CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, engine shuts off while driving, & peeling paint. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

Engine stalling while driving in the 1999 Accord is typically caused by a defective ignition switch -- inexpensive to repair (under $200) but dangerous.

Peeling paint has also been an issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

1999 Honda Accord 4dr at with 77K miles. Without warning, car stalled when decelerating on freeway off ramp. "maint req" light came on. Power door locks clicked up and down. Able to safely come to a stop. Car restarted right away. A few days later, when leaving my workplace parking lot, the car stalled again after about 1 block, fortunately I was only driving about 20 mph. Same symptoms -- maint req light came on and the power door locks clicked up and down. Restarted car right away. Local mechanic could not replicate issue, but suggested replacing ignition switch due to symptoms described. I had him perform the replacement, even through ignition switch was replaced under recall in Sept 2005 when car had about 35K miles.

On Monday, February 22, 2010, I was driving on the highway when the battery, ABS and door lights suddenly displayed on the dashboard. The care was driving fine after this but about a mile later, the engine shut off. I noticed the drive belts had come off. Roadside assistance was contacted to tow the car to the nearest location within 15miles. Hence, the car was towed to my destination, then eventually towed to richfield-bloomington Honda where they determined that the crankshaft key was installed incorrectly causing the pulley to be wobbly forcing the belts to come off while driving. Brookdale Honda performed the maintenance repair that has been linked to this incident since the crank shaft bolt was not tightened to the right torque. They are refusing to take responsibility for damage as a result of technician error.

My car will randomly stall out when stop or driving. Its stalled while stopped at a light, turning after stopped at a stop sign, on the highway during rush hour traffic. All the lights will come on, the RPM will fall to zero, its will kind of chug like if a manual were to stall even though it is an automatic. The spark plugs, ignition switch, distributor and pvc valve have been replaced.

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord. While pulling into the driveway and before the contact could turn off the vehicle, it shut itself off. Later, while attempting to make a right turn, the vehicle shut off completely. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the service dealer and they stated that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. The contact stated that he received a recall notice in 2002 for the electrical ignition switch, which could degrade and cause the vehicle to hesitate and/or crash without warning. The manufacturer stated that because the recall repairs were performed once, they would not take responsibility for the repairs a second time. The VIN and NHTSA campaign id number were unknown. The failure and current mileages were less than 109,000.

Defective egr valve on my 1999 Honda Accord. The car was brand new when I purchased it and it only has 96K miles. I am the only owner. It burns oil and no one can determine why. I just replaced 2 valves due to the oil and now my egr valve is needing to be replaced. After reviewing the complaints, there are numerous complaints on the egr valve for a 1999 Honda Accord. It should be recalled based on the number of complaints I have seen.

Owner of 1999 Honda Accord LX automatic transmission 4-cylinder engine.approximately 53,000 miles on odometer. Driving when heard noise. Pulled over and lost power steering. Car stopped running. Parked in parking lot. Looked under hood saw belt loose. Had car towed to independent Honda shop. Mechanic states that bolt on crankshaft pulley was never tightened properly at factory, allowing crankshaft pulley mechanism to let belts slip off. Damage done to end of crankshaft needs replacement. Mechanic states called Honda dealership in calsbad, ca and they have seen three cars come in like this. Safety concern since I was on a small side road only going 25 mph, could have had an accident if on freeway. Had small children in car at time and also my realtor, could be a witness. Car inspected at Honda dealership on 6-17-03.. mechanic states he called calsbad, ca dealership and they hav eseen at least one car per month with same problem.
