CarComplaints.com Notes: A frustrating electrical issue is causing an ever-present “door ajar” warning light for 2011-2013 Ford Edge owners. Even with the doors latched shut, faulty sensors convince the vehicle’s computer they aren’t. With no way to override the system, owners have no choice but to stare at the warning light, listen to the warning chimes when the car is stopped, and deal with interior lights that won’t shut off.

This is a very annoying problem that Ford should have fixed. It happens too often to count, like almost every time I drive the car. If I reported this every time it happens, I would be sitting in front of this computer forever.

The door ajar light remains on. I have to continue to slam the door until the sensor connects and turns off the door ajar signal. Otherwise, the lights remain on in my car for quite a long time. This is wearing down my battery and is very irritating. I checked to see if there was a recall and was shocked to see that it was not. I REFUSE to pay to get this fixed. It should be on the recall list. Apparently, from the complaints here, it's not an isolated incident. Something needs to be done.

The door latch doesn't work and recognize that the door is closed when it actually is. With this happening it often sets off the alarm.

Active duty military came out of the field and my wife said the door light was staying on. (not exactly what you want to hear after being away for 3 months training) I took the car into a local dealership the mechanic told me to try spraying wd-40 in the latch and if that doesn't work it needs to be replaced. It helped for a while, but now its just on constantly and its more of an annoyance because I can't lock doors while driving or get the dome light to turn off when backing up. Its very annoying at night because I can't see for sure if I'm clear to back out safely. I intend to get it fixed when I get the time to do it, but as I was researching how difficult it was I seen that it was a common issue among 2011 Edge owners.

This is the 2nd time in 3 years that I have had to take my car back to the dealer to fix this same issue. The driver door ajar light stays on even if the door is closed. I'm ripping my should off trying to slam the door over and over in order to get the light to go off. The car will not lock and the lights stay on as long as the car "thinks" the driver door is still open. The light is also distracting if I just keep driving with it on. Ford needs to recall this door latch because it seems to be an ongoing problem with a lot of people who drive a Ford Edge.

Edge SE FWD 4 Li V6

  • Automatic transmission

This is a very well known problem to which the dealer will only lubricate the latch as per service order. Hence, extended warranty will not cover actually fixing the issue by replacing the defective switch. Backing up at night is a nightmare since the inside dome light cannot be darkened until moving forward at 10+ Mph and you can not see your surroundings to watch for objects or people. Not to mention the drain on the batteries when the inside dome light decides to stay on instead of turning off as it sits idle. Just crazy that Ford will not acknowledge or take responsibility for the defect.

Seems like this is an EXTREMELY COMMON problem with Ford EDGE's. HEY FORD STEP UP AND FIX YOUR SCREWUP!!! All You have to do is do some digging and see that this happens JUST AS THE CAR GOES OUT OF WARRANTY.

Update from Dec 7, 2016: Repaired at my expense. Approx $225

Two years in row I had to have the door latch replaced because it causes the door sensor light to stay on. When I shut the 2011 Ford Edge off and get out of the car the interior lights stay on for a good 15 minutes, which makes me worry about getting a dead battery. I think it's bull that Ford is making me pay for a problem that has happened two years in a row.

Edge Limited V6

Door ajar light NEVER goes off. Reporting it a second time, as suggested, to indicate that it is recurring. EVERY SINGLE TIME we get in the car it is on, and it NEVER GOES OFF. This has been happening for over a month. Yes, we have tried to fix the problem, but nothing has worked. It irritates me to think of taking it to the dealer and paying to have them fix the problem, when it is obviously a MANUFACTURING ISSUE AND SHOULD BE FIXED BY FORD.

We love our 2011 Ford Edge as our family vehicle. Unfortunately Ill never get another unless ford does a recall on these door ajar sensors. It makes my family very scared to drive places that we don't know without being able to lock our doors. It also makes us very scared we could be in a accident and our doors come flying open.

Edge Limited 3.2V6

  • Automatic transmission

Door ajar light stays on AND the car does not lock properly AND interior lights stay on. This caused my battery to die, (admittedly the battery was old, but this condition drained the battery). Personal safety issue.

This is the second time it has happened, first time was 18 months earlier. First time the Ford dealership charged me $350.00 2nd time they would not warranty work so I took it to a AAA mechanic who charged me $280. I called Ford customer service and was told, "sorry, but nothing they could do". I wrote a letter to Ford corporate office and they replied that they stood by their first response. My complaint is that this is a known problem in many Fords, an engineering flaw if you would, yet Ford feels this is the consumers problem that should be paid for by owners wallet. I am very disappointed in Ford with their response to this issues. That said, this has been only problem I have experienced with this car.

Edge SEL V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 42,700 miles

Bad issue on this Edge at only 3 yrs old, 42,500 miles. Safety concern as the sensor in the door latch says the door is not closed ... but it is. Then last night in the garage I noticed the interior lights of the car remained on with all else off! Would have run the battery down if I had not noticed. Ford needs to fix with no charge parts / labor to Edge owners ... door latch repairs after short time in service? Big $$$$ to get dealer replacement of the door latch assembly! When do the other door latches decide to break! SCARY !!

Edge Unlimited 6 cyl

I read all the posts about this problem and I was pretty much resigned on the fact I would need to spend the $350-$500 to fix it. Or trade the vehicle in towards something else at my local Ford Dealer. I saw that someone had success with spraying the latch with wd-40.

I tried it and worked the lock open and close a few times and sprayed it again. As of now it seems to have fixed the problem. I will update if it stops.

I like the vehicle and bought it certified and otherwise it has met and exceeded expectations.

Edge SE 3.5L

Bought the car used and the problem showed up a couple months later when the weather turned cold. It happens about 75% of the time now and is REALLY annoying. It is especially annoying when it is dark out and the interior lights stay on when you start to drive. It takes a minute for them to go out. Also, when you park it the lights stay on for about 5 to 10 minutes. It looks like you have to take the whole door apart to fix it.

Edge SEL V6

We started having problems with the sync system shortly after the 1st upgrade was completed by the dealer ship. We have had this vehicle in the service department several times for sync issues.

Drivers side door ajar light comes on affecting the locking system and interior lights. This is a major issue. While driving your vehicle you can not lock the door at all. We had our vehicle serviced by the dealership and they say the front door latch/switch assembly bad. The warranty just ran out at 36000 miles. Our vehicle only has 41000 miles on it. The cost for this replacement part is 341.00! There should be a recall on this problem since there have been many others with the same issue. I am not happy with this at all.
