CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2019 Cherokee is racking up engine complaints for suddenly shutting down while driving. But the problem could possibly be related to the increasingly defective 9-speed transmission which suffers from hard shifts, lurching problems, and a wiring harness defect that can cause sudden shutdowns or an unexpected shift into neutral.

When driving mostly at highway speeds but sometimes at lower speeds the steering gets tight when making a slight adjustment to the steering, which makes me pull it harder to get it loose and then have to over compensate to get the vehicle back in a straight line. This is extremley dangerous because it has caused me to run off the highway and come very close to hitting other vehicles. I have had it in the shop at the dealership 3 times and Chrysler looked at it and said this is normal with the electronic speed sensitive steering. This should not be normal because it is putting my life in danger. This issue has been since I bought the vehicle August 2018.

While the vehicle's engine is running, regardless of the gear selection, there is a slight jerking of the steering wheel. This jerking occurs at random with no other noticeable issues. This issue is not "throwing" a code and dealership is claiming there is no issue found. Odometer is at 10340 miles. This is a dangerous issue as it could cause my vehicle to collide with another vehicle or object if not resolved. Issue occurs when vehicle is stationary or in motion and occurs approximately every minute or so. It occurs on city streets as well as highway. It occurs while driving in a straight line or during a turn. There is no specific driving condition that resolves the problem or worsens the problem.

When driving at expressway / highway speeds of 60 plus for a non stop 30-50 miles, there is almost like a "dead spot" in the steering. When I move the steering wheel about 1/4" to the left or the right it feels like it is catching on something when making small wheel adjustments within your own lane, it almost feels as if your tires break loose, but on dry pavement. When the steering then catches. It also feels like there is gust of wind on both sides of the vehicle. It then jerks back and forth. There is also a burning smell for a short period of time. This started at 5500 miles. I have a 2019 Jeep overland. It could easily become dangerous. Had it at zeigler Jeep in schaumburg il on 11/9/2019 and they recoded module and cound not recreat the proble. It has been happening more and more frequently since then. Went back on 12/26/19 and took the tech for a 1.5 hour test drive and everything happened as stated above. The tech finally re-created the problem. My new 2019 Jeep overland has been in the shop since then. They are sending engineers in from Jeep. All I want is a safe car. Ps; this is my first Jeep product.

  • 6,000 miles
I purchased a new 2019 Jeep Cherokee on 6/29/19 with less than 5 miles on odometer. On 9/7/19 (less than 1K miles), I started car, drove halfway down block and the steering completely locked. Power steering light went on and car was not drivable. Called dealership, who was very accommodating, and they towed the car and gave us a loaner. After several days, the dealer was unable to come up with a solution so they opened a case with Chrysler. After three weeks, the entire steering column was replaced, which seems like a safety issue in itself so I did not take the car on the highway or on long trips. For the first couple of weeks, the repair seemed fine, but then the steering column/wheels started making loud grinding noises and thumps while parking and pulling out of parking spaces. Now it is happening while I am driving, louder and lasting longer. I have had two scary instances of steering/wheels grinding, thumping, locking while changing lanes and I have no control of the steering for 10-20 sec. It happened again today (12/30/19) while driving in a parking lot. The steering locked while I made a slight turn going approx 5mph, and the grinding/thumping was so loud and strong that it felt like the whole front end of the car was going to fall off. This lasted longer, around 20sec, and then the car just drove completely normal. I have also had multiple instances of feeling that I have zero control of the steering and that my wheels are not on the road. No noise, no locking up, just no control of the vehicle at all. This is my third 4X4 and my second Jeep, so I am well aware of how to drive the car and how it should handle. This is not normal and, quite honestly, I feel like this car is going to kill someone. Taking back to the dealership tomorrow so their repair dept can troubleshoot. This car is not safe to drive.

When driving on the freeway after about 20 minutes the vehicle appears to get a "dead spot" in the steering. When I move the steering wheel about 1/4" to the left or the right it feels like it is catching on something. I dropped it off at the dealership today and after about 6 hours they called and told me it was fixed. They said there was just an update that needed done on the steering. I will be picking it up later and will see if it is corrected. Vehicle has 28K miles on it.

