CarComplaints.com Notes: We're not used to seeing any major problems with Hyundai, which makes the early signs of trouble with the 2013 Elantra very surprising, in a bad way.

Early trends show problems with the steering wandering / pulling to one side along with premature tire wear. Elantra owners have tried sensor adjustments, wheel alignments, even replacing axles, most with no luck. Hyundai has made vehicle buybacks through arbitration, but that rarely works out well financially for owners in the end.

Also there is a pattern of complaints about the 2013 Elantra brakes grinding at very low mileage. It seems there was a bad batch of OEM pads & rotors, but so far Hyundai is not doing a recall. Instead Hyundai issued a TSB & dealers have been replacing pads & rotors on a per-complaint basis.

The final straw is that for several years in a row, Elantra owners report significantly lower gas mileage than the EPA estimates, & there's a small trend of engine problems.

The light had been on for a while now, it goes off once I start the engine but once I start to drive is when it comes on. I took it to the dealership and they're going to look at it tomorrow to see what the issue is. The airbag light indicates off and when my brother sat in the passenger seat the airbag light went away and showed nothing but the notification on the dashboard still showed on.

The airbag light came on and stayed on - took to dealer to find out why - told the air bag control module needed replaced (code B1620) at a whopping cost of $1400! plus the $110 it cost me to have it diagnosed. I have a warranty however this safety issue is not covered and I find that very upsetting as there are many complaints on air bags not going off because of this unit! the car is 5 years old and has less than 100,000 miles on it. This should not go bad and if it does Hyundai should take care of it as it is a safety issue! how many people have to be seriously injured or worse die before Hyundai gets involved? its a safety issue that should be covered - obviously profits out weigh safety with them.

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. While idling at a stop light, the contact's vehicle was rear ended by another vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. As a result, the contact rear ended the preceding vehicle. None of the air bags deployed and the seat belt failed to restrain the contact. The visor fell down and partially prevented further head injury. A police report was filed. The driver sustained hip bruising, back pain, right leg pain, face abrasions, and wrist pain (mainly the left wrist). Medical attention was required. A police report was filed. The insurance company towed the vehicle to senn's collision repair center. The vehicle was not diagnosed by an independent mechanic or a dealer concerning the air bag and seat belt failure. Within a week, the manufacturer was notified of the crash and stated that an investigation could take up to six weeks or longer. The contact was waiting on a response. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 13V115000 (air bags and structure). The approximate failure mileage was 83,000.

At less than 5 years of use the "clock-spring" located in the steering column became "defective" causing the SRS idiot light to illuminate and indicating the entire SRS system is shutdown. This vehicle is less than 5 years of age with a defective critical safety component failure that Hyundai refuses to cover for any reason other than force by government Agency. This component is not external but rather well protected and not susceptible to fluids, or external forces other than its normal operation of simply turning with the steering wheel. This component connects the steering wheel airbag to the SRS system however instead of simply disabling the steering wheel airbag, it's failure disables all the airbags as well as any other safety device connected to the SRS system. Through no fault of the owner or the operator of the vehicle, the SRS system can shutdown while driving with no audible indication other than a small idiot light on the dash which can easily be unnoticed. If a crash situation occurs, the operator of the vehicle can be seriously injured or killed due to no airbag deployment. I contend this part in this vehicle has been poorly designed and manufactured and becomes defective long before the vehicle has been removed from service. This part, at the very least, should be paid for by Hyundai. Furthermore a study of existing clock-springs used by this manufacturer should be studied as this is not a first for this part and this manufacturer. Attachment doc shows repair, part number, and cost of repair. Furthermore, this item should not be a mileage warranty part...the life of this part is based on how many times the steering wheel is turned, not how many miles the car is driven..a city car will have much more turns than a highway vehicle.

At 62,000 miles my air bag light began intermittently flashing and now remains illuminated. The dealership wants to charge me a few hundred dollars to diagnose the problem and says that my airbags will fail unless fixed. The airbags are not covered under warranty and I am reading hundreds of stories online just like my experience. Hyundai should recall this issue and keep drivers safe! I would never recommend a car with airbags failing after less than 5 years! I do not feel safe driving this vehicle.

