CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2016 Edge is starting to show a similar trend to the prior model year of the engine stalling while driving, which owners report is typically caused by low-mileage problems with the throttle body. This is typically considered a safety defect.

2.0L ecoboost, 40,000 miles, fwd, engine tries to stall when coming to stop at traffic light, rough idle, makes groaning or thrumming sound similar to helicopter. No power when using accelerator, engine off then on clears issue. Read P2196 code, cleaned maf sensor, but stalling returned. Random, not regular failure, so not able to recreate on demand. No fault code logged most recent incident. Has occurred 4 times over last month
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while the vehicle was on, there was white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe. The vehicle was taken to the dealer Ford of murfreesboro (1550 nw broad St, murfreesboro, tn 37129 (615) 713-1436) where it was diagnosed that the engine block was fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but no further assistance was taken. The failure mileage was approximately 72,680.
While driving the vehicle on the interstate, three different times it suddenly, without warning, lost all power and shutdown the car. No power, lights, power steering, etc. I had to coast to a stop on a major interstate. Once I was stopped, turned off the car and it restarted like nothing happened. These events were very dangerous. Once was when it was raining so when the car lost power, the wipers stopped at 70 mph so I had to navigate to the shoulder without being able to see. A second time was at night driving 70 mph, when it shutdown, I lost headlights and I couldn't see. It was terrifying as I was in a remote area of I-49 without any lighting to navigate to the shoulder. Again, once stopped and put in park, it restarted immediately. Please note, I'm not the owner of this car. I was driving it as a loaner from a used car dealership. This problem was so serious I am reporting directly to the NHTSA as this car had no recalls to address. Someone is going to get injuries or die. I was terrified.
My check engine light read 'crank case pressure sensor' and while I was driving the 'add coolant' light came on and before I got to the next town, the warning light came on notifying me that the engine was going to switch into the engine saving mode being that it needed more coolant emergently. I used nearly a gallon of coolant the next couple of days and brought the vehicle to a Ford dealership" for diagnosing and servicing. They said I had a cracked block due to the fact that the water pump is located inside the engine instead of outside of the engine on these vehicles which has been raising havoc in a lot of these engines because it doesn't make the proper seal causing a leak to occur and the material they use for their water pump is very thin and often times causes a leak from the coolant that goes directly into the engine which it did in my situation and cause the engine to crack. If I had been driving down the road when this would've happened it would've been detrimental to myself, my passengers and other people on the road at that time!
Have a 2016 Ford Edge at about 64,00 miles my check engine light kept coming on and off, car was also sputtering when I started it and sounds like it will stall. I keep having to refill coolant. Took it to 3 different dealers who all said a code of P0302 they all told me it was a manufacture defect of the coolant part not being flush on the engine. I filed a complaint through Ford who has done nothing for me because I'm out of the manufacturing warranty. The service manager informed me several cars all having the same issue but under mileage for warranty. Car isn't even paid off and feel like I was sold a lemon, now I need a new engine and can't afford one! wish Ford would take better care of their customers!!! my engine could blow!!!!!I can't even get my car serviced until December 30th because dealership has so many cars with the same problem. I have contacted a lemon law lawyer in the hopes they can do something for me.

My car has started to shake very badly, at lights, stop, start, all times. Coolant is leaking into the cylinder head causing it to misfire constantly and causing the shakes. This was repaired once already in 2017, but the repair has failed and is happening again. Ford says I need a new engine but I'm outside my warranty and they are not willing to cover the full repair. They have a tsb 19-2208 that has been updated in June of 2019 to change the repair for cylinder replacement to engine replacement. This issue can cause the car to overhead and stall if not caught right away.
When driving my 2016 Ford Edge on the street or on the highway the car hesitates 2 take off I have to press on the gas really hard before it starts to take off it shakes really bad and when you first start the car it's shaking and jerking when you put the car in drive it hesitates to move with this heart jerking motion and shaking then idles down and then the car will move but it still takes some force on the gas pedal for the car to move also I noticed a burning smell like oil or something and a very thick white smoke clouding out of the exhaust pipes this problem started 3 weeks ago as of today August 28th my Ford Edge will not turn over I've tried replacing the alternator the spark plugs ignition switch it will not turn over the car has been sitting in my driveway since last Friday the check engine light a picture of a ranch and and a picture of a triangle with a caution sign in the middle has came on and then the car will no longer start
Internal leak from oil valve/switch allowed fumes to leak into the car for months and months and exposed the driver to toxins; blood work revealed high levels of mtbs; symptoms include extreme exhaustion, vision and cognitive problems, balance issues itchy skin, and more. First, the fumes should never leak into the car, second, the Ford service department said it was ok to drive while they ordered a part, and it was not ok to drive because it was poisoning the driver. The car has now been fixed, the driver's recovery is ongoing.
Since purchased as a certified pre owned, there is always a very noticeable clicking noise from the engine when cold, and gradually quiets when warmed up... similar to a sticking valve lifter. The servicing dealer checked with Ford and said the engineers are working on the issue, but there are no repairs for this condition and it will not harm the engine.
