This vehicle has had electrical problems from the very beginning. As well as the horrible ticking (cylinders not injectors!) mainly at first was the radio would go out. Was not even a month after purchase, dealers answer was to "remove the fuse and push back in and it will work". so I did, shady but I did. Then cruise would not work, would have to pull over shut off vehicle then maybe it would work. Next my car kept burning out headlamps. Friggin expensive (I use silver silverstar ultra headlights for long trips) I'm now on my 8th set. I even contacted the manufacturer to complain about their cheap headlights! oops! then the clicking and popping started with the front wheels first only in reverse then all the time especially while turning. I was past the warranty and because I didn't ask about it before my warranty expired they didn't fix it!!! then the crazy electrical stuff started! my dome light stopped working right so I had to turn it off completely. Then parking tail light stopped working. Finally I went through my third battery and took it to the dealer to ask what all this crappie as about, oh it's a bad battery, you know they do go bad they said. Well thank god I purchased extended warranty they fixed an axle, clock spring replaced buttons on steering wheel, I had to buy a new battery and still the problem persisted. Recently after this whole ordeal I started with the dealer in August and didn't get my car fixed and back to me until almost christmas! got my car back tail light still doesn't work, cruise is somewhat fixed radio did it again and guess what, the headlight burned out again a week after I picked up the car!!! arrrggghhhh! I went and bought a new set of headlights (because they always tell you to replace in pairs) and guess what even the brand new bulb doesn't work!!! I spent almost 30K on this car and my 18K corolla was way better! functioning.
Steering coupling (rubber) faulty, worn, causing knocking in steering. ESC (electronic steering control, caused left front wheel to lock up while driving, both causing a safety hazard.
Clunking sound began to come from the steering wheel at low speeds which just kept getting worse. After about a month the steering became loose and it feels like something is grinding inside the column. Took it to the dealership and they said it would be $120 just to diagnose the problem. A simple google search turned up the problem is extremely common with Sonatas and is this little three dollar plastic wheel that apparently grinds up and falls apart. The dealership still wanted $120 to diagnose was was wrong despite me telling them and then wanted $360 to fix the problem. The car has only 49,000 miles on it but is four months outside warranty. The dealership did agree to sell me the three dollar plastic wheel thing but when I asked if they made one out of metal or something that won't break they apparently do not. I guess I can have a shop put the new wheel in but I will just have to keep replacing it since its the same cheap plastic and will be ground up by normal use and leave me with an unsafe, clunking and loose steering wheel.
When the steering wheel is turned either left or right there is a loud clicking noise regardless of when the car is stopped or driving. This is a common issue from everything I've read from people and even the dealership knew exactly what it was. This should be a recall due to safety reasons. If this part goes out there is a chance someone could lose control of their vehicle.
The steering clicks when I back the car up and turn the wheel in either direction. This is how the problem started. Now, over a two-month period, it makes the same sound when moving forward slowly and turning the wheel in either direction.

The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 60 mph, the steering wheel vibrated violently and the steering wheel seized. The contact also stated that the steering became difficult to control and caused the vehicle to swerve out of the lane. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the steering column intermediate shaft universal joint needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 45,200.
I lost power steering when I was pulling into highway traffic from a gas station and almost hit cars in the parallel lanes because I couldn't turn quickly enough. The warning light illuminated just prior to losing power steering.
Started car on morning of 12/15 2016, eps light came on and stayed on. Electronic power steering not working at all, even after car was completely warmed up.. could not even steer enough to back the car out of the driveway. Could not even get to road to try to drive down street. Had car 4 years 11 months, 59600 miles. Trying to drive without eps is extremely dangerous.
About 2 months ago I started to have a loud clunking sounds while I was driving at a high rate of speed on the highway. It sounded like a knocking and it is actually pretty loud. It affects the steering of the car and shakes the steering wheel to the point it is not comfortable to drive over 50 mph. In California, if I drive 50 on the highway I am going to get rammed off the road. I did a quick google search and come to find out I am not the only one with this issue. This issue needs to be recalled by Hyundai so that everyone can drive their cars safely. I feel that I am in danger driving my car and have recently had to consider renting a car just to travel for the holidays. I am too afraid of breaking down in the middle of no where or in the dark. I learned that the part that is needed is a steering flex coupler that is only a 4$ part (part #apdty 112837) and yet the dealer or any shop wants 400$ which is so ridiculous! this is a serious safety issue and needs to be addressed. Less serious but still an issue is the lighting assemblies in the car. Both the front headlight assemblies and the back taillight assemblies are so properly made that the plastic has literally melted the housing assembly for the bulb and they get stuck inside. I had to explain this to an officer who was not very amused and then ended up paying a shop 40$ to get it out which they did. Thankfully they did because when they got it out you can see where it is melted and how it was stuck. That is not ok! I need to be able to change the bulb when it goes out. Not to mention the huge risk of a fire by having a hot light bulb by a bunch of melting plastic. I mean really Hyundai, my car hits its warranty expiration and all of a sudden you are trying to kill me!
