My car completely shuts off at stop sign/red light when engine idle feature is activated. I have to put car in park and restart it. This has been an ongoing issue since summer 2021. Vehicle was evaluated at dealership with no resolve. In addition, a new cam shaft had to be installed in fall 2022, at Honda's expense.Car completely stalled while passing another (55mph)
Had the no restart after auto start/stop of my engine occur. While I was attempting to make left turn at a light, vehicle remained off and completely shut down. All the lights on dashboard came on and had to place in park. Fortunately after two attempts, vehicle restarted. Turned feature off vehicle. Took to Honda Dealership today. Service Rep. had no idea that there is a current investigation into this matter. Gave me no assure that this issue would be resolved or repaired. Also told me I-??d have to authorize a $155 diagnostic fee just to have it looked at, since there is currently not an official recall.
Car stalled at a busy intersection and was unable to be restarted. The auto-idle restart was on as this is the default when the car is started and it engaged while I was at a stoplight (had driven approximately 1 mile prior to stopping at stop light) when light turned green, I pressed the gas peddle but the car did not restart instead it stalled. I was unable to get the car restarted. The car was in the road at a busy intersection, ultimately the police had to respond to keep traffic moving and the car was towed. Please note that during my attempts to restart the car by engaging the brake and pushing the ignition (what dash tells you to do) my hazard lights would go off - leaving me very vulnerable. This is an incredibly scary situation to be in. I usually turn off the auto restart when I get in the car because the car has previously stalled, but in the previous situations I have been able to get it restarted. Unfortunately, I forgot to turn it off on my morning commute today. This is a HUGE safety hazard and needs to be addressed. I have made a formal complaint to Honda and my car is currently at a Honda dealership being evaluated.
This vehicle is equipped with an Auto Stop/Start feature when the vehicle is in idle and the brake is depressed. Once the brake is depressed the engine will shut off and then it should re-start as soon as the brake is released. This feature is malfunctioning on my vehicle. When the brake is released and the engine is restarted the electrical system on the car occasionally shuts down momentarily. This includes the HVAC, Stereo, Meter, Lights. On 3 separate occasions the car has stalled. The vehicle is then needed to be put in park and restarted. This has happened at traffic lights and could cause an accident if the reaction time to restart the vehicle is not quick enough. I had the dealer review the problem during an oil change but they only checked the battery level and determined it was not an issue. This issue seemed to appear around 35-40k miles on the odometer. The vehicle now has 56k miles on it. The issue does not occur 100% of the time, but occurs over 50% of the time.

The auto start-stop feature is malfunctioning and has been malfunctioning since I purchased the car. When the start/stop initiates at a stop, the car turns off and then when the car turns back on, the entire car completely shuts off and then turns back on, resetting everything. That is how it begins and then after a week or two more, the car completely shuts off and then will not restart. The problem is getting worse and worse as the years go on. It is extremely dangerous to be stuck in the middle of an intersection and my car is stalled out and has no way of turning back on. I have taken the car to the dealership maybe 8 times for this problem since I purchased the car is early 2018. It has gone through 4 batteries in 4 years (even with the pandemic, it should have been more). This issue is somehow draining the batteries extremely fast. There is a huge problem with the auto start/stop and my hope is that Honda buys-back all of these defective cars. I have no clue what kind of damage this has done to my engine, starter, etc. and am worried that I purchased this car as a reliable unit for my family, but it seems extremely unsafe and unpredictable. I know this is already under investigation but I wanted to include my plea and maybe encourage others to do the same. I know there are a ton of other people out there with the same unsafe problem.
In support of NHTSA Action Number: PE22005 2017 Honda Pilot multiple experiences with the auto idle cutting off and not restarting. 8/4/2022 was worst experience to date. The vehicle cut off at a stop light and would not restart. The ability to roll down the windows and unlock the doors was disabled so 2 occupants were potentially trapped inside. Fortunately a door had just been opened to waive backed up traffic around the disabled vehicle. AAA and Sheriff's were called to the scene. It was successfully jumped and the AAA diagnosis was that nothing was wrong with the battery, starter, nor alternator. This is a major flaw in engineering and a fix has to be developed or the vehicle appropriately replaced.
