CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, engine shuts off while driving, & peeling paint. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.
The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.
Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.
Engine stalling while driving in the 1999 Accord is typically caused by a defective ignition switch -- inexpensive to repair (under $200) but dangerous.
Peeling paint has also been an issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

The vehicle stalled without warning while coming to a stop, the vehicle also stalled while driving and the consumer was forced to pull over. The dealer has been notified.
While driving, the crankshaft/pulley engine broke, causing vehicle to stall out. Almost causing an accident. Consumer also stated that a bolt inside the engine was missing, and some part of the engine was defective which caused the crankshaft pulley to break (all part outside engine).
Crankshaft bolt appears to be sheared off. That held the pully in place which holds on the timing chain and 2 other belts. I contacted the Honda corporation who was in touch with wilde Honda and was told that there is no defect with the bolt. I have spoken to many other mechanics and they have said that it is most likely due to the factory torqueing the bolt down to tight which may have caused a stress fracture. Wilde Honda also said that it was due to the air intake filter being changed and the tires being worn. I find that hard to believe and have been told that, thatis highly unlikely. Would you please check into this and let me know if there are any other cases like this. Thank you.