I have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra 4dr gls with 86,000 miles on it. Red airbag warning light will not turn off. Took it to local Hyundai dealer in lansing, mi. Told me it would cost $122 just to read the fault code with their equipment. They told me it was fault code B138200. They said it was the airbag front seat passenger back assembly. Part number 884003X631pbs. They told me it was not covered under warranty because I am over 60,000 miles. When I looked up the fault code it stated side airbag front passenger resistance too high. They want $1,321 to fix it. Searching on line revealed many complaints on the Hyundai Elantra airbag system. I believe this should be a safety recall. Thanks

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. When the vehicle was started, the air bag warning indicator illuminated intermittently without warning. The indicator currently remains illuminated. The local dealer (rick case Hyundai duluth, 3180 satellite blvd nw, duluth, ga, 30096, 855-254-5290) advised the contact to schedule an appointment for diagnostic testing. The appointment was not scheduled due to the diagnostic fee. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who tried to reset the air bag sensor and diagnosed that the failure was due to the clock spring. The mechanic stated that they could not guarantee that it was the cause of the failure and that it needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that there was no recall on the vehicle. Due to the vehicle being outside of the 60,000 mile warranty, the contact would be responsible for the repair costs. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.

On April 14th 2017 my wife was involved in a car accident where she hydroplaned off of an onramp at 60-65mph as she was getting on the highway and rolled her 2013 Hyundai Elantra. The side impact and side curtain airbags never deployed. At the time of the accident she was a month and a half pregnant. I her husband called Hyundai while at the hospital. I let them know that "none" of the airbags deployed and they said that they would start a case. I also let the company know where the car was being sent which was a Hyundai dealership in town and asked if they would check the airbags which "never happened". the car was repaired and we picked up the car on May 4th 2017. We have been in constant contact with Hyundai about the airbag situation and we feel that they never really took it seriously. My wife's car has been sitting in our driveway since May 4th, 2017 not being driven due to (a) my wife being afraid of the car and not feeling safe inside. (B) not knowing about the airbags and the "ongoing investigation". fast forward to today September 20th, 2017 I received an email from Hyundai saying that due to them not being able to check the car and airbags out "post-accident they were unable to find any faults in the airbags, and then they go no to say that the Elantra's side curtain airbags are not supposed to deploy in a rollover accident. My wife was traveling at between 60 and 65 mph when she lost control of her Elantra and I can not understand why they (a) did not check the airbags when the car was at a certified dealer/repair shop and (B) why they are telling us that the side curtain airbags were not supposed to deploy in a rollover. From the research that I have done in any rollover the side impact and side curtain airbags are supposed to deploy in a rollover. I do have picture and emails fro the accident and emails from Hyundai.

The airbag warning light came on on my dashboard a few days ago and has been on ever since. I have read on several online forums how several other people have been having the same issue and how this means that the airbag will not deploy during a collision. This is a serious safety issue and the dealerships should be charging over $250 to correct this defect. I have not yet been in an accident, but I don't want to wait until then for someone to take action. Thank you.

"takata recall" my husband, daughter, and I were in an accident with a driver of a mini van who blew a stop sign on a city street. The driver of the van was ticketed. The van's airbags went off as the photo shows. Our 2013 Elantra air bags did not as the photos show. I was in the front passenger seat. All of us had seatbealts on but I suffered blunt chest trauma and a concussion. The vehicle airbag book says their is a sensor in the front center of the car that detects 30 degrees either way. Look at the photos - failed to detect and deploy in our case.

On April 14th 2017 I got into a car accident where I ended up on my drivers side in a ditch and my side impact airbags never deployed. We have been in constant contact with Hyundai since than with no resolution. We have before the car got fixed and after the car got fixed pictures of the airbags and you can clearly see where someone had tampered with them. My car has been sitting in our driveway since May 4th not being driven because we don't feel safe driving it not knowing if the airbags are going to work if we need them too and we were told to not use it by Hyundai until someone from Hyundai could come and inspect the car, which they never did. I also have all the phone calls we have ever made to Hyundai written down including times, dates, who we talked to and what we talked about, all the emails sent back and forth with Hyundai we also have printed. It has gotten to a pint now that we actually got the BBB and the North Carolina state attorney general involved. I have included the pictures my husband took of the drivers side and passenger side airbags.