The auto engine idle stop fails to restart the engine after stopping at stop lights, stop signs, in traffic, etc. Even after repeatedly "working" to turn off the car and turn it back on, it can take up to 2 minutes to effectively turn off the car so it may be restarted. This feels extremely dangerous at stoplights, but especially when caught in stop and go traffic on the highway or on a bridge. Cars go around into the intersection, honk, and when traffic picks up from the stop-and-go situation, cars drive by at high rates of speed while I sit motionless in the middle of the highway. While I more often than not remember to turn off this "feature" when starting the car, there are times that I forget. It has been horrible for my newly licensed driver. The anxiety and stress this has caused has led to learned anxiety while riding in and driving other cars that do not have this "feature." The problem was first reported to my local dealer in 2021. Today I asked the dealer to look at it again, while the SUV was undergoing a fix for the hood recall, and I was informed it would be a $140 diagnostic fee and then whatever the cost would be to "fix" observed problems. The dealer has not documented my complaints about said problem, though they ran diagnostics and indicated that the starter and battery were operating according to spec. They "reset" the system in November, but it did not help with the problem quickly reappearing.
While stopped at stop sign, vehicle's engine auto stop feature engaged and shutoff engine. When driver went to apply the accelerator to move past stop sign, vehicle totally shutdown. The dash instructed driver to depress brake and start engine, which was unsuccessful. Driver had to open and close door to totally shut vehicle down to get engine to turn on again.
Per PE 22-005, with Auto Idle Stop enabled, when coming to a stop light, I stopped. When the light turned green, and I let my foot off the brake, the engine would not restart, as if the battery were dead. I put the car in Park, turned it off, turned it back on, and was able to restart the engine. This happened in about March of 2021. Since that time I always disable Auto Idle Stop, as it may create an unsafe traffic condition or accident if this were to happen in traffic. I was going to replace the battery, but have not done so since the occurrence 16 mos. ago, and have had no other issues with the battery in that time.
Starting in the summer if 2020 every few weeks after coming to a stop and the auto idle stop would stop the engine. When releasing the brake the engine would not immediately restart. The pause on restart would slowly increase as the time between occurrences decreased. Occurred during each trip. Pauses increased enough that the entire control panel and radio screen would go black, and then the car restarted with warning message coming up on control panel. Contacted Honda and took it in on 9/9/2020. They couldn-??t recreate the issue. They charged the battery, did hard reset. Drove car with issue still occurring. Returned the vehicle for additional service on 9/16/2020. They are still unable to duplicate the issue and opened up a tech line case#4376911. They replaced a Dc/DC converter. Issue continued. Returned car with same issue. Don-??t know date at this time. They replaced the battery which did fix the problem, temporarily. Began having same issue April 2022. Issue slowly increasing in duration of pause and frequency of occurring. July 10 2022 started having pause long enough for control panels to go dark and get warning light when engine restarted. Started occurring daily. On Friday 7/29/22 came to a four way stop and idle stop engaged. Lifted foot off brake, pushed on gas and realized car had not restarted and car was rolling backwards. Quickly pushed on brake to to stop car rolling backwards which then car restarted with warning light. Called Honda on 7/29/22 made appointment for 8/4/22. On Sunday 7/31/22 We were driving and came to a stop and idle off engaged turning off engine at a red light. At this occurrence the dash and radio went black when foot was pulled off break. Engine did not restart. Dash lights came back on with message that car must be in park to start engine. Attempted to switch to park but controls would not until few attempts. Finally Able to put in park, start car, put in drive and pull away. Stuck in traffic lane for about 15-25 seconds. Scary.
I was stopped at a red light. The stop idol engaged and the vehicle did not start when I attempted to make my turn. The instrument panel indicated that I should shift to park. I did so and attempted to restart the vehicle but it did not start. After a number of attempts to restart it eventually turned on and I drove straight home. I was in the middle of a major intersection with my son in the car. Car zooming by me as my car was stuck in the turning lane. If a car failing to start as a result of a feature that was integrated by the manufacturer isn-??t a safety issue then I don-??t know what a safety concern would be classified as according the this institution. Permanently shutting off the feature is not an option as it renegades every time you start the car initially. The car has stalled a few times prior to today-??s incident but this is the first time it failed to restart. As I drove home I reengaged the system to see what would happen, if failed to restart again and began the stall every time once the idol stop was engaged. This is unsafe. If I forget to turn off the function of this feature and I am on an expressway what happens if the car fails to restart, my brakes lights may not be pressed as I am thinking I am simply going to drive off and I could get rear ended at 60 miles an hour. This is a safety issue. This is a ticketing time bomb and further delays are putting thousands of lives at risk. I did I not know about the problem until I research the internet to find a solution. Why haven-??t we been informed of this problem" Is this institution waiting for the body count to be high enough to warrant a consumer alert" This is a safety issue.
