CarComplaints.com Notes: For the third year in a row, the 3rd generation Focus is experiencing massive transmission problems.

Most notably owners keep complaining about how there's bad hesitation and jerking when starting from a stop. This isn't the result of an old, worn out part. In fact, the average mileage it's reported to us is just over 15k miles.

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Focus. While driving 60 mph, the vehicle began to lose power and the check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer (crouse Ford, 11 antrim blvd, taneytown, md 21787) where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump failed and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the local dealer, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and closed out the case. The failure mileage was approximately 35,000.

Noticed fuel gauge inaccurate, miles to empty inaccurate, engine cutting out while coasting to stop, feeling gas pedal unresponsive or suddenly fueling engine unexpectedly. Learned from vehicle inspection at dealership service dept. That fuel tank is "delaminated" and deformed, and tank, valve and fuel pump all need replacing. Cost: $1500. Not considerered under warranty even though, according to them, this is a manufacturing flaw described by a tsb years ago.

While driving down the road at 30 mph my vehicle stalled and lost complete power. I was nearly involved in an accident, but fortunately the alert drivers around me were able to brake in time. A friendly samaritan helped to push my vehicle to the side of the road. Thankfully I was physically okay, but emotionally not so much. I purchased a brand new 2014 Ford Focus off of the lot and have since had nothing but issues. I'm still paying on the vehicle today and now it is not in use unless I can come up with $2,500 to repair the entire fuel system. This system should not have failed at only 67,000 miles. There is an issued recall on similar Ford vehicles manufactured from 2013-2015 which is the same time frame in which my vehicle was manufactured. After repeated attempts to come to a resolution through Ford customer service, they won't even offer information on the type of fuel system used on the vehicles with the recall because they don't want to be liable for this defect. I'm out of a vehicle at 67,000 miles and have no consumer protection. It's scary to read about the 100's of people who experienced the exact same fuel system malfunction at similar mileage. This is a serious safety issue that Ford needs to address immediately. In addition, since I have had the vehicle the transmission has been jerky and I can't even accelerate onto a highway. Ford had vehemently denied that it was anything wrong with the manufacturer transmission and yet since they have issued a recall on the transmission, but now tell me I'm too far past my warranty(which was only 7,000 miles ago) I'm heartbroken because I don't have the money to repair this sort of system, especially knowing it is a defect on their part.

Vehicle stalled while traveling 30 mph, same fuel system that is under recall on Ford vehicles manufactured through 2013-2015. It is obviously the same exact issue. I nearly lost my life driving a 3 year old car that I'm still paying on. The fuel system completely failed while the vehicle was in motion. I had just scheduled service on the vehicle earlier that morning because it was not reading the fuel level correctly and stalling when I filled the tank up. The Ford dealership wants to charge me $2,500 to have it replaced when they know that the system is defective because of the manufacturer part.

When filling with car at gas station the auto pump shut off does not function spewing fuel all over. This has happened multiple times at different gas stations. Fuel gauges on car are not accurate. Took car to Ford there is a tsb 15-0034 for this issue. The fuel tank was distorted/deformed causing the fuel pump to malfunction overflowing into the evap canister. This is a dangerous situation and is a fire hazard when filling the car with gas. This issue should be a recall due to fire and safety hazards.

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Focus. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle shuttered and stalled. The contact also stated that the fuel gauge failed to work without warning and the vehicle ran out of fuel. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and called roadside assistance for more fuel. The contact restarted the engine and the vehicle returned to normal. The failure recurred twice. The local dealer (North brothers Ford located at 33300 Ford rd, westland, mi 48185 (800) 586-4203) stated that the contact had to pay to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted at 800-392-3673 and stated that the VIN was not included in a recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 69,900.

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Focus. While driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled and lost power without warning. The contact was able to restart the vehicle, but the check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to a dealer again where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump control module failed. The failure caused a lean condition in the engine and caused the oxygen sensor to fail. In addition, the fuel pump control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred while at the dealer. However, during this incident, the vehicle idled at very high rpms and an overheating warning indicator illuminated, which warned the contact to pull over. The vehicle was taken to a dealer once again and the mechanic stated that there was a chafed wire. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and stated that they would take the contact's information and file a complaint with NHTSA. The approximate failure mileage was 69,000.

Transmission: The vehicle has been stuttering and then unexpectedly jumping forward when pressing the accelerator since about 1,500 miles. It's been getting continuously worse since. The first incident that truly endangered my safety was when I was pulling out from a 3-way stop, it almost stalled in front of incoming traffic, then suddenly propelled forward into a gas station curb & blew out my tire. The second incident, which is why I'm filing this report, was with my 2 daughters in the car, leaving a stop light at a highway intersection. It was raining, and I was trying to get up to the 55mph speed limit but the car kept chugging and stuttering. Other vehicles were going around me as my speed slowly climbed, & at almost 50 mph the car suddenly accelerated and, despite tapping my brakes, continued to do so until it hit 65 mph. I was surrounded by other vehicles, and pressed the brake harder to avoid hitting the line of cars in front of me, to the left of me, or having to swerve into the ditch on my right at this high rate of speed, because tapping the brakes cautiously was having effect on the cars acceleration. When it stopped quickly accelerating, it continued to stutter, but seemed to level off at my chosen speed. Since then, its continued to stutter and chug and jump forward almost every time I accelerate, whether from a complete stop or to go faster than my current speed. It's terrifying.

While accelerating, vehicle frequently stalls and/or hesitates to continue acceleration creating a jerking affect until it can actually catch again or provide fuel to accelerate. This typically occurs when pressing on the pedal both when stopped/start or if in motion and accelerate to go onto the highway. This happens frequently while driving on a daily basis.

I purchased this Focus in September of 2013. Little did I realize that this was probably one of the worst mistakes I made in my life thus far. I didn't even have the car 3 months before the transmission issue started happening. I don't drive erratic or aggressive I have taken the car to the dealership 12 times for the same issue since I have bought it, to the point that I have made friends with some of the guys there. The clutch has been replaced 4 times and the module has been reprogrammed and everything that Ford claims will "fix" the issue. It has not been fixed, the most recent time I took the car to fix it I couldn't accelerate onto the highway because the gears wouldn't grab after second, then the car stalled and the engine shut off, so I had to nurse the car to the side of the road and restart it and I finally made it to the dealership. I called Ford, and the bad thing is, is that they know that this problem exists they just don't want to do anything because they know that they will lose money. I finally spoke to a rep at Ford that directed me towards the BBB because she found out that I was in the military, saying that the military members shouldn't have to deal with things like this because we do so much for the country. I have contacted the BBB and they finally said that they will have a resolution within 14 days from yesterday. And what is really alarming is that the only reason I found out about the BBB option is because of my military service. It is ridiculous because I know this issue is nationwide and Ford wants nothing to do with it. It is sad to say like with the issue that Toyota had with their cars is that someone has to die and sue Ford before this issue will get resolved, unless you want to take direct action against Ford.
