CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2009 Honda Accord has several serious defects – poor brakes, excessive oil consumption, & uncomfortable seats.

BRAKES: There was a class action lawsuit against Honda in 2010 for premature & excessive brake wear. See our page on Honda's brake problems for more info.

OIL CONSUMPTION: Honda issued a TSB about this in late 2011, claiming it could be fixed through a software update to the VCM (variable cylinder management). There are class action lawsuits pending. See our page about the Accord oil consumption.

UNCOMFORTABLE SEATS: Owners have consistently reported uncomfortable seats with the entire 8th generation (2008-2012) of Honda Accords. Complaints range from back pain to leg circulation problems due to bad lumbar support, cushioning, & seat angle. Complaints aren't limited to only a certain body type -- the seat comfort problems are from a wide spectrum of owner height & weight. The common theme we hear is "we never noticed this during the test drive." Unfortunately for unwary buyers, the seat pain is noticeable after 15-20 minutes.

For those with a 2008 or 2009 Honda Accord, there is a problem with the rear brakes. There is a class action lawsuit under which you can file for reimbursement for the costs of parts (excludes labor).

This lawsuit is about the Rear Braking in the 2008-2009 Honda Accords and 2009 Acura TSXs, as well as a small number of the 2010 model year Accords

You can go to the below website to file a claim.

I want to add my name to the list of people with defective brakes on their 2009 Accords. My brakes started squeaking like mad at about 17000 miles. It is unbelievable to me that Honda would not issue a recall, knowing that their rear brake pads are defective. They acknowledge this fact by making a replacement pad different from the original pad. To charge customers any amount of money for their defective product in simply unthinkable on Honda's part and will affect my future auto purchasing decisions. This is a real shame as I have loved my Accord from day one.

The dealer told me the rear brakes were worn out because the Accord is a high performance vehicle and the brake pads in the rear usually wear out between 15 to 20000 miles. I asked why the front pads were not worn out, they told me the vehicle had a special brake system. They wanted $550 to replace the pads and rotors. I told them put the car back together and I will bring it to my own shop. My shop put new pads on and cut the rotors for $250. I feel Honda doesn't really care if the brakes wear out because it on us to pay for. This will probably be the last Honda I buy.

the VSA light went, went to honda, the fixed the system, than honda told me the car needed rear brakes at 24500 miles, they said it would b $256.00 for the repair, I was born at night but not last night!! Honda knew about this issue for a long time and now the ones that own these wonderful cars can pay for Mr. Honda's error! I also own a Honda Element the rear brakes went at 81,000 miles so there is a real problem, Honda should pay for the repair and move on

Leased the Accord because everyone told me it's the most reliable car... I have the car for a year and a half and just rolled over 20,000 miles when i hear this horrible metal grinding sound from my rear driver wheel. What concerned me was that there wasn't any noises before this and it did not only happen when I hit the breaks - it just sounded like I was scraping metal really bad. I took it into the Honda dealer by me and was told that my brakes were completely gone! not worn, not going, but gone as in metal to metal. They said it wasn't covered by warranty and charged me $399 to replace!

I never had this problem, and for a 'new' car to completely lose its brakes under 20K miles is nuts!! There goes what I thought about Honda.

Brakes were squeaking within the first six months but we were told nothing was wrong when taken in for regular warranty-covered checks. Started noticeable shimming when brakes were applied and took in for check at 39,000 miles. Ended up replacing rotors, brakes and rear bearing. The rear bearing alone cost $198. All in all, our bill came to $669. plus change.

We've taken the car in to the dealer for repair of carpet pulling away in front passenger side; vibration noise on back dashboard (or whatever you'd call the shelf behind passenger seats); driver door handle stick problem, steering wheel clicking noise.

Purchased Honda after being recommended by so many satisfied customers/friends. Invested more then we planned but thought it was worth the investment; disappointed in quality of parts and repair work.

Honda refused to pay for the premature wear of the rear brakes even though my car a 2009 Honda Accord was still under warranty at 32k miles. I had to get new rear brake pads, because the old ones were worn down to the squealer. I also had to pay to get the rear rotors resurfaced. The part that infuriated me the most was that the dealership tried to point the blame on me, saying that i wasn't maintaining my car well enough. It doesn't matter that my previous Honda's all of the brakes lasted well past 75k, and were in excellent condition. This was a defect on Honda's part, not mine. What's the sense in having a warranty on a car if they refuse to fix it under warranty?

