CarComplaints.com Notes: Power steering problems started rearing their ugly head in the 2010 Fusion, so you'd think Ford had plenty of time to make sure those problems didn't creep into the 2012. But here we are.

The Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS) is a mess. It fails at an alarming rate. Don’t believe us? Take a look at NHTSA’s data on the subject.

And much like the power steering, we’re still seeing the same throttle body failures that started in 2010 continue in 2012.

As I was driving home from work my steering wheel became extremely hard to turn causing me to barely miss running into the back of a 18 wheeler. Luckily I wasn't far from my daughters house. I made it there but could not park. Car had to be pushed straight back into a spot. Now the steering wheel is completely locked. Car will start will move straight forward or back. Can not turn the wheel at all

I was driving as normal, went to pick up my siblings to go see our dad. A couple minutes after driving from getting my siblings, my car message center said service power steering and service advancetrac. I was able to make it to my destination without any steering problems. I turned my car off when I got to my dad's and when I turned it back on to leave the steering wheel was locked and my message center said to service power steering now and service advancetrac. 3 days later I have a low tire pressure warning.

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Fusion. Shortly after owning the vehicle, the steering wheel became difficult to turn in either direction. Mac haik Ford (10333 katy fwy, houston, tx 77024, (713) 932-5000) was notified of the failure. An independent mechanic stated that the failure was related to NHTSA campaign number: 15V340000 (steering). Upon speaking to the manufacturer, the dealer indicated that a software update was provided per an unknown recall before the contact owned the vehicle. The manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. The contact felt that the remedy failed to provide a permanent repair. The failure mileage was not available.

I informed my Ford dealer during an air bag recall that I was also experiencing problems with the steering on the car. Regardless if the car was moving or stopped, turning the steering from the 12 O'clock position either right or left, it would try to "jump" to the 10 or 2 O'clock position. It was disturbing enough that my wife would no longer drive the car. After diagnosis, the dealer informed me the problem was with the power steering gear assembly, the repair cost would exceed 2000 dollars. Ford has had so many problems with the steering on these cars that the NHTSA issued a recall on this a couple of years ago (15S18). The problem is severe enough that Ford has extended the warranty for the power steering assembly to 150,000 miles (15N01) my car has 82,000 miles on it. The warranty only works if certain diagnostic trouble codes pop up during diagnosis. Since my car did not suffer a complete failure I was not covered under the extended warranty. If you read through the NHTSA complaints, many consumers had complete power steering failures but also did not meet Ford requirements for warranty repair! if you view NHTSA complaint section on the 2012 Fusion. There are a total of 1601 complaints as if this writing for this vehicle - almost 50% deal with just the steering! the NHTSA has completely let Ford off the hook on this issue. Instead of insuring the public safety, the NHTSA has allowed Ford to create a new income stream. Is the NHTSA waiting for a Ford owner to lose control of their car and slam into a mini van full of kids before requiring the manufacture to completely rectify this safety hazard? reprogramming a control module and allowing the manufacture to refuse to provide extended warranty repairs is not cutting it.

Shortly after purchasing our 2012 Ford Fusion & picking up our 9yr old daughter from school one day, I found myself in a scary situation just a few yards from my driveway. With our neighborhood being a turn off of a 4-lane highway, when attempting to make that turn that day, the power steering went out resulting in it being very difficult to manuver the turn landing my daughter & I off the road & in the ditch after getting it to the dealership, they found the problem resulted from a recall on the vehicle that needed repairing however, the dealership also discovered the recall had already been performed when owned by previous owner. The recall performed before had failed & was not a solution as the repair needed to be performed again. The problem was, when the dealership notified me about the recall, I was told I would be responsible for the cost of the recall because the manufacturer said when the recall was performed the first time, a 90 day warranty was placed on the recall that if it needed performing again, I would be responsible for the repair cost. My confusion is, if there is a recall on the car because of a safety issue discovered & you're notified of the recall & to bring it in to be repaired... shouldn't that repair also be a solution & if so, why is there a warranty placed on the solution? my understanding, a solution had not been found, resulting in the manufacturer knowing before the recall would need to be performed again and again costing them a great loss. At the time, I could not afford the large lump sum cost of the recall work & with the car not drivable, needing a vehicle daily for traveling to & from my job 60 miles, obtaining a drivable car also obtained another monthly payment & after obtaining that drivable car, I found myself not being to afford both car payments resulting in the one not drivable obviously to be repossessed & us sued.

2012 Ford Fusion power steering failure almost set off recalled passenger side airbag with young passenger I. front passenger seat. I was making a U-turn doing about 7 mph when I lost power steering and nearly hit the car pulling out from the service station. Loss of power steering could have caused fatality or serious injury to my passenger due to the faulty airbag deployment. I purchased the pre-owned vehicle on 4/19/2019. Lost power steering on 4/20/2019. The vehicle is at the dealer as of today 4/22/2019 for the airbag recall but, delaet is saying Ford may not cover the power steering recall if diagnostic machine doesn't produce certain costs. This is a huge safety issue! loss of power steering + faulty airbag = serious injury or death. Any report of power steering loss should = safety recall.

While driving down the highway last night an alarm went off on my dash reading: "service power steering now" seconds later a second warning dinged explaining to "service advance trac". as well a picture lit up on the dash representing "advancetrac" service. My car started to veer right while I was holding the steering wheel. I tried straightening back to avoid hitting the cars next to me but the steering wheel was way off track, not aligned with my tires. This has never happened before so I am very concerned. Once I was able to get home safely I looked up the issue & theres a recall for some of my exact car models. I checked my tires, reset my battery turned the wheel but no change and my car is still in good condition. The air bag sign is on now & has not went off. I have had another recall failure in the past that started while driving in the middle of traffic. I just hope I dont die during the next system failure.
