CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2019 Cherokee is racking up engine complaints for suddenly shutting down while driving. But the problem could possibly be related to the increasingly defective 9-speed transmission which suffers from hard shifts, lurching problems, and a wiring harness defect that can cause sudden shutdowns or an unexpected shift into neutral.

About These NHTSA Complaints:
This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
At random times the radio will start changing stations on its own and it will also dial phone numbers. Most recently it dialed 911 while grandkids were in the car. It will also turn the heat or AC on and off, changes temperature settings, sometimes it turns on the backup camera. everything that is on the Uconnect control panel is affected. The only way to get it to stop is to shut the Uconnect radio system off. This is a safety distraction when it starts these problems. From the research I have done other vehicles with this same radio Uconnect system have safety recalls issued, it needs to be extended to all vehicles with this system.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The START/STOP System warning light was illuminated. The contact parked and restarted the vehicle to correct the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
Earlier this month, July, 2024 my car experienced a crash or malfunction of the electrical cluster which has caused all systems like (nav, radio, phone, climate) to not work and automatically turn on and off and switch between apps. Of immediate concern is my car keeps calling 911 after stating the SOS call was unsuccessful. The instrument panel cluster is non operational as stated in the recall. There was a recall for this exact problem stating only 52 Jeep Cherokees were impacted; mine is excluded. The Safety Recall is UC4/NHTSA 18V-917 Instrument Panel Cluster. I believe there is too much of a coincidence between my issue and the exact reason for the recall. I cannot get the company to simply let me talk with someone with knowledge of the recall. Ultimately, I want Chrysler to accept my recall per their own communication around the problem.
1. Component/system failed: PTU 2. My vehicle completely shut off and became disabled while driving - this put my safety and the safety of others at risk. 3. The problem was confirmed at the dealership. 4. The vehicle has been inspected by certified mechanics at the dealership. 5. There were no prior warning lights or signs/symptoms of the problem before failure.
PCM fails intermittently. Dealership is replacing it and has the defective one. Safety is definitely an issue because the vehicle stalls without adequate time to pull off of the road. Unable to move it off the road because it does not engage the transmission. Dealer has been able to replicate and confirmed the problem. Component has not been inspected by anyone other than the mechanic at the dealership. Several warning lights go off just as the problem occurs but not in time to get out of unsafe situations. Recall #18V524000 on 8/8/2018 covers the problem I am experiencing but my vehicle is not in the VIN series covered by the recall. I strongly believe the series my car belongs to should be included. This is a safety issue.

The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at undisclosed speeds, the vehicle turned off unintendedly and failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. An unknown recall repair was performed; however, the failure recurred several times. The vehicle was towed to the same independent mechanic where the cause of the failure was not determined. The contact discovered an unknown recall however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.
When in stop and go traffic, and in a stopped position at the time the screen flash parking brake and the car was unable to move forward. Had to put the car in park, and back into drive before it was able to move. The other incident occurred when the vehicle was backing up, and the accelerator was being pushed the car slammed on the brakes and said parking brake again on the screen. The car does have rear collision warning, however it does not brake automatically. Incident is not able to be reproduced and was inspected by a Jeep dealership which found no issues. Car does not show any additional symptoms.
This is a known issue with Jeep. But they refuse to repair it at no cost. My emergency brake has become corroded due to water leaking into the module and from time to time the emergency brakes will get stuck to the point my car will not move. This recently happened last night when my vehicle was parked in the garage. I had recently been driving through a major rain storm. And upon trying to use my vehicle the next day... The emergency brakes would not release. My mechanic brought his computer over and verified the check engine light was related to the emergency brakes not releasing. This is a definite safety hazard! I have also noticed that certain safety features are being disabled due to the emergency brake not working properly. For example if I leave my Jeep in drive and open the door the emergency brakes should automatically engage disabling roll away. This feature no longer works. Another future, if my driver seat seat belt was not buckled my emergency brake would engage. This is no longer working. I am very concerned about this. There are countless other reports of emergency brake errors. Please issue a recall!
