CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2009 Honda Accord has several serious defects – poor brakes, excessive oil consumption, & uncomfortable seats.

BRAKES: There was a class action lawsuit against Honda in 2010 for premature & excessive brake wear. See our page on Honda's brake problems for more info.

OIL CONSUMPTION: Honda issued a TSB about this in late 2011, claiming it could be fixed through a software update to the VCM (variable cylinder management). There are class action lawsuits pending. See our page about the Accord oil consumption.

UNCOMFORTABLE SEATS: Owners have consistently reported uncomfortable seats with the entire 8th generation (2008-2012) of Honda Accords. Complaints range from back pain to leg circulation problems due to bad lumbar support, cushioning, & seat angle. Complaints aren't limited to only a certain body type -- the seat comfort problems are from a wide spectrum of owner height & weight. The common theme we hear is "we never noticed this during the test drive." Unfortunately for unwary buyers, the seat pain is noticeable after 15-20 minutes.

So we bought a brand new '09 Accord in March... After about 100 Kms noticed the brake squeal issue. Brought it in to the dealership for service and they told me that the rear rotors have a "poor finish" on them. Told me that this happens sometimes because they leave their new car inventory outside and the fact that because the car hasn't been moved in months that sometimes the area not contacting the pads will become dirty. "just drive it" they said and it should clear up. Well, here we are, 2 months later and same issue. This time they replaced the rear rotors and I thought that all would be fine. But now, 2 days after the "repair" the noise is back.

I'm so frustrated that this is a new car with this pretty inexcusable problem. I hope Honda comes out with a solution to this quickly, while my car is still under warranty.

By the way, I'm from Ontario, Canada. Seems like the problem is all over North America.

Made two payments on this brand new car and the brakes continuously squeak. The dumb ass service manager tells me he just doesn't get it...they replaced the pads, gave me new brakes...blah blah blah...going in for the 4th time. Waiting for the dumb ass to call with a loaner available. Not only...the 3rd time they had the car for the brakes, the ass that was working on it, damaged the driver's door. Honda will fix that at there expense says the dumb ass service manager. I AM SOOOOO PISSED

The brakes on my brand new 2009 Honda Accord EX-L with navigation started squealing a month after I bought the car. I had about 1100 miles on the car. I took the vehicle to the Honda dealer where I bought it. They could hear no squealing; at least that's what they say. I was not in the car with them to validate their claim. The brakes continued to squeal on a daily basis. I took the car back about 2 months later. They say they still could not hear the brakes squealing after doing a test drive. The brakes continued to squeal on a daily basis. For the 3rd time, I took the car back to the dealer and insisted that I drive along. True enough, the brakes squealed very badly. They shaved the rotors. The next day the brakes started back squealing.

I sent a certified letter to the dealer about the brake problem. The service manager asked me to come back again. I took the car back for the 4th time for inspection. They heard the squealing again while I sat in the car with them. The service manager told me that I would just have to deal with the brake problem. She told me that the squealing brake issue was in the OWNER'S MANUAL, and that Honda Corporation is aware and is not going to do anything about it. She said that if I keep bringing the car back that the warranty would not continue to pay for brake inspection and service. Keep in mind that you get the owner's manual AFTER you buy the car. I can see if the brake issue was in the contract that I signed!!!!

I contacted a consumer attorney who told me that I have lemon law rights. I am going to make a follow up call to him before my 12,000 miles are up on the Accord.

Just like everyone else, I am experiencing brakes issue. It is with great disappointment that I had purchased a car that squeals. I started hearing the brakes at 7000 milies. Initially i thought my brakes are already depleted but wondered, with such a low mileage, it couldn't have been the case.

I brought it to the Honda service center and they mentioned that my brake pads are in perfect condition and the reason for the noise is that the materials used in manufacturing the brakes makes that horrible noise.

I complained at American Honda and talked to Albert Chan - the highest ranking customer service person in this region (West Coast) and he said, and I quote "It is a normal characteristic of a Honda Accord to have the brakes make the noise as of right now". He even mentioned that American Honda thinks that this is not 'yet' an issue.

Sad to say, they have poor customer service and poor car quality. To think i bought the top of the line Honda Accord - with all the fixings!

I advise people to call BBB Autoline and file a complaint. 1-800-955-5100. We need to get them informed!

