On August 12th 2021, I was driving the engine started making a knocking/tapping sound. As I accelerated it sounded like something broke off, bounced around then shot out the bottom of my vehicle. My vehicle then started to smoke and leak oil all over the road. I pulled over and turned the engine off. We found the part that flew out of the engine, it was the connector rod. It had snapped off into two pieces and shot through the oil pan after passing through the engine causing irreparable damage. There were no warning signs, no check engine or oil lights, nothing. This happened out of the blue. Our safety as well as the safety of others were put at risk not only when the part flew out of the car and could have hit another vehicle, but it almost caught fire and it could have caused an accident had we nowhere to pull off the road, as traffic was heavy that day. This vehicle has been at the Hyundai dealership since August 13th 2021. It has been inspected and determined it in deed needs a new engine, the cause was connector rod failure.

I was driving on the highway with my 3 children (I am 9 months pregnant) when we heard a loud pop from the engine, the car gave a sudden jolt and then a loud ticking sound started. The car had a hard time accelerating as I tried to pull over to a safe location. I felt my life and my family's life was in danger. The car was taken first to a mechanic where I was informed that they had several cases with the same issue from the same vehicles recently and recommended us tow it immediately to a Hyundai dealership as it was a recall issue and it was not safe to drive. We towed it to a Hyundai dealership and they informed us that it was a rod barring failure. They informed us that there was indeed an open recall for this particular issue however it was on the Santa fe 2.4 liter models and not our 3.3 liter model. They did tell us that they tried to contact Hyundai consumer affairs since it is the same issue but that Hyundai refused to extend the recall to us. I called consumer affairs directly after and explained my concerns and situation and was told there was nothing they could do about it since there was no recall on my 3.3 liter vehicle. I was given an estimate of $9-10K as a quote to fix the issue. There were no warning lights, no prior symptoms to the failure, this simply happened unexpectedly and put my family at risk.

My car engine caught fire on 04/18/2021 and totaled my car. I just received a recall notice from Hyundai for this issue via the USPS yesterday 06/29/2021. I had only 60,000 miles and expected to own this car another 3-5 years. I am out a new car payment and this could have burned my condo down as I was 2 blocks away from it driving home and routinely park in my garage.

Additionally, the blue link screen failed to load and link the features. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed two catalytic converters that needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 115,000.

I was getting on the expressway and everything just seemed like it was on safety mode. My car gurgled, it wouldn't switch gears, the engine light kept flashing. I thought it was a transmission issue until I got it to a Firestone. They said the cylinder is missing on 2,4,6. And that there was a timing chain issue. The dealership says it sounds more like coils.... I'm experiencing all the same issues I'm reading about here. No warning, smelling something burning although no fire. The rpm kept going up at I'm giving gas but not the speed. It has 80,000. Why are only the sports models covered when there are so many cases of other models?

Engine light came on, engine started to make a rattling sound. The sound got worse when accelerating especially if I was attempting to go up a hill.I tried to make it to a mechanic, but the engine died on the way while attempting to make it up a big hill and would not restart. I had it towed to a shop, they said there was no oil in the car despite the fact that we always had our oil changed regularly. There was no sign of a leak. They had to put three quarts in it just for anything to show on the dipstick. The shop that I took it to did not do engine repair and recommended that I had it taken some place to have the engine rebuilt. Their theory was is that something blew and that the oil was being burned up. It happened so fast. One day I had a dependable care that I loved. The next it needed it's engine replaced. However, I knew I could not afford to pay for an engine to be rebuilt or replaced. So, I had to just have my car towed home.

Mechanic shop customer presents with complaint of oil leak and no serpentine belt. Iinitial diagnosis. Camshaft seal and serpentine belt upon opening up found extensive damage to timing and heads. Damage to camshaft, rocker arms appear to be burnt from no lubricant. Appears to be blunt force trauma that caused broken parts. Unless we open up the engine there is no way to determine the extent of damage to the internal engine parts. The recalls demonstrate over 129,000 engines recalled for Hyundai and this appears to be caused by engine defects. Car was stationary and would not start, towed to dealer and dealer explained engine was blown. I searched google for recalls and many Hyundai Santa Fe's between 2013-2019 had recalls, although they were sports model and ours is not a sports model, we believe that there would be other Santa Fe non-sports model with same issue. Hyundai informed us that it would cost $18000 for a new engine, they would cover half the cost, we purchased the car for around $21000 - this is ridiculous and taking advantage of consumers. I am waiting for paper work from Hyundai with report but there is no way I can pay $9000 to get a new engine. Any assistance on this gauging and possible issue that others have encountered would be appreciated. I do not think they are being honest. We also brought the car in prior to 100000 mile warranty expired with 'check engine' light on, they diagnose some small maintenance has to be performed and we payed for that, we drove it home and a few days later 'check engine' light re-appeared, brought it back and they said nothing was wrong. Attached are invoices for above repairs