I took my vehicle to a local dealership to have the "auto stop start" system checked. I had a dashboard warning light indicating the system was not working correctly. No other warnings signals were displayed. The dealership performed a diagnostic check but found no problems with the "auto start stop system". The day after I picked up my car, I drove for ten miles and the car overheated. I contacted the dealership and was told to check radiator fluid and drive the car back if possible. I found no radiator fluid in the car. My car required a full engine replacement and several subsequent repairs to exhaust system and driveshaft. An engine can overheat and seize which can cause drivers to lose control and crash. Please note: The original engine was part of recall for oil consumption. Prior to the recall update, I experienced stalling in traffic without warning due to the engine recall.
The engine is stalling while driving and the battery warning will flash across the screen. The battery is not the issue. It was purchased in the last year and has plenty of life left.
Currently the seats sound like they arnt bolted down correctly. Also recently the key fob is failing to unlock the vehicle and its taking multiple trys of pulling the fob out of the ignition and putting it back into the ignition trying it on different sides buying multiple batteries. Also the the vehicle has always gotten stuck in gear, hard shifting.
SUV parking/emergency brake automatically activates without driver doing this. This is what happened: stopped at red light foot on brake. The SUV has the feature to shut the engine off when stopped. Light turns green foot then goes to the gas. When the foot is lifted off the brake, the engine tries to restart and hesitates and at the same time the parking/emergency brake activates without this being activated by driver Unable to move forward more than a few feet and car stalls. Car has to be put in park. Engine completely needs to be turned off by driver. And the emergency/ parking brake shut off. This creates a significant safety risk for the potential of the car(s) behind the SUV accelerating into the back of SUV assuming that the SUV will be moving forward. I have encountered others with a Jeep Cherokee/ Compass with the same issue and cannot understand why there has not been a recall for this. The dealership attributes this to needing a new battery- they replaced this already. No one should have to drive like this. This has been ongoing for a while prior to the miles noted in this report. The symbol with an A and a circle with an arrow at the end of the circle and an ! Appear on the dashboard in orange.
The 4WD service light is on. It isn-??t driving right. The internet says thousands of people have similar issues- all reporting the same thing. And defective PTU units are listed as the cause.
It will occasionally stall to accelerate. As well as the electrical system for radio, thermostat, camera etc in dash won-??t turn on or work intermittently.
While driving, car reved itsself up and when in neutral, sensor said 4wd Neutral Warning Vehicle May move even in park-??..4wd System unavailable service required-??Had a diagnostic done of the sensor light that came on. Diagnostic said codes u0403 for T-Case, C14A7 PTU motor. After much reading and research this same part was recalled in the years 2014-2017 Jeep Trailhawks. The PTU loss power and had me and my family on the side of the hwy! It made some jerking and clicking noise when attempting to switch the gears to drive. There is also an electrical issue where the heat will not stay on selected option. The radio flickers and will not stay on a station. The radio also was powered off and was still playing.
The radio has started switching channels will not stay on one set station. Along with radio switching the touch screen also changes from maps to calling 911 and making sos calls, the back up camera will turn on while driving down roadway. The screen is constantly blinking and changing causes major distraction especially at night when it catches your eye. It is a major distraction while driving.
My car's parking brake comes on during both stopping and driving, especially during acceleration. It recently engaged as my daughter, who was using my car to go Christmas shopping, was accelerating from a stop light and into an intersection. She was almost hit from behind when the brakes locked up in the middle of the intersection.
I have a 2019 jeep cherokee 4wd with 46077 miles. This has never happened before until now. It was dark out heading to work. I came to a stop when I went to go the jeep just literally shut down. Everything turned off- I had no lights, no engine, no warning at all. Would not start at all. I called my husband and when I opened the driver door the jeeps dash finally came on and I tried to start it, wouldn't at first than tried again it started. I turned around and drove back home. Contacted the garage. This is unsafe for anyone to put their life on the line. I was lucky I didn't get hit. I have 5 grandkids and this is not a safe vehicle to drive when there is no warning at all. Luckily It didn't do this on the railroad tracks. The garage told me to take back to the dealership. The dealership said there are no recalls on my vehicle. However, I see other jeep cherokee with the same issues and have recalls. Why risk my life or anyone else. All jeep cherokees of any year or engine size should be taken seriously.
My battery went out and I literally replaced it last year. Also when I replaced it last year the back light would stay on sometimes all night and day I was worried it could start a fire or something dealer didn't even bother checking it and left it like that and replaced the battery. Last month my vehicle wouldn't start and no warning or nothing before it just died on me good thing I had it in my driveway when this happened.
