In regards to your ongoing investigation into the automatic transmission shifting from park to reverse when ideling, this has happened to me twice since I have owned this vehicle, approx. 4 months. The first time, when parked on my level driveway, the second, when sitting in a mcdonald's drive-thru line, also level. No one was injured and no damage from hitting other objects, but it scared the crap out of me. Now, I put the emergency brake on when I idle in park for long periods. I called a Jeep dealer about it, and they said "I wasn't paying attention". please do something about this, I don't want to see anyone get hurt or killed.
Vehicle was in park position, idling, when it jumped into reverse position and ran over a friend who was taking a night deposit for a business. The body of the vehicle was not damaged as the vehicle stopped against a curb in the bank parking lot and occurred around midnight when no others were in the parking lot. She was taken to northeast Georgia medical center where she was treated for related injuries on another date as well. She was then seen by dr. Rios who was the workman's comp. Doctor. She has been released from his care but still suffers from neck problems and anxiety about it happening again. We would like to have the transmission repaired so we can eliminate that fear. We were not at all sure why this happened, but when we saw info on a possible recall on the internet that described exactly what happened, we felt it necessary to report our incident.

I have provided the details, due to a news article that I have just read, that the NHTSA is investigating a possible defect with the 1995 model of the Jeep Grand Cherokee inadvertently going into reverse. On the morning of 12/20/1994 @ 5.30 am it was very cold, and I drove my Jeep out of the garage, put it into park, and got out of my Jeep to close the garage doors, leaving my drivers door open, and after about a minute I heard the Jeep's engine tone change, looked up to see the Jeep reversing back, I just managed to get out of the way, and the Jeep came back into the garage, removing the open drivers door. I reached in as it was moving and turned the ignition off. I knew the vehicle had a problem, and it was looked at by both the dealer and the manufacturer, who refused to repair under warranty. Although today I no longer own the vehicle, the dealer has all the complaint details. About 1 year later, the same problem happened again in a car park with the same vehicle. My wife and I pulled into a car parking bay, put the vehicle into park, left the engine running whilest we sat in the car and talked, suddenly after about 30 secs the Jeep started to move back. Again I quickly turned the ignition off. Again I complained to the dealer, who remembered the same problem earlier, but stated that Jeep had not issued any recall if there was an problem, so once again they just past it off as misoperation on my part. I would be extremely pleased to support the NHTSA with any further help/info, due to my experience, I know a real defect exists with this model/year of Jeep.

My husband had started the car and was sitting in the drivers seat. I was putting the baby in the car seat and had problems tightening the car seat. He came out to help me with the car seat, then the car began to back up. He quickly jumped back in to stop the car, however it had already hit the pole with the door and cracked the passenger mirror. He insisted he had it in park. I assumed he was at fault, however after hearing the reports, I believe it is possible that the car jumped out of park while idling.
My Jeep rolled into reverse when I had it parked. I jumped into it and put it back into park. I just hurt my arm- not serious. However, I had to have the transmission rebuilt as it slipped a lot and failed around 58,000K.
I was washing my Jeep in my drive way, when it just started rolling towards me. Scared the hell out of me, and when I check inside my gear was in reverse. I didn't hit, almost, but no damage. Just want to make sure it doesnt' happen ever again.
There were two incidents: One in August of 2000 and one in February of 2001. Both times the car was idling in park and went into reverse without a driver in the car and caused a near accident. In the second incident, our one-year-old son was in his car seat in the car. We are very worried about this problem and would like it fixed. Thank you.