Ford Edge sel 2016 VIN * [xxx] 22,500 miles since I acquired it (he, she) has a problem of when I am traveling a highway and the speed comes to 60 mph the engine is in discharge revolutionize raising a hill an evil enters(approaches) smell of gases of the interior of the car, I have to reduce the speed and open crystals of the car in order that the smell goes out and could be breathed well. I it have taken in 3 occasions two workshops authorized by Ford for guarantee and they cannot find anything, they me inform that the computer does not reflect anything. The last occasion I asked them to realize a test(proof) of road with a scanner and they refused. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. While operating the vehicle, the temperature gauge increased to "hot" and the "coolant overheated" message displayed. The vehicle was taken to park city Ford (3333 inwood rd, dallas, tx) where it was diagnosed that an electrical voltage surge had damaged the battery, wire harness, fuse box, and cooling fan. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 37,000.
Car stalls out and loses power and symptoms have the potential to be fatal. This usually happens under acceleration and has almost caused 2 rear-end accidents. As I accelerate the car thumps when the engine stalls and then the car loses all acceleration. This sudden loss of power is especially dangerous when happening on the highway or ramp getting up to the highway. These are the two places it consistently happens. The car has been taken to the dealership to be serviced 5 times for the same issue without resolution. I won't let my family drive the car for fear of injury to her. I'm paying for a defective product. I do not feel safe in this vehicle and I don't get the sense that Ford is trying to fix the root issue.
Engine shut down while driving with no warning. Vehicle entered "accessory mode" which kept all of the instruments light up, was able to steer off the road and re-start the car. Vehicle was in motion on a city street with heavy traffic.
Car driving at 55-70 mph straight line down highway and suddenly dies. Car still has accessory power, hit hazard lights and tried to coast to side of road without getting hit. Upon stopping car will immediately restart. Yellow wrench lights up on dash.
Driving down the interstate at 80 mph in motion when the car started to go into 'limp mode.' The dash stated there was 'low oil pressure' and 'check airbags.' Within the next three seconds the car started to lose power and power steering was shut off. The car started slowing down at a dramatic rate leaving me stranded. After the car killed the engine I was not able to restart the car. The car would turn over, but not hold power it would die immediately. I was finally able to start the car after waiting 10 minutes. The car would start and hold power. The check engine light and airbag light were on. I was only able to drive a mile before the problem would start all over again. This has happened to me on multiple occasions averaging about every 2,000 miles. It has happened in blizzard conditions, rain, and on a 50 degree day. Also while driving 35 mph and on a highway got 55 mph. I have taken the car into Ford and they told me there is nothing wring with the car. When plugging the car into the system to look for the problem they stated nothing shows up, even with the check engine light on.
I bought a 2016 Edge sport in January and have had to take to the shop for the oil pan leaked 2 times in a month steering warning light came on for 1hr head liner had to be replaced brake lights filled with water, bumper had to be replaced because of a hole from factory. I asked for another car they said no I asked for my money back and they said no so I have a car with 11000 miles that's in the shop every month and nothing I can do about
2016 Ford Edge titanium approx. Mileage 7600 date: Friday September 8, 2017 time: Approximately 12:45 P.M. location: Southbound on waukegan road/us highway 41 near intersection with casimir pulaski drive (lighted intersection), waukegan Illinois driving southbound in left lane on highway 41 at about 40 mph. Right lane closed for construction work. Weather clear and dry. Roadway flat and straight. Sudden lack of acceleration even with increased pressure on gas pedal. Dash service light (orange warning) 'hill assist not available' with wrench. Also noticed airbag light was lit. Hit brake pedal to light up the warning lights for traffic behind me and also turned on the hazard flashers. Car engine continued to run but the car would not go above about 1 mph. Since right lane and shoulder were not accessible, I turned left at pulaski drive to get onto a slower-moving, less-trafficked roadway and pulled to the shoulder. Car was barely moving. Turned off the ignition and waited approximately 20-30 seconds. Turned the car back on and no error messages were displayed. Tested forward and reverse gears while on the shoulder and felt normal acceleration. Made a U-turn back onto pulaski drive, turned left onto highway 41/waukegan road and drove home. Service on 9/12/17 ' only error code was B1111 described by tech as 'ABS parking brake', code cleared by tech. Service on 9/19/17 ' complete diagnostics run ' no error codes. No resolution.
Driving down a straight road at 50 mph on highway 41 and the check engine light / wrench icon came on at the same time I had lost all power to engine. Had to coast to side of road the car would not go any faster than 5 mph. After stopping I turned off engine and restarted it and it would not idle under 2500 rpms. Stop engine again it seemed to be ok then but still could not drive any faster than 5 mph. I ended up calling a tow truck. I thought at the time that something was wrong with the throttle body of the engine. 1 year old Ford with 6,287 miles and had just been in the shop for an oil change 2 weeks earlier. No recall on it was listed per dealership. If I was in very heavy traffic or rain it could of been really bad really fast. The tow company towed it to the local Ford dealership and they did say it was the throttle body and they would fix it under warranty. I thought Ford had fixed already. Anyway pickup car on Wednesday 5.31. Hope it it fixed now...
Purchased vehicle in Nov of 2016. In Feb of 2017 I received a message on dashboard that my oil pressure was low. After checking oil we discovered it was 3 quarts low. Though maybe it was not filled all the way by the dealer. On March 27th we brought the vehicle into the dealership because again the oil was 3 qts low. On March 28th the dealer called to say that they had a memo from Ford stating something was wrong with the engine and that they would have to replace the entire engine! (now that's scarry) also received in the mail that there is a compliance recall call 17C02 for airbags. In specific the drivers airbag. Parts for this recall will not be available until late second quarter 2017. I feel this vehicle is a disaster, not safe, afraid to drive and that Ford should just give me a new one!! very disappointed with Ford. We are Ford car buyers and have been for at least 20 yrs.
