CarComplaints.com Notes: Ford significantly updated the Fusion for the 2010 model year. We wish they hadn't

Throttle body issues have led to a ton of reports about a sudden deceleration and loss of power while driving. Ford issued a “customer satisfaction program” in March 2014 that, unsurprisingly, has left very few customers satisfied.

2010 is also the year we started seeing complaints about the power steering failing. Throttle and steering failure? Yeah, that’s why this is a clunker.

Request to add VIN # to NHTSA campaign id#: 19V904000. Brake pedal always went down more than normal. In June 2018, had rear brake pads, caliper and rotors replaced. October 2018, had front rotors replaced, March 2020 had rear brake, calipers and rotors replaced again. Mechanic bled the brakes and could not establish hydraulic pressure, but tested and there were no leaks. Mechanic said this vehicle should be on the recall list because there is no reason for the brakes to be replaced this often, the fluid is not getting where it needs to be. Vehicle is currently at the Ford service and they want me to pay for them to bleed the brakes when I just had a mechanic do it. My mechanic called them to explain, but since the VIN # is not on the recall, they are not handling this issue professionally. It is the valves within the hbs hydraulic control unit that is prohibiting the valves from closing properly which is why my mechanic could not pressurize the brake fluid in the system. The pedal goes all the way to the ground; the car was towed to the dealership. Therefore, I respectfully request this VIN# be added to this recall so repairs can be made. They will need to bleed the brakes anyway after replacing the valves in the hcu. This car is not driven every day, and sat in the garage most of the time from 2018 to March 2020. I do have receipts with descriptions of work done. This is a school car and I don't want to risk my child being in an accident because of this. Thank you for your consideration and I would appreciate a timely response.

Intermittently shows brake/advanced traction failure. Brake pedal must be pushed very hard when it is needed. The vehicle has been to the dealer several times but the problem persists. Sometimes the failures are several months apart and usually go away after one or two restarts. Today the problem happened again but I am unable to clear it by restarting the car. The car will now have to go to the dealer once more. I am not blaming the dealer as they have done what they can. Ford has been aware of this problem for a long time. This very dangerous condition should have been re paired by now. Today's problem happened when driving about 20 mph on a city St. In the past it mostly happened when starting the vehicle after it had been parked.

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but the pedal failed without warning. The contact used the parking brake and pull the vehicle off to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The mechanic diagnosed the vehicle with a defective hydraulic control unit. The vehicle was then towed to sunbelt Ford of albany located at (2926 N slappey blvd, albany, ga 31701) where the vehicle was diagnosed failure was confirmed. The contact was then given an estimate for the repair. The contact linked the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 19V904000 (service brakes, hydraulic) however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 121,000.

While driving on I85 in atlanta at highway speeds the vehicles ahead of me will brake suddenly causing me to jam my brakes all the way to the floor. Instead of stopping or slowing the vehicle, it continues to go forward and I almost rear end the car ahead of me. I replaced the master cylinder and all four rotors, brakes and calipers. All to no effect. At slow speeds it will pull to one side during braking or feel as if it is grabbing one side then the other instead of a single smooth pressure. At higher speeds you have to double pump to get the brakes to engage with any firmness. There is a ABS control unit recall on this vehicle 19V904000 but is for plant specific vehicles. This recall needs to be expanded to all 2010 Ford Fusion.im going to pay to have this fixed and hope the recall is expanded. As it is, it sits in my yard because we are too afraid to drive it.

I was driving on the freeway when the brake light came on my dash then began to blink. I started to pull to the side of the freeway when I noticed my brakes were not working, I coasted to a stop and called triple a. the car was towed to a repair shop where I was told there was nothing wrong with the brakes. I drove the car out of the repair shop and when I came to the first stop sign again it felt like I had no brakes. I was only going about 15 mph so I was able to stop the car by pushing extremely hard down on the brake pedal and using the aid of my emergency brake. I returned the car to the repair shop and after 2 days they informed me that the car had a problem that only the dealership can fix. The car needed the brake system software updated because of a glitch resulting in the brake hydraulic control unit to get stuck open or react slowly.

Had the rear brakes replaced at tires plus due to brake fluid leaking. They flushed the brake system and now we are getting an ABS hcu (hydraulic control unit) code and the valves are not closing properly. When I googled this issue, it appears Ford recalled approximately 600,000 vehicles which included the 2010 Ford Fusion, however my vehicle was not included in the recall. This issue is causing the brake pedal to not engage. My son brought the car into a tires plus in duluth, mn due to the issue when he's driving.

My vehicle experianced an ABS event a couple of months while driving on a lightly snow covered road. Since the event the brake pedal requires extra effort to stop the vehicle, ultimately ending with the brake pedal being depressed to the floor board. My vehicle is exhibiting identical symptoms outlined in Ford's recall 19S54, however after speaking with customer service I was informed that my vehicle production date of May 2010 is not included in their recall. Being that this issue affects other 2006-2010 Ford Fusion vehicles I feel that my vehicle should be covered under the above mentioned recall. (19S54) my local mechanic inspected the brake system today and came to the same conclusion, that the issue is likely being caused by a defect within the ABS valve unit.