Accord EX-L V-6

I own a 2009 Honda Accord with 19000 miles and the rear brakes are already worn out. I took it to the Honda dealership. They replaced the rear brakes and charged me $182.49. They say there is a class action lawsuit and that will only pay you a total of $150.00.

This is a new car under warranty and Honda says it's not Honda's problem the owner of the car is responsible to correct the bill with a judge/attorney out of California.

No I have to do all the labor to fix HONDA's issues...

Time to sell the junk and switch back to American made I guess!!!

This Premature wearing of the Rear brakes is absolutely absurd. The dealership states that this is Very Common with the 2009 Honda Accord. I feel that this is a Scam. Does this mean that every third oil change I am going to have to shell out an extra $150.00 bucks. I just replaced my rear brakes on my NIssan at 38,000 miles thats more normal.

I purchased A Honda per I thouhgt that it was a reliable somewhat Maintinence Free vehicle. There needs to be a recall Like yesterday, what a SCAM to RIP off the consumer. American Honda should be ASHAMED of it self and re imburse me. The dealer just stated to pay the repair bill and file a complaint and I should get most of my money refunded to me. That is a crappy way to do Business. Shame on Honda, spread the word. I no longer recommend the Honda Accord unless you have money to BURN!

Rear brakes making a noise. Took to dealer and they said needed new brakes - 25,000 miles?? I stated there must be a defect with their brakes because the brakes should not need replacing at 25,000 miles and the rear brakes should NEVER wear out before the front. They said "it was normal" but they "replaced them with a longer lasting pad". I now find that premature wear on this year (2009) Honda Accords is a well-known issue - they never mentioned or acknowledged that. And never offered any sort of discount or price break for the work. This is the second, but last, Honda purchase from this dealer - maybe from any dealer.

I think that it is totally redic that I have only had my Honda Accord since June 2009 and I am already replacing the rear brake pads! I mean really I have my HYUNDAI for 2 YEARS and NEVER had to replace the breaks! I thought I was buying a realistic car with realistic fixes but after only a year! I see others have complained about this problem and I feel as though HONDA should correct this problem, if not I for see ALOT of LOST CUSTOMERS!!!!!

Accord LXS 3.2L

I recently moved to Buffalo from Ohio and went to dealership to get my NY inspection sticker (a process that is somewhat foreign to me). I had noticed my brakes were squeaking a little but forgot to mention it to the mechanic when I made my appointment, so I wasn't surprised when he came to me and said that my rear rotors were quite worn (below 4 mm, I believe). He went on to explain that the brakes are not lubricated when they leave the factory, and since I hadn't had them serviced, they were quite corroded. Stupidly, I agreed to have him replace them, plus service the front pads for an additional $95.

Later that evening, my husband asked why it wasn't covered under my warranty. Good question! I called the dealership and was told that brake pads are only covered for the first 12,000 miles, and are not covered under the 3 year, 36k mile warranty (which I didn't find on Honda's website version of the warranty for my car model).

My impression is that the lack of lubrication from the factory is the cause of the corrosion which wore down my brake pads. Even if it is not possible to do this process at the factory, shouldn't it be done at the dealership (granted, I don't understand the logistics of manufacturing and delivering a car to a lot) before the car is driven off the lot? Has anyone else had this problem and/or received a similar explanation?

I truly feel like an idiot that a $10 inspection fee has turned into a $412 repair that I shouldn't have jumped into.

I previously owned several Toyota cars. My wife traded her 2004 Rav 4 and bought a Honda Pilot. I liked the pilot so I traded in my 2003 Toyota Avalon for a 2009 Honda Accord. To my surprise, at 23,700 miles, I had to have my rear brakes replaced along with the rotors. The repair is going to cost me $500 and was not covered under warranty. I can't believe that Honda is jeopordizing its brand over this issue. This is my last Honda. I'm going back to Toyota or maybe try VW.

I guess I'm part of the class action lawsuit as I had to have my rear brakes replaced this morning. I bought the car new in April 2009 and the brakes surely should have lasted longer than a little over a year!! I had 2 Hondas before this one and never experienced this with them. Sure hope Honda fixes the problem so it doesn't happen again!

Tiny brake pads make for a short pad life. Very small for a 3200 lb car. Not especially difficult to replace, but should last much longer. Glad I am retired and don't put a lot of millage each year. So I guess I'm good for another 1 1/2 years.
