CarComplaints.com Notes: You should probably steer clear of the 2012 Focus. Otherwise, you might not be able to steer at all.
The 2012 is the first Focus to offer Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS). It's also the first year with massive power steering failure. These things are not mutually exclusive.
This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 16V643000(latches/locks/linkages); however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer confirmed that the parts were not available for the recall remedy. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
On 10/23/2015 at 51,289 miles, I took the car in because the car intermitterly would not start & when taking off from 1st to 2nd gear, it was jerky. I would have to let off the gas. I also experienced a rubbing & scraping sound that I found out is what they said was the transmission clutch shuddering. The clutch & tcm (transmission control module) were replaced under the Ford technical service bulletins tsb15-0120 & tsb-15-0121. On 10/12/2016 at 71,906 miles, I took the car back into the same local Ford dealer for shuddering again. They replaced the clutch again & reprogrammed the PCM/tcm & preformed an adaptive learn procedure. I still experience a grinding sound mainly while turning, but have been assured that it is normal & not an issue. My most recent issue is my airbag light came on stationary (no flashing). I currently have less than 80,000 mile on the car. I took it into my local Ford dealer & the car gave code dtc B00C2-11-ocsm (right front seatbelt retractor assembly shorted). It will cost over $700 to replace!!! I was told if I am in an accident where the airbags need to deploy, they will not deploy......none of them! less important problems I've experienced is the manual lumbar in the driver seat broke & the "beauty ring" around the headlight switch cracked. Ford does not sell just that piece. You have to buy the whole cover that also goes around the air vent right above it even though they are separate pieces clipped together, which is $45.
My son got into an accident with his 2012 Ford Focus hatchback and his airbags did not deploy none whatsoever he ended up with bruise shoulders his friend with a scraped knee his car a total loss but none of his airbags deployed.
The contact owned a 2012 Ford Focus. While driving at an undetermined speed, the driver lost control and crashed the vehicle. There was significant damage to the exterior and subframe. The air bags did not deploy. The driver sustained head, neck, and back injuries. The front passenger sustained a bruised neck, and the rear passenger side occupant sustained a fractured right femur. Medical attention was received. The vehicle was destroyed and towed. A police report was filed. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The VIN was invalid. The failure mileage was 51,000.
I was in an accident yesterday where I rear ended a vehicle and it did significant damage to my car and the car in front of me and my airbags did not deploy. I hit my chest on the steering wheel becaue of the impact
The contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle jerked, stalled, and the air bags inadvertently deployed without impact. The contact sustained head injuries that required medical attention. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 61,000.
I was involved in an accident in February 2016 and my crash bar broke off and the airbag sensors broke off, so the airbags did not deploy on impact. The other car swerved to miss hitting my drivers side door and so I T-boned him and the airbags did not deploy. I was in the process of trying to turn to miss him.
I have a 2012 Ford Focus SE the occupant classification sensor when out I feel that Ford needs to look into this problem and I don't feel safe in it because when the dash light comes on it disables the whole system
An alert comes up on the dash board claiming that steering assist fault service required. It is very difficult to drive although the faster I go the easier it is to steer' bit turns remain difficult this started happening in 2015, powering off the car would temporarily fix it. The issue was intermittent but is now very consistent and happening every time I drive the car.
Dashboard light indicates problem with passenger side airbag. Company diagnostic indicates that a faulty sensor in seat buckle will prevent passenger side air bag from deploying upon impact. Car blogs indicate this has been a safety concern in Ford cars since 2003, yet Ford refuses to address this life-threatening defect.
My daughter was involved in a head on collision. The airbag deployed but split open and she said it looked like smoke came out of it. Also the seat belt did not lock on impact. She sustained minor injuries to her right arm and abdomen hips and back. The vehicle was in motion going 45 mph the other car was going 70 mph and it was on a city street.
I was having issues with the electrical problem the horn went out for a period of time also the radio is not workingas well as the airbags did not deploy when I was recently in a vehicle accident I am lucky to be alive.I was making a left hand turn onto a road and was hit from the side the impact was enough to make my engine dismount but my airbags did not deploy.
The car has more than three major recalls.and Ford don't have the parts for repairs.. airbags, electronic clutch. And some other problems with no part S coming in!!!!! car has not been repaired.L have taken it in four time and told the parts are just coming in.temp repairs I am so so very tried of this! I have been a ower of 4 new Ford cars. And a customer for Ford & GMC not again.
I was driving to work at 0700. I went into a curve and the road was wet.I was going 57 mph in a 55 mph zone. I braked to late. I sled off the road and went airborne. From where I went airborne and to where I landed I went 293 ft. (per state trooper) they say I'm lucky to be alive. I flipped multiple times. There is damage all over the car. Looking at the damage and how I went head first into the hillside causing the flip my airbags did not deploy. I hit a tree while I was in the air. My side airbags did not deploy either. I want to upload a picture but I see I'm unable to.
I rear ended someone yesterday, going 25mph. The person in front of me stopped and I was trying to find directions and did not see them stop. The front of the car is severely damaged, and I have whiplash pretty bad, but the air bags did not deploy.
My daughter was driving the Focus in menomenee wi, where she is in her masters program at stout university. She was heading South and the young man in the other vehicle was heading North, he turned left in front of her smashing her vehicle. His air bags went off ours did not. He was found to be at fault and a ticket was issued. I called Ford about the air bags not deploying and they said they would look at it if I brought it in. I explained to him it wasn't drivable so he said I would have to pay myself to bring it in and have it looked at but I should be happy my daughter was not hurt more seriously. But I'm very concerned that not 1 of her air bags went off and they were not the least worried about it. The claims adjuster looked at the car and he said they should absolutely have deployed but nothing in the Focus, but his went off and the Focus was completely totaled in the accident but not his car.
