CarComplaints.com Notes: Power steering problems started rearing their ugly head in the 2010 Fusion, so you'd think Ford had plenty of time to make sure those problems didn't creep into the 2012. But here we are.
And much like the power steering, we’re still seeing the same throttle body failures that started in 2010 continue in 2012.

4 times in the past month, my vehicle has experienced a loss of power steering assist while in motion which causes the steering wheel to lock and I am unable to turn. While this is happening, the car beeps and a light comes on the dashboard that says something like steering wheel assist failure or power steering assist. This has occured 4 times and is very dangerous as I am unable to turn the wheel to turn the vechiel to the side of the road for safety. The car is in motion all while the steering wheel shuts down. This will end up causing an accident one day. I have reviewed my VIN and I do not see an active recall for this, however when inputing my car information, it shows that there was a recall for the same issue for cars: 2012 Ford Fusion and I believe my car should have been part of this recall. All 4 times that it has happened, the car was in motion, in a city street while turning the wheel to make a turn. Although I do not have a picture to show at the moment, next time it happens I will have one should you contact me and need an image of what is occuring.
My vechicle is in motion and then all of a sudden the steering wheel locks, the car makes noises and I get an error on my dashboard that says steering wheel assist or power steering assit. While this is hapening, I am unable to move the steering wheel. It is locked. Very dangerous as I am driving and one day can cause an accident due to this malfunction. This has happened 4 times within the month.

I come to you with great concern about a situation that recently happened to me with my 2012 Ford Fusion. On January 17, 2019, I was driving 60 miles per hour down the road with my daughter. While I am driving with no notice, my power steering completely went out. I was unable to move my steering wheel; the safety of this issue was extreme, and I feel that because this was a recall my experience should be under the safety of the customer and the reliability of the Ford industry and the recall would have been granted with no concerns. I purchase this vehicle brand new as a 2012 Ford Fusion sel, I've been the only owner to this car and I because I must commute to work my miles have been higher than average 2012 cars. Two years ago I brought my car into the Ford dealership for maintenance that needs to be completed and I asked about the recall of the power steering and they said, "don't bring it in until there's a problem" since I feel Ford has never geared me the wrong direction I literally took their word seriously and I didn't do anything about. Two years later I now have a serious problem not only was the safety of me and my child at the forefront the problem now the financially it's becoming a barrier to my life. When I called last week, even the Ford dealership agreed that you wouldn't have fixed the power steering unless there was a problem. When I call up to Ford dealership asking about this recall and them telling me that I am over the mileage of the recall/warranty and they will not cover even a dime of this recall gives me great concern. I called NHTSA vehicle safety hotline and they assured me that there was no mileage restriction on this recall and it was just a tenure range that needed to be completed. I'm asking you to review and I'm requesting that I received the $1800 reimbursement check back.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. While operating the vehicle, the power steering malfunctioned and caused the steering wheel to become very difficult to turn in either direction. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 74,000.
I got out of my job on a Saturday and once I got to my 2012 Ford Fusion and turned it on, my dashboard display a message saying "service power steering now". the steering was so stiff to the point that it's too dangerous to drive it out on the streets. I then got on my phone to see if there's a quick fix to it and ended up finding out that my car has a recall for the power steering. So I called my mom to come pick me up and leave the car at my job's parking lot. Once I got home I called my Ford dealer to find out more about this recall, but their customer service was closed. So I waited till Monday to call them, once I called them I ended up finding out that my car has another recall relating to the passenger's airbag. So I had a tow truck take my car to nearest Ford dealer so they can resolve the problem. I talked to a representative and he told me since my car had been in an accident (past owner had the accident) that they might not service the power steering but they will fix the airbags for sure. So I left my car at the dealer. Later on the day, he calls me saying that cars over 150K are no longer eligible for the power steering service but that they will resolve the airbag problem. To me it seems unfair for them not to resolve the power steering problem because I didn't know anything about any recall for my car and that this a factory defect. It's unsafe to drive a car when it still has a factory problem and can happen anytime, even when I'm driving.
