CarComplaints.com Notes: It's rare when a newer vehicle has defect trends, & the 2017 Honda CR-V has at least two — overfilled oil levels with a gas smell, & heat not working.

Both problems affecting the Honda CR-V's 1.5L "Earth Dreams" engine appear to be related to cold-climate regions.

CR-V owners report overfilled oil levels due to fuel in the oil, & sometimes a gas smell in the cabin. That problem appears to be related to fuel injection which Honda hopes to fix via a software update. Honda so far has only conducted a recall in China & a "product update" in Canada.

CR-V owners also report no heat even after warming up their CR-Vs for 30 minutes — not even enough to defrost the windshield. So far, there has been no fix from Honda for this issue.

The button on the gear shifter cracked when pressure was applied by my thumb when trying to shift from park to drive causing the vehicle to not be able to shift in and out of gear. Fortunately the car was in park at the time instead of drive or reverse. After the gear shift button cracked the key would no longer release from the ignition.

I was going to pull into a parking spot at a store and tube parking gear would not move into park. I was pushing the button in to move from drive to park and it would not move. Then the button just popped out. I was stuck as I scrambled to find the broken button. Luckily when I found it I could put it in to move it to park even though it was broke. My car is a year old and when I looked online tons of people had the same thing happen to them. Issue is in their cases their button completely broke and they could not move the gear shiftier. They had to use pliers. It is a cheap plastic button Honda is using. This is a safety hazard and needs to be recalled.next time I may not be so lucky. Honda did replace the button and I have the documents from this.

During normal shifting of the automatic transmission lever, the push button release on the shifting knob broke in two. The unit was under slight spring tension and popped out after splitting in two. The car was stuck in drive and I was unable to control the transmission. This happened while the vehicle was parked. Upon a quick internet search and after discussions with a factor maintenance representative, it appears this has been a common problem.

When pulling into a driveway at a friends house, I could not shift the car into park. I finally got it into neutral and worrying that I might have to have it towed, I put the car in reverse and had intentions of parking it in the street. When I got it into reverse, the shift button broke off and spring fell on the ground. Ended up getting it to the Honda dealer on 01/07/2019 who apparently has seen a lot of these. Car had around 13,500 miles on it at the time of the incident.

I check engine oil yesterday and found level very high on dipstick and smelling strongly of gasoline. I called the Honda dealer checkered flag where I purchased the vehicle and took it directly there.it had only been 180 miles driven since last oil change at dealer. They offered to change oil again and then told me to keep checking oil level and return to dealer in 1000 miles. I was told the oil level was half quart over filled and was because gas was not being burned during combustion because engine was not hot enough. They said it was normal and not to worry. I don't think the oil will protect my engine when it is so diluted with gasoline.I filed a complaint and got a case number [xxx] from Honda America, but want the problem to be fixed before there is long term damage to my engine. 1.5 turbo engine has gasoline mixing with oil (oil dilution) I have 3000 miles since oil change and is about 3/4 quart over full mark, oil has extreme smell of gasoline. Honda is aware of this problem but seems to be doing nothing to help owners in what they call "warmer climate states". this should be veiwed as an emissions problem at some pont by the NHTSA. I have been to dealer twice for verification of problem, they cannot do anything until Honda corporate authorizes the fix which is being done in cold climate areas.

The shifter knob, Honda part no. Honda 54132tlaa62zb, fell off during use. This locks the transmission in whatever gear was last used - a potentially dangerous situation. The heritage Honda service advisor tells me that Honda is experiencing a lot of these failures.

Dec 18, 2018, dear sirs, I bought this car new on Oct 13, 2017. In December 2017 I took it to the dealer because it took a very long time for the engine to warm up, if I turned the heater on the temp gauge would go to completely cold. The dealer told me this was normal. I just found out today that these cars have an engine problem with gasoline getting into the oil and diluting it. I checked the oil and it was 1/4" above the full mark. The oil was changed in January of 2018 at 4200 miles, it now has 7200 miles on it. I will now take it in to the dealer to have the oil changed again. These two problems, as I understand it are related in that a cold engine will allow more fuel past the piston rings until it warms up. I took the car to the dealer about this problem in Dec 2017 when the car had 700 miles on it. Thank you, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

User interface (ui) for radio operates inconsistently. Began having issues within a few weeks of owning the vehicle. Touchscreen repeatedly freezes, goes black, or the volume is unable to be controlled. Frequently the volume will go all the way to the highest level alone or while you are trying to adjust it up/down. The only solution for all of the radio issues are to roll the windows down so you don't lose your hearing and pull the car over, shut the car off, & restart the car. This is startling when the volume goes all the way up and is a major safety concern. You cannot hear what's going on around you & are in a dangerous predicament in trying to get pulled over somewhere safe to restart your car. I began reporting the issue in September 2017 to my dealership and was told the problem was with apple. Now Honda states that it is a "known issue" but has provided no solution. I have numerous videos of these occurrences for documentation. Additionally, my engine oil smells of gasoline. The dipstick reads high and the Honda dealership has advised me to change the oil every 1,000 miles and to not drive short trips. The engine hesitated once while in traffic. The engine does not heat up at idle and during cold weather you cannot operate your window defroster. This causes safety issues because you can't see out the windows. The only solution is to ride with the windows down when it's cold in order to see. While driving the car down the interstate at approx. 20,000 miles I heard a pop. When I arrived at my destination, I saw that the gear shifter knob popped out. This rendered me unable to shift my car from drive to any other gear. Honda seems to be aware of this issue, as the service tech and advisor both stated that this happens "all the time." Dealership replaced knob. Honda made a defective & dangerous product. They refuse to remedy the problems.

Engine oil was 1 quart overfull. Oil smells like gasoline. Engine oil visibly thinner than normal. Reportedly, this problem is systemic with CR-V's as ours with the turbo 4 cylinder. The gasoline should be evaporating due to engine temp; but, it's not -- as a result the gasoline dilutes the engine oil and causes the oil level to rise.

When I went to put my car into park (car was stationary in a parking spot) the knob was missing and nowhere to be found. I was unable to put the car into park. I had to ask a stranger to look around the floor bed and other possible places so I could exit my vehicle. It randomly pops out (while driving) and I am constantly looking for it. How can I safely drive a car when I might not be able to put the car into park?