Update from Jun 22, 2009: I was able to get my brakes replaced using Bendix After market - as approved by American Honda. They are still working on the replacement of the brake pad material and won't be available until later in 2009/ early 2010. I can't bear the noise anymore and I agreed for them to fix it using 'Bendix' for as long as they can document that my warranty will not be affected - which they did. Every thing was free of charge and also when the new brakes arrives. I hope this helps.

I have the exact same issues with the brakes noise and vibration. The Mechanic asked me if this was may first Honda. I said yes. he said that it was normal then, decided to work on the brakes anyway. I had only 1200 miles on the car when I brought it in.What a surprise.! It now has 2400 miles and already have begun to hear the same squealing. We can all just hope that they do try to resolve the issue. If not I'll be going back to Toyota Camry or Avalon next.

My brakes on my car have been making an aweful squeaking noise since the day I bought the car. I have taken the car in three times.

The first time, the technician said they did not hear a noise. The second time, the technician said he heard it and the "deglazed" my rotors, which fixed the problem for all of about 5 hours. I just took my car in again yesterday and they wouldn't even look at the car. I was told by a Honda dealership employee that there is no fix for the noise, and that they can't do anything.

This is completely appauling and unbelievable to me. Especially having read all the other people who have the same problem. I called Honda Customer Service and gave them an earful and the representative that i spoke to suggested that i get someone to put non- Honda brake pads on my car, but it might void my warranty.

Its pretty bad if Honda is telling you to have different brand brake pads put on, but they can't guarantee that it will help the problem.

So as of today, I am beginning a weekly schedule of calling and writing to Honda to complain. They have got to do something about this problem. I also plan on calling my dealership weekly as well. they may begin to wish they never sold me my POS Honda.

I would never recommend Honda vehicles to anyone after this experience. All of you thinking of buying a honda....DON"T. you will not get your money's worth...

Someone should redo the commercials they are running now on "the cost of owning an accord" and some how include the exssessive bills you will be paying for premature brake jobs and all the headaches trying to get Honda to provide you quality service and products.

I have a 2009 Honda Accord EX whose brakes squeaked the day I drove it off the lot in October of 2008. I didn't realize that it was my car at first; I thought it was the cars next to me. After all, who has squeaky brakes on a new car? After many trips back to the dealer in which they resurfaced my brakes, replaced my pads, and then replaced my brakes, I finally found out from my dealer, Jim Coleman in Clarksville, MD, that this is an ACKNOWLEDGED DEFECT BT HONDA on the 08 and 09 Accords, but that they don;t have a fix for it yet! Also, Honda will not authorize replacement of the brakes because that does not solve the problem!! You have no recourse but to wait for Honda to come up with a solution, but since they knew about it with the 08 model and didn't fix it on the 09 model, it is clear that they are not interested in fixing this problem. I will be getting rid of my car as quickly as possible and never buying from Honda again!

I have always loved Hondas and never had a problem until now. SQUEAKY BREAKS ! I have taken it in about 4 times. First time they said it was dust, Second time they changed my break pads, third time they changed my rotors, pads and resurfaced my front rotors. WTF ! is going on man ! I'm getting to the point where I want to claim it as a lemon if Honda doesn't do anything fast. I think to get their attention, we should bring in the MEDIA on this. I have my own mechanic and showed the rotors and pads to him and he said they looked the same as the first ones. In other words, they never changed anything. That's another thing, we never get to see them doing the actual work. Anyway, I know it's still under warranty, but I was thinking of just letting my mechanic do the brakes and rotors. Yeah I might spent some money, but I won't have to worry about it again. Even if they are not original Honda brakes, ( which is the issue ) but I bet they will work better. I heard somewhere, that ceramic brakes work better. Not sure yet though. Let me know if you have any feedback.

I too have been experiencing brake squeaks on my NEW 2009 Honda Accord EX, sedan (automatic). I got it with 123 miles on it late in March, and less than two weeks later began hearing my brakes squeak upon braking at less than 45 MPH, down to 20 MPH. It doesn't happen all the time, but several days a week, morning or afternoon, several times while driving is plenty. I finally took it in to my local Honda dealer this past Saturday and of course...they couldn't duplicate it. They took off all the tires and inspected the brakes and couldn't find anything wrong. So, I told 'em that I'd just bring it in again when it started happening again. I called American Honda Customer Service before I took it in and created a file with a number just in case. I informed the rep that there were several forums on the Web that had numerous complaints about this issue but she didn't seem to be able to locate any other records (if she even looked). All I know is that I WILL be elevating this both with the service dept at the dealer and Honda if it continues. Of course when I drove home, no squeaks.