The coupling has worn down resulting in a horrible clunking sound and feel when driving. I am scared my steering column will fall apart every time I go over a bump....that or my wheels will fall off. $400 bucks to fix. I've read it's happening to yhsibmake and model and tear all over the place...why did Hyundai use plastic couplings? Hyundai... you need to recall this.
While driving my vehicle at any speed, the steering wheel makes a loud grinding noise when turned to the left or right. The sound is the loudest when turning the wheel to make a right turn or when reversing to park. When turning the steering wheel, it sounds as if the steering wheel is grinding against a part. This noise has began in the last month.
At 61080 miles, the steering wheel was making a knocking sound while turning right or left with excessive play in the steering affecting steering control. The event was sudden and there was no prior indication of a problem. Hyundai dealership replaced the flexible coupling (pn 56315-2K000-fff) to correct the issue caused by the coupler they described as "worn out". replacement of the coupler is not identified by Hyundai as a scheduled maintenance item. Total replacement cost was $321.39
The steering column has become very loosened. When driving at a high rate of speed, the steering column will pop and jerk in the opposite direction, and sometimes cause my car to steer in the opposite direction. I have learned that the manufacturing could have been either improperly assembled or insufficiently tightened on certain vehicles. This manufacturing defect could suddenly cause me to lose the ability to steer my vehicle, possibly resulting in an automobile accident with a potential for property damage, injury and death. Hyundai (homer skelton, olive branch, ms) is refusing to repair the steering column. I have been told that I will have to pay $305. I just purchased this vehicle from their dealership in Feb. 2016. The driver's side brake light housing unit has a defect, which caused it to melt and the blow the bulb. The bulb is hard to remove because the plastic assembly has melted to the bulb. I have been told by a certified mechanic that this is very dangerous and can even cause a fire. I have been told by Hyundai (homer skelton, olive branch, ms), that they will have to replace the entire light fixture, just to replace this blown bulb. The cost will be $253. If Hyundai has had some of the same known problems with the 2011 Sonata, someone should hold them accountable to recall the 2012 Sonata and take a look at the same issues, before these defects cause someone and/or their family their lives.
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 60 mph, the steering coupling below the dashboard felt loose. The failure was noticed after the vehicle was repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 15V568000 (engine). The dealer diagnosed that the failure was due to normal wear and tear, and was no fault of the dealer. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 87,000.
When turning the steering wheel to the right or left either moving or sitting still there is a loud clicking noise coming from the steering system. After some research I found that the $3 steering coupler is failing which will lead to the total loss of power steering assist. This started at 82,000 miles. I contacted the dealer and was told that it would cost $276 to replace the part. Because this part is made of rubber and has a high failure rate I do not know why a safety recall has not been issued. The loss of steering control is definitely a safety issue and should not be something that the dealerships can use to exploit the consumer.
I own Sonata 2012 gls with current mileage approx. 41000. I get some noise every time I turn the car left or right. When I inquired to the dealer to get it fixed, they said it was a coupling on the steering column and which seems to be common with Sonatas manufactured between 2011-13. I have to pay few hundreds to get this fixed before winter approaches else it will get worse. If this is common in Sonatas, why Hyundai hasn't recalled them yet. I do not think any other car, which is under 45000 miles experiencing this kind of problem. I am very much upset with Hyundai.
When I start driving over 60 mph, the steering wheel and column starts shaking violently, as well as when I apply the brakes or go over rough/patchy road. It feels as though the steering will fall off. Car only has 82,000 miles on it. When I took it to the dealer to get it fixed, they said it was a coupling on the steering column, and they told me it was a wear and tear item. That is ridiculous, because I have had several vehicles over years, some with over 200,000 miles on them and have never experienced this. I had to bite the bullet and pay the price to get it fixed because of how dangerous it felt driving, as if at any moment I could have lost control, causing an accident. The dealer told me this is a common problem with the Sonatas, but yet Hyundai hasn't recalled them, but did go on to replace them in the newer models, as if leaving owners of the pre-2013 styles to their own devices. Not to mention, countless other problems we have had with the this particular Sonata, such as the starer going out with less than 20,000 miles on it, the constant locking of the steering wheel (to which I am afraid it will do while driving), and the radio going out with less than 30,000 miles on it. I have never been so disappointed with a company in my life.
