While driving the power steering stopped functioning and an error message popped up stating that it was not working. I stopped the vehicle turned off the ignition and restarted the vehicle and the power steering began working. This has happened twice in the past month.
The power steering stopped working and my wife had to make an emergency stop on I 95. We turned the vehicle off and restarted it and the power steering worked again for awhile. The next day it happened 2 more times. I think this is the same issue as the 2015 recall. I called my GMC dealer and they said they could not help me because my Vin was not on the recall list.
Power steering shuts off while driving. I have to stop the vehicle and turn off and then re-start to get the power steering back working. This can happen at any time regardless of when or how long I've been driving. The power steering seems to shut off for no reason.

On three occasions the power steering malfunction warning came on. Brought it to Prime GMC. Both times software updates were performed. On third time they said needs new steering column. The steering is very difficult at low speeds. I can clear situation by turning off and back on.
The power steering intermittently fails, and the vehicle is almost impossible to steer during the failure. I took the vehicle to GM dealer, Ultimate Auto GMC/BUICK in Mountain Home, Arkansas. They told me the fix would be to replace a power steering module and the cost would be $1,600. I was aware the previous year's model had the same problem and was recalled. I called GM and they would not help with a recall. To me it is obvious that my truck has the same problem as the 2015 model, but they won't admit it. My safety was at risk because I could hardly turn the truck. I do get a warning message on the dash display.
The power steering has gone out while driving the vehicle 4 times in the last 3 months. The last time, my wife almost had an accident. She was turning into S driveway and last power steering and almost hit another vehicle because she had trouble turning the truck. I found out GMC is recalling about 60,000 vehicles for this issue but my vehicle is not on the list so I want to report the problem to your Agency so you have it on record in case I have an accident
I will be driving down the interstate and all of a sudden, my power steering would go out. Sometimes it would go out just driving down a residential road going 25 or 30 miles an hour. I would have to stop someplace, turn it off and wait a while and then turn it back on and it would work again. If I don't wait long enough, the power steering still wouldn't work after restarting. When this would happen, the "service power steering" light would come on. Also, "stabilitrack" light would come on.
GM case #[xxx]; GM recall bulletin: 15595A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign id for recall: 16V054 GM issued a recall bulletin related to a defect in certain 2015 GMC Canyon trucks due to loss of power steering due to a poor electrical connection within the torque sensor harness connector. This presents a greater risk of a crash and a safety concern. My name is [xxx] and I own a 2016 GMC Canyon VIN #[xxx]. my stability track indicator came on and my power steering stopped working. I took my vehicle into a GM dealer and was charged $180 to diagnose the problem. I was told due to low voltage the recommendation was a new battery. The battery was replaced costing me an additional $140. The next day, the stability track indicator came on and my power steering stopped working again. I took it into the GM dealer again and was told this time there was an issue with my torque sensor which is the same issue in the recall bulletin #15595A for the 2015 trucks related to power steering. Concerned and frustrated, I called GM and was issued with the aforementioned case #. I was told someone would call me, which no one did. The dealer then informed me that GM would cover 80% of the cost still leaving me with a bill of $734! I wrote this compliant to GMC for several reasons and including NHTSA due to the safety issue. This is obviously the same issue being experienced in the 2016 trucks not just the 2015 trucks. I am bringing attention to this issue as this issue may constitute a recall needed for the 2016 which hasn't been done. This is not only concerning as the issue presents risk of a crash, a safety concern and owners like me having to incur out of pocket expenses. I am requesting an investigation into my issue and for GMC consideration of reimbursement of $734 in addition to $320 out of pocket expenses. Power steering goes out while vehicle is moving at either normal speed or low speed. Error messages appear indicating loss of power steering and traction light comes on. Shutting down engine and restarting can clear. If shutting down doesn't work disconnecting battery cable can clear the problem. This problem occurred numerous times over several days. It occurred both on city streets and rural highway. It occurred during turns and while driving straight. It occurred at normal highway speeds and at lower parking lot speeds. This occurred six times in one day. After clearing the last time we returned home and took the truck to a GM repair shop. This same problem has been recalled in the 2015 GMC Canyon (recall N202313200). The loss of power steering allowed the 63 year old female driver to ease off the rural highway however when the power steering failed in a city parking lot the male driver had to use all his strength to steer the vehicle. In the event this had occurred with the female driver in a situation where a turn had to be navigated she would not have had the strength to negotiate the turn possibly causing serious injury or property damage. Owner has opted to have repaired at his own cost due to safety concerns. Total cost to replace the steering gear assembly including the power steering control module was $1565.21
Highway driving on 3/24 and two lights warning me that power steering and stability(traction) control were disengaged. Traveling approximately 70mph, steady speed on smooth road,
II was driving my GMC Canyon and the power steering went out and the warning light came on and "loss of power steering, drive with care". I parked the care and waited 15 minutes, restarted the truck and the warning light went off and I was able to drive home without a problem. The next day I was driving at low speed and the same warning light came on with the additional warnings of "stabilitrak" and "steering assist reduced" and I lost power steering. I pulled over and restarted the truck and the light stayed on and I had no power steering. I continued driving home without power steering and stopped for a short while and when I restarted the truck I had power steering again. I did a web search and it said 2015 and 2016 Canyons and Colorado's were having this issue but only 3000 we recalled. I wanted to make you aware of my problem and see if the recall should be for more than the 3000 vehicles.
Unable to get the keys out of the ignition when come to a complete stop and is in park.. the key won't get released from the ignition.. I have to restart the truck several times and repeat taken the keys out. It is as if the ignition won't recognize the key..
The power steering has gone out completely on several occasions. Vehicle is very difficult to control especially when on interstate at higher rate of speed. This is dangerous. It is a shame that GMC only included 2015 Canyons in recall and not 2016 but also that NHTSA has not intervened on this very dangerous malfunction.
Like thousands of other Canyons/colorados, power steering fails at random times causing steering wheel to be ripped from hands. Extremely dangerous. Happens at all speeds, moving or stationary. I don't understand why it's only recalled on 2015 models when it's exactly same problem.
