This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Failure of internal hydrolic pump for anti locking brake system. Part costs over $1000 not including labor per dealership. As cost is prohibitive, problem not fixed causing loss of anti locking brake system. Notified GM customer complaint department and they said nothing could be done because vehicle was out of warranty. Asked GM complaint department if they could get description of pump system made by kelsey hayes to discover why failure accured so prematurely. They said they could not give out such information. I feel this is a safety issue and some help should be given. Thank you.
On two occasions, I believe that the anti lock brakes malfunctioned, causing an increase in stopping distance and resulting in a crash. The first occurred in about 1996 when a car in front of me suddenly stopped. I applied the brakes, but was unable to stop in time. The roadway was wet at the time. I had the damage repaired at a body shop chosen by the insurance company and asked them to check the brakes also. They reported that the brakes were fine. The vehicle was owned at the time by my employer. I later purchased the vehicle from my employer and took it to a GM dealer for inspection. They reported no problems. On 8/17/99, on I-10 near phoenix, the vehicle in front of me suddenly braked and hit the vehicle in front of it. I braked hard and began to steer around, as it felt like I would not stop in time. The car in front of me bounced into in the direction I was steering and I collided with the rear of that vehicle.
When the brakes were applied the pedal went to the floor, causing extended stopping distance, and resulting in a minor collision. The dealer has been notified.

Slow start also noted (see 033199). 030998 (see 091897): Wires under hood smoked-ignition switch shorted out & replaced @ independent repair facility. Also noted wipers not working (see 112198). 042098: Pinion seal leaking/replaced @ independent facility/check engine light on-rough start (see 033199). 060198: Heat/smoke @ dash & alarm malfunctioning-short in driver side seat lumbar support switch wiring repaired @ independent facility. 112198 (see 030998): Windshield wiper motor assembly replaced @ independent facility/hard starting also noted (see 033199). 022399: Egr valve replaced @ dealer but 0699-code 32 on computer @ independent facility (egr valve); dealer advised central port injector leaking (see 070396). 033199: Central port injector replaced again, @ independent facility (originally replaced 070396, reported faulty 091897, 042098, 112198, 022399). 070499: Anti-lock brakes failed @ 65 mph, resulting in tripped rollover & 3 injuries-vehicle totalled; wheels locked, skidded 300' on straight stretch of road (wet/dry). Injuries included severe lacerations from broken glass, contusions, seat belt burn @ neck (seat belts non-adjustable), and abrasions. Manufacturer has been contacted (072299).
I have had Ford and monroe dealers look at the brakes, they dont know what is wrong with them. Some times the brakes lock up, some times the pedal goes to the floor, almost causing accidents. Twice the front rotors have turned cherry red. GMC dealer, tully GMC in nashua nh, and Chevy dealer, talarico in milford nh, refused to investigate the problems. Brake pads and rotors need work just 4,000 miles after being done already. I feel this is dangerous, and no one knows how to fix it!!
ABS system does not work; brakes slide and make grinding noise when applied on uneven road or going over bumps; sometimes brakes go out briefly then return.
When applying the brakes the pedal goes to the floor and the vehicle does't stop. Owner rear ended a vehicle when ABS malfunctioned. Dealer can't duplicate the problem.
Front right brakes began to squeak, within 5 days took vehicle to franchise brake repair shop (Firestone) and then to GMC dealer for brake service/inspection. Result: Premature wear of passenger-side brake pads/gouged rotor beyond repair. Driver-side rotor damaged but serviceable. Additionally, Firestone's opinion is passenger-side calipers may be damaged, and that both rotors should be replaced.
Driving at approx 55 mph ABS brakes became inoperative, causing the consumer to rear end another vehicle in front. Brakes did not brake fast enough. Also, no deployment of air bags upon impact.
Consumer experiencing ongoing problem with ABS system failing, causing vehicle not to stop properly. Dealer notified, and has inspected/ repairs and problem still occurs.
When applying the ABS brake pedal in a constant downward position the system properly engages but releases, causing extended stopping distance. Cause unknown. Dealer states that a problem may exist within the ABS computer system.
While driving vehicle about 30 mph and when applying brake pedal to stop vehicle, the vehicle does not stop on time. ABS system engages too soon. This has been happening for long time. Dealer was contacted.
When consumer eased up on the brakes, the pedal became soft and went to the floor, resulting in an extended stopping distance. The dealer has been notified.