My 2010 Ford Fusion's brakes suddenly went soft while I was driving in August 2019. Additional brake pedal travel was required to stop the car, so I had to leave large spaces between my car and other cars in order to have enough stopping distance. I brought the car to my local mechanic, who had to flush the brake system and install a new hcu. The repairs cost over $1400. In December 2019, a recall went out for 2010 Ford Fusion for this exact same issue. I contacted Ford to find out if I could get reimbursed for the repairs. Ford informed me that my particular 2010 Ford Fusion is not covered in this recall, because it is only covering Ford Fusion built between February 2009 and July 16, 2009. They said that my Ford was built on July 22, 2009 (6 days after the recall cut-off date), and is therefore not eligible for the recall, even though it had the exact same issue as described in the recall and the mechanic had to make the exact same repair that is prescribed in the recall. NHTSA, I have looked through other customer complains and have found multiple people who have had this same issue, and who have been told by Ford that their car is not covered for the recall because it falls outside that very specific date range. I urge you to expand the date range for this recall. This is an issue that happens suddenly, while the vehicle is in motion, and impairs vehicle stopping distance significantly. It has happened already to many people, not only those who had Ford Fusion built between the specific recall date range, and it will continue to happen unless people are notified of the recall and encouraged to bring their cars in to repair this issue. Malfunctioning brakes can cause serious accidents. Please note the urgency of this issue and work with Ford to expand the recall dates.

From 6/2019 until 1/2020, intermittent and significant brake pedal travel would occur after an ABS event, such as loss of traction due to rough road (e.g. gravel, pot-hole). This would happen while braking at highway speeds or coming to a stop in the city. Braking was severely reduced after event with gradual improvement after pumping the brake pedal. During a snowstorm in 1/2020, frequent ABS events occurred due to loss of traction, and the issue transitioned from being intermittent to constant. Excessive brake pedal travel was constant at all speeds (in park, city, highway) and the issue was diagnosed by dealer as a failure of the ABS hydraulic control unit (hcu). Dealer recommended replacement of hcu and flush of brake fluid with replacement of dot4 fluid at vehicle owner's expense. This issue, with the same repair plan, was found by the vehicle owner to be addressed under a recall for 2006-2010 model year Ford Fusion (19S54); however, the vehicle owner's 2010 Ford Fusion was not included in this recall. From the owner's experience, it is clear that the issue addressed in the recent recall must be expanded to include more vehicles, such as the owner's vehicle

Withing driving less than 5 minutes, the brakes became non-responsive. After several attempts and pressing on the break pedal harder, we were able to get the vehicle to finally come to a stop. We were driving less than 40 mph. We had to depress the brake pedal to the floorboard to get the car to slow down. It was terrifying. Heard there was a recall, but when contacting Ford they just gave me a case number & hasn't reached out to me since even though my issue was recent & the recall was recent. After this horrendous customer service and lack of response, this will be my last Ford. The repairs cost us over almost 2K.

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid. The contact stated while driving at 30 mph, the ABS warning light and brake failure warning light illuminated while attempting to depress the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to (galpin Ford located at 15505 roscoe blvd, North hills, ca 91343) but was not diagnosed due to the cost. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not subjected to NHTSA campaign number: 19V904000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000. Consumer states that failure has occurred on several occasions. On each occassion the ABS warning light and brake failure warning light illuminated. Consumer says that after turning the vehicle off the warning lights go off and then brakes work again.

Fusion

  • 100,000 miles
The vehicle has a soft brake pedal for approximately the last 18 months and further brake travel is required to get the same or similar braking performance, often to the floor. Occasionally, this becomes concerning when coming to a stop light or stop sign as the vehicle does not seem to always slow or stop consistently. Additionally, a problem occurs when the vehicle has been sitting for a few hours, such as overnight or after work. When first applying the brakes, there is almost no braking that happens. This is at slow speeds, 1-5 mph. Example, approximately weekly, when backing out of a parking space the vehicle will continue to roll a few feet (3-5 feet) even when the brake pedal is depressed all the way to the floor. This is at very slow speeds, definitely under 5 mph. At those speeds the vehicle should stop immediately. This has resulted in nearly backing into vehicles. The vehicle was taken a Ford dealer to diagnose the issue. The dealer stated a hydraulic control unit in the braking system was stuck and would need to be replaced. This diagnosis is very similar, if not the same as nhsta campaign 19V904000 and Ford recall 19S54. However, my vehicle is not considered part of that recall due to date of manufacture. Since the problems seem to be the same, please urge Ford to expand the recall to include all affected vehicles for this safety issue.

Was driving out of a parking lot and tried to brake. Suddenly my brake light, ABS light, and service advancetrac lights come on the dash. The pedal goes all the way to the floor and my car is not stopping. To avoid getting T boned I have to pull the emergency brake. Brought the car to get fixed and my ABS/ hcu unit failed. The cost to repair was crazy high. Looked it up and Ford is currently doing a recall for 2006-2010 Ford Fusion for the exact same reason my brakes failed. They are not including hybrids in this recall for some reason. I would highly encourage Ford to include hybrids in the recall as clearly it doesn't matter if it is a hybrid or not. Ford Fusion from 2006-2010 are having this issue and it could have happened to me on the highway. Would have been fatal at that point because with no brakes going 65 mph, not good!
