CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, engine shuts off while driving, & peeling paint. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

Engine stalling while driving in the 1999 Accord is typically caused by a defective ignition switch -- inexpensive to repair (under $200) but dangerous.

Peeling paint has also been an issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

My vehicle was in the left turn lane waiting for the light to turn green. I went and didnt realize the far right lane was for parking only on a 1 way street left headed East it was a 1 way with 2 lanes moving forward a 1 lane next to the curb where vehicles park in front of there residents. I slammed into the back of the parked white Chevy truck. My vehicle came to a sudden stop forcing my body forward towards the windshield. My seatbelt only restrained my body so far so I used my foot to apply the brake. My cars passenger side air bag did deploy but the drivers side did not. My vehicle needed to be towed because it was not drivable. I then later had a friend drive me to the emergency room. I didnt want to go by ambulance due to pandemic in place. About 2 to 3 weeks later I recieved the recall letter in my mailbox. Since the accident I have been unable to work or even daily functions. I have a crushed heel and unable to walk. Sever pain and swelling. My life has completely changed.

Car repeatedly shuts off when driving. I was driving in the highway and my Honda lights started flickering and the speedometer hands started flickering. My car then shut off and my wheel locked. I tried to restart and it would not turn back on. It sounded like my car was dragging something but I checked underneath and didn't see anything. After gassing the car while starting, it finally started back up but you could tell it was barely being powered. It sounded like it was trying hard to power but it was only doing it so much. Now I'm sitting still on side the highway and it also runs hot so I filled the antifreeze and now I'm letting T run, hoping that the antifreeze is the cause of these problems. My car sounds awful!!!!! it doesn't even have 150K miles!!!! for it to be a 1999!!!!!!

My vehicle turned off while I was driving. I was driving about 35 mph on a main St. The vehicle beeped and the green key light lit up on the dash, then all dash lights went out, the power steering stopped working and the brakes stopped as well. I had to slam my foot on the brakes to keep from rear ending an 18 wheeler.

My 99 Honda Accord has started loosing power and shutting down while driving, took to independent mechanic who replaced plugs and wires we have replaced wires twice in less then 6 months but this hasn't fixed the problem. After reading the complaints I see quite a few others have same problem. This is a safety issue and car should be recalled!

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord. While driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact parked, shifted into neutral, and restarted the vehicle; however, the failure recurred. A warning light illuminated, but the contact was unable to identify the name of the warning light. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was confirmed that the vehicle was not included in a recall and did not provide a diagnosis for the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 236,988.

Oil is pouring out the bottom of my car. Oil also filled the radiator overflow. The problem is a porous engine casting. This can cause the car to sieza as it loses oil quite rapidly. It cannot be driven. There are many reported cases of this online, but Honda is taking no responsibility. A new engine is required. While this is an older car in years, the mileage is low for a Honda of its age and for any Honda for that matter and a probelm that requires an entire new engine is unacceptable. I contacted Honda and they will do nothing.

On March 3, 2015 my wife's 1999 Accord would not start. We had the starter replaced for about $550 but the car was still near impossible to start and the engine can cut out at any time once you do have it started. The auto repairman told us the keys made poor contact inside the ignition switch and that was why it was still so hard to start. He taught us a tedious process to start the car but since then when we drive it the engine can suddenly stop running and stopp, also disabling the power steering. The car is no longer safe to drive. It stopped running 4 times on a 10 mile trip today.

I wanted to complain because this is the 2nd time within 5 years that I'm having to have my egr port cleaned again which is costly. Also I the same thing with the ignition switch wires, which were recalled and replaced 5 years later also trying to spark a fire. I am still the original owner of my Honda and having the same problem once again about my egr after I paid lots of $$$$$$$$$$.I think somebody need to investigate if the parts only last for 5 years at a time.

As I was driving my vehicle on the highway, the engine suddenly turned off. As a result, I had to maneuver the car to the side of the highway as I coasted to a stop. During this time it was difficult to steer. I was able to turn the car on again and be on my way. It then happened again several miles down the highway. This was about 5 days ago and it has not happened since.

1999 Honda Accord was subject of a recall in May 2002 for ignition switch that the car would shut down unexpectedly. Repair was completed on subject auto and has not had any further problems with the switch until two weeks ago. The car would shut down and did at 65mph in traffic. Managed to steer to the roadside and restart the car. This could have been a major accident! the switch has again been replaced at my expense. This is not right.

While driving the vehicle, the engine will quit completely without any warning or indication of malfunction; it just stops. Sometimes it will start up again immediately, sometimes multiple attempts where it catches for a fraction of a second and stops again have been required over a period of several minutes. Over time, it seemed to become clear that turning the key to the off position instead of attempting a start from acc would almost always result in immediate restart. The issue disappeared over what was a fairly cold winter, but has returned with the warming weather. Total number of occurrences: Somewhere around fifty or higher. Sometimes it would happen numerous times the same day, increasingly with increased temperature, and seemed much more prone to occur when the air-conditioning was in use. The repair shop was never able to capture an obd code with its recording device. As a commuter on rural roads, this has been inconvenient but so far not unsafe, but there is a potential for it occurring under adverse traffic conditions that might be unsafe, e.g., at highway speed with close following traffic on a road with no shoulder. These incidents may or may not be related to two repairs that almost immediately preceded the first occurrence of this problem: 1. the car wouldn't start one day, no electrical output at all was available, though the battery was only a few months old. A local (I.e., non-dealer) repair shop replace the negative battery cable that grounds the battery to the vehicle. 2. timing belt replacement was performed a couple of months prior, again by a local repair shop.
