Rear coil spring broke going down highway - lost control of vehicle. Almost caused a very severe accident. Broken coil spring came within inches of slicing the tire. Was told by Ford dealer only the front coil springs are qualified for recall replacement (only after they fail). This makes no sense. Another garage reported seeing these rear springs broken all the time.
: the contact stated while driving in reverse at 10mph, both rear coil springs fractured and broke. The vehicle was driven to the local dealership for repairs.
: the contact stated while traveling 30 mph, there was a noise coming from the rear end. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop that determined the driver side rear coil spring was broke and rubbed on the tire. Also, the repair shop determined the inner axle boot was leaking on the front passenger side.
: the contact stated while pulling into the driveway at 5 mph, a loud snap was heard. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, where it was determined the rear passenger side coil spring broke.
1) no event lead up to the failure 2) the left side rear coil spring broke, punctured the tire - on the night before the car drove fine. The next morning it was making a terrible "whinnying/singing" noise from the back. The noise was from the spring making contact with the tire. 3) repaired.

Left rear coil spring fractured on my 2001 Ford Taurus passenger car requiring replacement of the coil spring and strut assembly and tire. In addition, the aaa repair shop had a four wheel alignment performed on my vehicle. I have the old broken coil spring and strut assembly part at my home.
My car was riding low in the rear for about 2 years. I heard a loud noise one night, just after I started engine and had driven only a few yards. Left car that night at bill marsh Ford-newtown, pa. The next morning I found a piece of my right rear coil spring in my parking space at work. Both rear springs were replaced. I was told they were not part of a recall, only the front springs are covered.
Driving on side road, pulled onto main road and rear coil spring fractured, puncturing my brand new tire. Had to replace both rear springs, old part is available.
Car was brought to dealer to repair recall on front springs, repair was made and mechanic then told me of rear spring that was broken and had cut into the left rear tire, requiring a new spring and tire at a cost of $517.46.

Rear coil springs cracked on my 2001 Ford Taurus sel. I was lucky enough that they both cracked while parked at the curb and not while being driven by my wife with son in the car.

Car parked in garage, started up heard a bang, tire was blown out- tried to reverse out of garage -rear wheels locked up - called auto club they put small doughnut spare on rear drivers side (blown out side) -took vehicle to local garage- upon inspection mechanic said rear springs had fractured and punctured the tire and needed replacing, this with less than 50 000 miles on vehicle -cost totaled $465.60 plus taxes. Had this happened the previous day we were traveling at highway speeds to a friends cottage -we could have been killed!!
The rear coil spring and mounting bolt broke, causing the broken spring to contact the tire. The tire did not puncture. The parts were replaced at my expense at a Ford dealer.
: the contact stated the vehicle had been handling as though there were windy conditions for approximately 1 week. Also, while backing out of the driveway the contact heard something fall from the bottom of the vehicle.
