CarComplaints.com Notes: Ford significantly updated the Fusion for the 2010 model year. We wish they hadn't

Throttle body issues have led to a ton of reports about a sudden deceleration and loss of power while driving. Ford issued a “customer satisfaction program” in March 2014 that, unsurprisingly, has left very few customers satisfied.

2010 is also the year we started seeing complaints about the power steering failing. Throttle and steering failure? Yeah, that’s why this is a clunker.

While backing out of driveway, suddenly all brake related warning lights came on and I lost brake pressure (pedal went to the floor) and I coasted almost to the opposite curb before pressing hard enough to stop. I towed vehicle to the dealer and was told this was an ABS module failure, and that there was currently no recall for this vehicle.

Fusion

2010 Ford Fusion. No issue with brakes until 12/18/20. Parking in snow slush ABS system briefly engaged, since exactly that event the brake pedal sinks to floor under foot pressure, required pumping to get full stop. No issue with master cylinder, fluid level, or brake cylinders, pedal firm with engine off, no leaking in any condition, pedal returns to full up position after release of foot pressure. Symptoms identical to those described in NHTSA campaign id number 19V904000. Has caused 'heart attack' brake pumping to stop without hitting cars in local traffic. Symptoms present at any speed.

After the ABS activates (e.g., on an icy road), the brake pedal then goes almost all the way to the floor on subsequent brake applications. We have been told by the dealer that there was a recall on the ABS hydraulic control unit for valves not closing for 2010 Fusion, but my vehicle was not included in the recall. However, it seems that my vehicle has the same problem. This has happened multiple times.

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the check brake system message displayed with the traction control warning light illuminated. While depressing the brake pedal, the pedal extended to the floorboard and the vehicle would not immediately stop. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the brake module was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. Haley Ford richmond located at 10724 jefferson davis hwy, richmond va 23237 and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 152,000.

Running moving forward brakes went to floor. Replaced all brake pads, brake calipers, front rotors and master cylinder. Engine off it has perfect brake pedal. Running it goes to floor. It is the hydraulic control unit. The car is in excellent shape and has 78,000 miles on it. It does not fall into recall manufacturing date it should.it started in morning after pulling out on street coming to first stop sign.

November 2020 started car in parking lot and drove 30 feet. Dashboard warning lights came on, hit brake which did not work sinking all the way to floor and rolled to stop after 30 feet. Turned engine off. Restarted and again after driving 30 feet dashboard warning lights came on, hit brake and again did not work sinking to floor. Rolled to stop after about 30 feet. Towed to mechanic. Mechanic investigated and needed to replace ABS control module. Mechanic checked for any outstanding recalls and none noted but he felt there should be a safety recall.

While braking at any time the brake pedal falls to the floor and has to be pumped. This happens randomly while driving and has almost caused many accidents for me. Other 2010 Fusion have been recalled why not mine?

Fusion

  • 205,000 miles
While driving and approaching a stop on a turn, I hit a pothole that caused my ABS system to malfunction which resulted in a great reduction in break efficiently and/or loss of breaking completely. In researching probable causes and possible solutions, the situation described is just as described in Ford recall - 19S54. My current model Fusion (a 2010 SE) is not included in the recall, however, the situation is recurring and getting worse.

Fusion

  • 120,000 miles
The braking system near failure that puts drivers and their family at risk that Ford seems to think is no big deal. The car is unsafe to drive and yet the advance notice is all they have done. I was told months back that they would be recalling at the end of the 3rd quarter to address and fix issue. Well here we are nearing the end of the 4th quarter and they now say it will be addressed by the end of 1st quarter of 2021. I have contacted my dealer and they referred me to corporate and then the Corp. Rep had no answers either. I feel brake pedal travel and decreased braking performance is a serious enough issue where pushing back date O recall should not be allowed and Ford needs to make a greater effort to fix. And why has this government Agency pushed for a more comprehensive solution?

The brake are exhibiteing the same issue as NHTSA campaign #19V904000. Rarely, the brake pedal without warning will drop two inches to within 1/2 inch from the floorboard. This started after we had the brakes professionally flushed with the recommended and what the master cylinder cap indicated dot 3. my VIN is not on the NHTSA list, but the problem is identical. Currently in the shop having the completely flushed with dot 4. started about a year and a half ago, but only became aware of the fix yesterday.

The brakes stop working, or at least the power part did. The ABS and other brake-system warning lights lit up on the dashboard. I could get the vehicle to brake only by pushing the pedal as far as it would go. It was similar in feel to a car with no power. I doubt this this would not have been enough to stop me in time had I been going over 30 mph or trying to navigate a curve. I had to turn off the ignition and restart it for it to clear. Something similar what this article describes when it happened I had just backed up and had then pulled forward out of a parking lot onto the street when I realized I could not stop normally https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2010/02/Ford-issues-prompt-fix-for-Fusion-hybrid-brakes/index.htm

  • 160,000 miles
Fusion brakes became very spongy last year called the dealer, took car in they reported "resetting the brake sensor", and brakes were functioning satisfactory. 2 weeks ago, problem returned on a trip of 500 miles, thought brakes were loosing fluid, checked fluid was fine. Pumped brakes in park very hard X 5-10 reps X 3 sets, brake partially returned. Arriving home brakes functioned fair. Now past 2 days unable to reset brakes and they are very spongy, very risky for travel and performing unexpected stopping. Ford service reports some of these vehicles are under recall some are not"? I will redress this with dealer this week. Now steering fault is showing up, looses assist while driving, makes parking and avoidance maneuvering difficult and dangerous. Again some vehicles under recall not mine ?"

I was at a parking lot and was pulling out in reverse when my car was still moving backwards without stopping because the brake pedal went to the floor and I pulled the E-brake. I turned off the engine and turned it back on and the brakes were working again and I went to an empty road and tested my brakes and realized that when I went reverse my brakes weren't working. I tested it again after a couple hours and it worked fine but soon after that it stopped working again. I have been told that it is the hydraulic control unit (hcu).

Pressed on brake pedal to stop for traffic light and alarm chime sounded. The dashlights for ABS system and skid control lit up along with warning to have advance braking system service. Brake pedal went to floor but I was able to stop vehicle in non emergency situation but just barely avoided rear end car in front of me. I was traveling about 20-25mph. Pulled car to side of road and turned off key and then restarted. Dash codes cleared and car operated normally since. I would not have been able to stop vehicle in an emergency situation. NHTSA recall covers this problem for the same Ford model vehicles as mine but my VIN is excluded. Please extend the coverage to my VIN

problem #223

Sep 242020

Fusion

  • 80,000 miles
The vehicle ABS module failed at about 80,000 miles, resulting in delayed and more difficult braking. This could cause the vehicle to not brake properly and has resulted in documented accidents. This problem is related to Ford recall #19S54 and NHTSA campaign id 19V904000. The Ford dealership mechanic said that the problem with the brakes exhibited the same manufacturing defect as the recall, but since the vehicle was manufactured at a slightly later date (< 2 months after the affected-parts end date). Upon contacting Ford, they refused to include the vehicle in the recall because of this. We are alerting NHTSA that more 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid vehicles may be impacted other than the ones captured in the initial recall.