My complaint is the same as the others. Bought a 2009 Honda Accord EXL in late October because of the solid reputation that Honda has for reliability and quality. Very disappointed when brakes started squeaking almost immediately. At first, I was told I needed to brake very hard on the highway a couple of times! Huh? Then, when the problem continued to persist, the service manager admitted that he had heard similar complaints and that it was actually the material of the brake pads that were the problem. He encouraged me to check the status of a Honda recall on the brakes which I have done almost every month.

Today, I am taking the car in for the third time to have the brakes addressed. The car is great in every other way. I am hesitant to ever buy a Honda again if Honda America doesn't remedy this issue very soon. It sucks to drive a new car that sounds like a worn-out used one.

Update from May 18, 2009: Update - took car to David Hobbs Honda dealership on Saturday, May 16th. They inspected the brakes, disassembled them and then reassembled them. Then, the Service Manager asked me to ride with one of the mechanics to replicate the problem. Well, the simple act of disassembling the brakes obviously solved the problem for the short term and I was not able to replicate the problem. The mechanic was aware of the issue as he remembered reading something about this problem from Honda. Explained to him how disappointed I was and that I would bring the car back as soon as the squeaking came back - which assuredly it would. Low and Behold, the next day, Sunday, the brakes started squeaking again.

FYI, when you bring the car in, tell them to hop in and you will replicate the problem right then. Don't wait until they put the car up on hoists and manage to do a short-term fix-up. I'm starting to become really angry about this.

Update from May 20, 2009: I just spoke with a Honda America representative. He states that Honda engineers are aware of an issue and are looking into a decision regarding the rear brake pads of the Accord. The representative anticipates a decision of whether or not to offer a counter-measure to this complaint by July 1st. He advised me to bring the car into the dealership if the safety or driveability of the car became an issue. He stated that he hoped for a resolution to the problem and I agreed.

I also called the Service Manager at David Hobbs Honda and he told me that Honda America was aware of the problem and at this time did not have a solution. I thanked him for the information, told him I was aware of the decision making timeline, and promised to bring my car back in if a favorable decision for the cosumer had not been made by July 1st. I explained that the braking noise had already returned for my vehicle and to inform other consumers of Honda America's response if they brought their new Accord in for brake noise as well.

What a joke. I decided to purchase a Honda rather than lease an Infiniti (had 2 G35x models over the past 7 years) and boy what a mistake that was. The brakes squeal every time i put my foot on the brake petal. It is very embarrassing to come down the street in a 2009 accord that sounds like a 1989 accord.I brought it to the dealer and they said they test drove it and didn't hear a thing. They told me there was nothing wrong and sent me on my way. I might as well be driving a Metro bus. What a disappointment this car has been.

OK. So I decided to lease a brand new 2009 Honda Accord EX on March 28, 2009, It's the first time i went with Honda! Everyone always raves about Honda so i decided to trade in my Toyota for it. About 2 weeks later I noticed a faint squeezing noises when I started to break. I thought nothing of it. Then as the day went on it was getting louder and louder. I let it go that day, but now it's an ON GOING problem!! It's so embarrassing pulling up to a stop light in a brand new car and having to hear this awful squeezing sound like an old car coming from your breaks! So I called the dealer and the manager said "yeah, thats the type of breaks they are, ALL new cars do that!" I wasn't happy with that answer. I called a different location and another manager said "oh yeah it's ok, if it really bothers you just take your garden hose and water the breaks every morning before you take your car out" WTF?????? is he serious???? a brand new car, and i have to water the breaks so they wont squeak???? you have GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!! i told him i live in an apartment and i don't have a hose he said "oh then i don't know maybe throw a glass of water on it!" I'm soo upset i ever got a Honda, i should of stuck w/ my Toyota! it NEVER gave me problems even when it was 7 years old! and now my Honda is a month old and giving me a headache!! And now I don't know if anyone noticed, i started noticing a vibrating feeling on my gas pedal when i accelerate. Does anyone know what that is?? a brand new car, with only about 500 miles on it! STAY away from the new HONDA ACCORDS!! it's a nightmare!!

