Just paid $1658 for the removal and replacement of the rack & pinion in our 2010 Ford Fusion due to an inherent defect of the steering system that occurs around 90,0000 -100,000 miles.
Power steering assist failure notification. When I started my car in my garage, the power steering wouldn't work and I got the above message on the dashboard and an alarm. I turned the engine off and restarted the car, and the power steering went to normal. I did an internet search and found out that this has been a widespread problem, but can't find out if there has been a recall.
Power steering failed. Warning lights service advancetrac, service power steering. Pulling right onto city street, light traffic. Extreme difficulty maneuvering car. Trouble staying in lane.
I continue to get messages indicating that my power steering assist is not working. After conducting some research, it appears I am not the only person that is having this issue with my 2010 Fusion. If I was driving and this system was to fail, it is highly likely that I could have a bad crash because the ability to steer the car is for the most part gone. Evidently this is a major issue that others felt should've been a safety recall as well.

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. While driving 25 mph, the steering wheel seized and the "service power steering now" indicator illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The local dealer confirmed that there were no recalls on the VIN concerning the steering. The manufacturer was notified and confirmed the dealer's information. The failure mileage was approximately 215,000.
Power steering disabled due to part failure. This occurred after starting the engine on multiple occasions. Called Ford shop but they insisted the warning sign had to be on for them to determine the cause. Had to continue to drive not knowing when it would reoccur.

Was driving through a turn on a country road when the power steering quit working resulting in a crash. Damage to passenger side front fender, door, right front wheel and both tires damaged. No injuries, approximate speed at time of incident was 40 mph.
Today, April 20 2017, while on the highway driving my morning commute I had 2 service lights come on.. "service advancetrac" & "service power steering". I had never had these lights pop up so it took me by surprise but figured I would have the car checked over the weekend, I couldn't even do that because no more than 10 minutes later my car went completely stiff on me while I was still on the highway driving at 65mph. It was the scariest feeling and all I could think was that I was so glad I had already dropped my 6 year old off at school because at least if I was in an accident he wouldn't be injured. I am only 5'2" and around 140lbs and it took everything I had to try and turn into my jobs parking lot. Luckily I did make it to work but once I parked I could feel that the steering wheel was not going to budge so I now need to get a tow truck to haul my car and myself back home. I'm at a loss for words for the people of Ford who know this is an ongoing issue, yet have done nothing to right their wrong to their customers.
Electronic power steering assist fault indicated. Electronic power assist steering (epas) not functioning. Epas system fault indicated while driving at 35 mph. Epas quit functioning entirely and steering became difficult without the assist. Accident was barely avoided. Epas will not reset and I was told by a Ford dealership there are currently 8 cars in the U.S. that they cannot diagnose or reprogram. Therefore I have an otherwise good vehicle that is undrivable.
2010 Ford Fusion SE. I lost power steering assist while driving. After pulling over I restarted the car but the issue remained I now only have manual steering. My wife and I stopped by the dealer we were told that Ford does not have any recalls listed for our model.but after researching I see that 2011 and up have been recalled for the electronic assist power steering.
2010 Ford Fusion electronic power assist steering (epas) I was driving my family around town, Saturday, April 8, 2017, when a message came across the dash saying, "service avancetrac". I stopped the car and turned the engine off. 20 minutes later we got back in our car turned it on and the power steering was gone. The warning on the dash now reads, " service power steering now". the vehicle was in motion when the first warning occurred. The vehicle was stationary when the power steering failed altogether. This seems to already be a reported problem for this vehicle and is currently being investigated by the NHTSA. I am thankful this didn't occur at highway speeds or any other scenario that puts my family in harm's way.
Left my sisters home on christmas eve and within.25 mile I received a warning light indicating a steering issue. Within minutes my steering wheel tightened up so tight that my step son had to grab the wheel to help me turn into a gas station. It was extremely frightful because the road we were on was very curvy and it was at night! after few tries we attempted to drive the vehicle home. My son luckily who is a very strong and big 19yr old drove us home while stating the steering felt very tight that he admitted it required great strength to keep control of the car. I have had this car since 2010 and this model has had a full throttle bottle recall (twice) a gas tank line recall, air bag recall (which I'm still waiting for) and the A/C had to be replaced. This car is and has been the worst model of all Fusion. I took this car to the Ford dealership who then examined the car and determined it was the steering gear that has went out on my car and it will be $1795 to replace!! that's half the price of what this car is even worth not to mention I had already paid $1200 to get the A/C fixed over the summer. I searched online to see if others had the same gear issue and behold google shows a class action lawsuit in California about it and over 500 recall complaints yet Ford has not recalled it! seriously? I feel considering the past recalls on this model that this particular issue is a huge safety concern. If my step son had not been with me to assist turning the wheel, I would have no doubt wrecked on this curvy road christmas weekend. Which sadly stranded us because of how Ford carelessly threw this model of the fushion out with so many recalls. They should know with so many recalls they should realize this car was poorly built and shouldn't hold the consumers lives and money responsible. This is the first time I've owned a Ford :(
Steering rack makes a grinding noise and will intermittently lose power steering. Does it parked or while driving. Noise is when turning the steering wheel.
Mostly happens when I start the car from a cold start. The dash display shows "power steering assist fault". then I have manual steering. I shut the car off and then restart the engine and everything is fine. This has happened now about once every 1-2 months. Happens when I start the vehicle from a stationary position