Every since about 1.5 years into owning my car, the auto idle engine shutoff will stall my car. After multiple trips to the dealer who said nothing was wrong, this issue persisted until I had my battery replaced at about year 3. It started working again as it should until about another 1-1.5 years into the new battery, and it stalls all of the time especially when the car has been driven for about 15-20 minutes. I understand the NHTSA is already looking into this issue, but the manufacturer needs to disable this feature until a fix can be made. Many times, I have blocked traffic at a stop because of this and trying to get my car restarted.
When stopping for more than a few seconds auto-idle stop turns off the vehicle completely and does not turn back on by pressing the gas pedal. Car must then be completely turned off, back on and shifted into drive to continue moving.
For several year I've had a problem with the fuel-saving stop-start system on my Honda Pilot. Unless I turn this system off each time I drive it routinely (several times a week) fails to turn back on after making a complete stop, usually at a traffic light or stop sign. This has placed me in several dangerous situations as cars are speeding behind me, not expecting my car to be at a dead stop when a green light turns. It takes several tries to re-start the car and causes chaos at intersections. I took the car to a Honda dealer and was charged $975 to replace the battery, which they said would fix the problem. I have also followed all the safety recalls and yet the problem persists. I wanted to file an official report because this faulty system is a major accident waiting to happen. Given that my car fails to re-start once or twice per week, it's only a matter of time before I'm hit from behind while I'm stalled at an intersection. Honda has made it so that I am unable to permanently disable this feature and has yet to provide a repair so that it doesn't occur. Meanwhile, I've spent almost $1k trying to fix the problem myself without success. If the fuel-saving start-stop system is going to be a required feature please hold Honda accountable for providing a system that keeps their drivers safe and will not be the cause of an accident bringing harm to my family or others.
Auto stop start failed to restart the engine while in heavy traffic on an interstate. We had to put the car in park, turn on the hazards, turn the car off completely and restart it twice before engine would crank up completely. No warning lamps lit up prior to the car stalling out. We just had our emissions inspection and there were no error codes reported on the ODB scan. We took this to Honda in 2021 and they replaced the car battery but gave us no indication that the start stop feature was malfunctioning. Happy to have Honda or anyone else inspect the car.
I was at a stop light on a very busy roadway and when I let off the brake to start going, my engine wouldn-??t start and completely shut down. I was using the engine idle option. I couldn-??t do anything- my car just stalled. Some lights came on the dashboard. I tried to step on the brake to either change gears or shut the car off but it was like I pushing against a brick! The brake wouldn-??t move. Eventually I was able to shut the car off completely. After a few minutes, I was able to turn the car on but it didn-??t fully turn the engine on. After a few more minutes, I was able to turn the car like normal. I took my car to the Honda dealership near me but they couldn-??t find any problems and said they hadn-??t heard of this problem. I recommended that they Google it because I had seen a lot of complaints. I-??m now nervous to drive my car!!
The auto idle stop function caused the vehicle to stop running, needing a full shutdown and restart. This happened on busy roadways, and it has happened two times with this vehicle, one time each in different years. I think the first time was in 2021 and the second was definitely in June 2022. We have had this vehicle into a dealership multiple times attempting to resolve the issue. Each time the battery has been replaced due to low voltage, and they were able to reproduce the issue at least once. The most recent time I was informed that Honda released a service bulletin recommending a change to engine compression that may be straining the battery when restarting the engine, but I am currently waiting on Honda to decide if they will cover the cost of this service before agreeing to it. We are currently operating the vehicle with the auto idle stop disabled. Other symptoms included the electrical system blinking off and on when restarting the engine after a stop. This was reproduceable after 3-4 consecutive stops in a short period of time, such as urban driving with traffic lights. This first appeared 3-6 months after a new battery is installed.