Brakes started howling with only 1200 miles, so I made an appointment and dealer replaced front pads and resurfaced rotors, but like clockwork, next couple hundred miles, same noise came back. I contacted both American Honda and the service manager at the dealer and again got no where and no answers. Never would have expected this from Honda. Starting to realize that Honda is more an American Car Company to the likes of GM, Ford, Chrysler, ETC. then a Japanese Car company building in America. If Honda has in fact turned into this type of company, it truly is a sad day and Soichiro Honda would surely have a tear roll from his eye to see his once revered company.

I purchased my 2009 Honda Accord EX-LV on 3/25/09 with 50 miles on it. By 100 miles the brakes were squealing. The dealership replaced the rotors & pads. They said it could have been because the car sat for 9 months before they received it at the dealership and that the rotors got glazed over. I was satisfied with the new rotors and drove home about 7 miles with no problems. Didn't drive my car for 2 days. The 4th day with new rotors & pads...you guessed it... the squealing is back! Tomorrow will be another call to the dealership. Thanks to this website I am more informed about the problem and am going to advise them of same. Very frustrating! The car is othewise awesome!

Update from Jul 31, 2009: I have spoken to American Honda on 3 occasions and have only been successful in opening a "case". The brakes still squeal. They are worse than ever! I have been told all of the same stuff as everyone else on this site. It is interesting to note that not all '09 Accords have this problem. It seems to be a select few. At one point I was told that it was narrowed down to certain VIN#s. Since replacing the brakes & rotors does not correct the problem, it would seen that there is some type of vehicle construction problem. My friend owns a brand new '09 Accord EXLV with no squeaky brakes. I am thoroughly disgusted with Honda and the length of time it is taking to correct this problem. I wish I had never traded in my "08.

I purchased my beautiful new car 11/29/08, and noticed the squealing brakes within days. I called the dealership, Findley Auto Henderson, and was told that this is normal and due to dust on the brakes. They advised me to hose them down, or just be patient and the problem would self-resolve. I felt uncomfortable about hosing down the brakes, and put up with the squealing for a couple months, then contacted the dealer again. I was told that I didn't 'drive right". I've driven for 40 years - Rambler American, Pontiac Tempest, Chevy SS, Cadillac, Saturn, 300ZX & Landrover - no problems.

I took the car to their "chief mechanic". He asked me to drive and heard the squeals. He drove it with very little squealing, and told me I probably "rest" my foot on the brake pedal when driving - not true. He then said that I brake too early and had glazed the brakes. He did something to remove the glazing and sent me on my way, with instructions to avoid breaking until necessary.

I do not believe that I brake prematurely, but I tried to follow his instructions. If the brakes are applied hard, the squealing is minimal, but the danger of rear-ending someone or being rear-ended far outweighs the annoyance of the squealing. Whatever he did to reduce the problem didn't work.

I took the car in, and had the chief mechanic drive it again. It squealed like a pig, and I was told that they would try to get permission for new brakes. They installed new brakes, but the problem is still not resolved.

The dealership has never admitted to any problem with the brakes. Finding your website & others with the same complaint has verified that a problem does exist.

I bought a beautiful new $30,000 car that sounds like a clunker when I brake, and I feel like I'm driving an unsafe vehicle.

I have attempted to get help from the dealer. They tell me that they are waiting for an upgraded brake pad to be released. It has been seven months since I was told this. The noise is awful! Brakes squeak all the time. I also had a noise coming from the brake pedal, that was taken care of after three visits. Finally, I have a noise coming from the gas pedal which has not been resolved. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Same complaint as everyone. Brakes squeak consistently and very loud. Its as if the car were a few years old. I just purchased the car in October of 2008. I have taken my vehicle in to the dealer. At first they would tell me that it was normal then it was that the brakes were dirty. I was even told that it was the weather. We continued persisting and now it is that "a bullitin was posted in theire system that states that brake pads are being replaced to cure the problem." It has been almost 7 months and we are still waiting. To add to that problem, I am also having problems with the gas pedal. I makes "clicking noise" every time I reach around 30-35mph. Same as others have reported, the brakes on our new 2009 Accord squeal with light braking pressure. Dealership was nice, noted the problem and told me Honda is looking into it. They said there was a similar problem with the Odyssey a couple of years ago. Dealership suggested I inquire about the problem each time I come in with the car to see if a solution is in place... "not a safety issue," but for me, a definite annoyance that prevents me from becoming attached to this new car.