Our vehicle has never had any issues, no check engine light, nothing. We were driving on the highway at approximately 60mph when there began to have a knocking, rattling noise from the engine. We pulled over to check it, no check engine light or anything still. Drove the vehicle to our repair shop, and on the way there, our engine blew. Still no check engine light came on. Our vehicle only had 133,000 miles on it, so of course it's out of warranty. Such a huge burden. We are now stuck having to replace the engine, while owing a crap ton of money on this SUV.

After getting gas, I noticed a strange sound coming from my car. I dropped it off with my mechanic who recognized this as a Hyundai gdi engine having defects. I had the car towed to a Hyundai dealership that confirmed the bearings were worn and engine rod was almost through the engine. Hyundai has refused to cover expense to repair.

2015 Hyundai sant fe limited 3.3L AWD, purchased new from dealership, 129,280 miles. Routine oil service with mobil 1 synthetic and Wix filters since purchased. Traveling 75mph on I-10 (Florida) with cruise control on. Not towing, traveling straight. As the vehicle started up a small grade in the road, the cruise control surged (as normal to maintain vehicle speed) I heard a bang, check engine light came on, oil light came on, engine died immediately. I immediately shifted into neutral and looked out the passenger window to merge onto the shoulder and noticed an orange glow outside (it was night). Once stopped, opened hood and noticed smell of oil, oil pooled in the underbody fairing. Checked oil drain plug and filter, as I had an oil change 700 miles prior. Both were still properly installed. Towed to local mechanic, diagnosis was seized engine. Inspected engine block and noticed fist sized hole in block (see photos). Towed to dealership, was informed they hadn't seen this before on this engine. I informed them I currently drive a 2001 Hyundai elantra with 220K miles on it and have been driving/maintaining cars for 30 years and I've never seen this before either. Was informed that they suspect improper oil maintenance. Oil and filter both replaced every 5000 miles. Always mobile 1 synthetic and Wix (good quality filters/oil). I suspect Hyundai has engine reliability issues. No prior engine issues noticed. No check engine lights prior. No oil lights on prior. We just completed a trip to nashville, tn (860 miles round trip) and were returning from jasper, fl (460 miles round trip). Oil and filter replaced right before trip. Tires balanced and rotated. In other words, I maintain my car.

  • 73,000 miles
My 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe has been recalled due to the anti-lock system (ABS) modules that could leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrica short over time. The piston seals in the ABS modules's hydraulic valve could leak brake fluid into the electronic control unit (euc). An electrical short in the ABS module could increase the risk of an engine compartment fire. The safety recall letter I received 12-24-20 stated to call the nearest Hyundai dealer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment to have this repaired. I called on Jan 12, 2021 to my dealership and was told the parts to fix the recall were not in yet and they could not tell me when they would be available. I find this to be very concerning that I may have a car that anytime could catch on fire and Hyundai cannot fix it.

I have already replaced the map sensor and the battery last year. Car was shutting off while driving with no warning. Check engine light would stay on. Recently in last couple months noticed issues with the brakes. When applying pressure to brakes while on freeway the steering would shake and feel like I had no control. Just received notice of a brake recall but there is still no remedy. How long do I wait for them to come up with a remedy?

The contact stated that while driving the vehicle started to smoke from the exhaust pipe. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and was diagnosed that the engine was burning oil and needed to be changed. The oil was changed in hopes it would repair the failure. The vehicle was then towed to herb connolly Hyundai, 520 worcester rd, framingham, MA 01702, and was diagnosed that the engine oil level was perfect on arrival and was not replicating the failure of the smoke. The failure recurred. The vehicle was then towed to mirak Hyundai, 1165 Massachusetts ave, arlington, MA 02476, where it was diagnosed that too much oil was added. The dealer informed the contact was to pick up the vehicle. The dealer informed the contact that there was no remedy available for the open recall of NHTSA campaign number: 20V520000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided a case number. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000. Part distribution disconnected. - (recall related incident)
