each time there was "no trouble found" I finally (on 7/29/2000) drove into the dealership with the pedal all the way down to the floor. A mechanic was called and said there was definitely a problem and they summized "it must be the master cylinder". with respect to the engine: After repeated complaints (at least 3 times) of oil leaking from under the engine and having it dismissed as 1) sloppy oil change, excess oil from left on engine block, 2) faulty oil filter, 3) rear main engine seal (rear main was replaced) and continuing to have oil leaks, on 7/29/2000, I brought it in and the dealership says the engine is "porous" and the entire engine needs replacement. I was advised to not take the vehicle due to the brake issue. The vehicle is at the dealership awaiting arrival of a new engine and replacement and also installation of the master cylinder. With respect to the differential whine, I have been told twice "it is normal" and nothing will be done..
The first week I owned my brand new vehicle, it started clunking and jerking. Several weeks later, they replaced the drive shaft. I continue to have similar and other problems with the transmission, gear shifting, brakes, etc...I inquired of the dealership whether or not there were any reported manufacturers defects and they said no. They lied.