When driving at highway speeds in a straight line, I experience a 'dead spot' or slippage with the power steering. Mostly noticed turning the steering wheel slightly to to the right to make small adjustments. While making the steering input, nothing will happen at first, then as more pressure is applied, the steering will 'jump' slightly and catch. The effect is that it feels like you're driving on a very windy day when it's not windy at all.

As I was traveling about 30mph my power steering locked up. I wasn't able to turn the wheel at all. A service power steering light came upon my dash. When I called the dealership they refused to let me tow it there or fix it even though it was less than 6 months old and under warranty. I ended up having it towed there anyways without telling them. It was just a code that had to be cleared but they made me pay 120$ for labor even though it was under warranty and at no fault to my own. This is the only problem I've had with this vehicle other than that I love it. If I were in a different situation although it could have been very dangerous and I was very unhappy the way the dealership treated me.

Over the last four weeks the steering has developed a 'dead zone'. the steering will jerk when pulled out of this 'dead zone'. 2019 Jeep Cherokee limited 4 X 4, in service on 4/2019, with 13,700 miles as of 10/27/19. In last two days steering wheel is jerking in my hands, as though the lane sense feature is trying to bring vehicle into center of lane. That feature is disengaged and is never used. The jerk is slight but perceptible and always seems to be in a left to right motion. Since I live in country and travel roads with speeds at 65+, great concern that this issue may lead to a failure of the steering system or steering wheel itself. Had a similar issue many years ago with a Ford vehicle, which resulted in a recall after the steering wheel on my vehicle actually came off the column and spilled bearings on the floor.

While driving, mostly down the highway, my Cherokee will have slipping/breakaway int the steering tension. It happens when moving the wheel in both directions. I drive an hour for work, and it happens probably 30 times minimum driving one way. This had happened previously and I had it looked at and they couldn't find anything. It stopped happening for a while after that (not sure if they did something), but is again doing it. I had it recently in to a Jeep dealer for service on other issues and let them know about this and they indicated they didn't find anything right then, and didn't have more time to look into it. I let them know I feared for my safety (hoping I don't lose control). I also had let them know about the recall for the steering rack that I haven't seen shown up on the NHTSA list yet as a formal recall. My appointment is now 3 weeks out, but I want to make sure its documented that I made a complaint in case something happens between now and then. My Jeep has about 27,000 miles on it now.

After driving at freeway speeds of 60-70 mph, the steering begins to pull to the right continuously. Then, without warning, it will suddenly pull to the left, then right, then the steering wheel will start to wobble and shimmy and a sense of loss of control of the vehicle is felt. The entire front end starts to shake. Also, at the time this is occurring, the odor of hot oil permeates the interior of the vehicle. This problem happens every time the vehicle is driven for over an hour at freeway speeds. Once, while this was going on the drive shaft front cv joint seized causing the drive shaft to come off the power transfer unit damaging the ptu output shaft. This vehicle, purchased new, has been in the dealer's repair shop four times for this problem (it is there now). In the past three months, it has been in that shop 65 days (so far). They have replaced the power transfer unit twice, the front cv joint and steering gear shield. This vehicle is unsafe to drive a freeway speeds. The problem appears to be the same one affecting the 2018 and 2019 Jeep Wrangler where the steering issues include shimmying, wobbling, looseness, and locking up. The Jeep dealer where purchased and repairs attempted is dick hannah Jeep, 3517 ne auto mall drive, vancouver, wa 98668.

While driving this morning at 70 mph my 2019 Jeep Cherokee 2.0 turbo lost all power, power steering and power brakes. I fought to pull it off the road. Right when it stalled out the message center stated "auto start/stop not available" and the auto start/stop light illuminated along with the battery light. The 'd' drive indicator on the dash was blinking. Upon stopping and placing the vehicle in park, it turned over but would not start. I placed the vehicle in neutral, and nothing. The car acted as if it were in auto stop as the door chime dinged when the door was open and headlights were off (push button start). Locking the vehicle left the dash lit up like it was running. Chrysler had it towed to the local dealership where it is waiting to be looked at. Had my wife been driving this when it happened she might not have been able to pull to the side of the road with no power steering or brake assist.
