I as well as many of you HATE THIS CAR - I traded a GMC Yukon and have done nothing but regret it since....BUT, good news!! The unrelenting issue with the car randomly not starting has been "fixed" after reading here. I was stuck AGAIN and about to be towed AGAIN. I had tried everything short of taking a baseball bat to the car....and I read here someone said that the issue was that the car wasn't in park (at least the car didn't think it was) and low and behold I "jiggled" the gearshift and IT CRANKED RIGHT UP!!! So, if that's your problem, try it, it saved me 100's of dollars today.

We got this vehicle from a dealership as new vehicle in Aug 2008. Problem started this year (2011). The vehicle won't start all of a sudden. Many times at my work place (5to 6) times. Then again 3 times in shopping complex car park. few times in my home Garage. 3 times I had to call for tow. CAA came in after a touch of a key it started again. I also stared the vetches after few hrs or sometimes the next day. Three weeks ago I went to the dealership where ever I go for my service. They checked and they told me that I have some key and electronic issue; I have to talk to my original dealer which has been closed already forever. Now the van is at home parked. Never started since last Tuesday 15/11/11. I was trying every day.. few times. Never succeeded to start. What a pain. No alternative vehicle to get back to work. What a rip off. I got stuck here. I am trying to organize my paperwork to write to the company. If the company won’t give me a solution.. I will never trust the Chrysler dodge. I will spread the words around intensively. How I can be patient after paying over $21000. Any suggestions!

The car sometimes won't start, either at ignition or remote start. Had it in to dealer, numerous times, but no permanent fix. Dealer is very nice, has tried many fixes, but problem still persists, This seems to be a fairly common one, for 2009's with automatic transmissions. I do not understand why there is not a service bulletin out on it from Chrysler.

I bought my 2009 dodge journey in September of 09 brand new 6months later I had my first problem with it not starting, had to jump it to get it to start. Didn't have a problem with it for 3-6 months and every couple months it would just not want to start up until this week which its happened to me 3times already. I called the dealership, there is no recall out on it but there is a TSB (technical Service Bulleton) out on it. The part to get it fixed is only like $15 thank god. If anyone else is having the same problem call your dealership and give them the TSB # 08-027-10 and they can explain it to you its with the starter and getting moisture in it.

A week ago my 2009 dodge journey would not start after turning the key over several times it started. Another few days go by again will not start. Tried both keys and neither would start it, nor would it start with the electric start on my key. Took it for service they replaced the sensor. Five days later it wont start again tied it several times 3 hour later it starts. Service said they cannot do anything for me that they do not know what the problem is, but dodge journeys are doing this everywhere. They said they believe it is all the wireless devices in my car my iphone, my gps, my ipod, etc. I have been using wireless devices since I bought the vehicle in April 2009 and this is September 2011 and my vehicle just now hates my wireless devices. So when I get stranded after I go to the grocery and my car wont start and my food ruins who am I sending the bill too and also when I get ready to come to work and my car wont start who is paying me for missing a day of work???

We had an issue with our Journey not starting. All of the dash lights would come on but it wouldn't turn over. The dealership started by re-programming the key fob and then replaced the starter. Both had no affect on the problem and the car continued to not turn over at the most inconvenient time. The day before leaving on vacation, it happened again. The dealership provided us with a rental and they kept the car to try and figure out the problem. I had provided them with a list of complaints listed here which helped them to narrow down the issue. It turns out that it was the sensor that tells the car that it's in park that wasn't working. Although the car is in park, the sensor wasn't sending the right message and was preventing it from starting. It took a month before we got the car back but we've been running it now for nearly two months and not one instance has occurred. If you are experiencing this issue, have the dealership replace this sensor. It worked for me.

Never again will I buy a Dodge vehicle! My 2009 Journey has been nothing but problems since the day I pulled it off the lot. I had a bad tire on the car that had to be replaced, then the recall on the safety harness that had to be fixed and then the recall on the brakes happened after I had already replaced them way too soon and now this problem of my car not starting. I had the battery replaced because I was told that it was a battery problem and as soon as they tried to pull the car out of the bay at the shop it died and the had to try and start it three times before it started. This car left me stranded with five kids at the grocery store yesterday and I am not happy at all! I cannot wait to get rid of this HOOPTY! Basically, everyone has had to guess at what the problem is and yet it is still not fixed!!! This is ridiculous and has left a bad taste in my mouth for sure, something needs to be done and the problem needs to be fixed! Shame on you Chrysler!!! You have lost my business for sure this time. I hope you are happy because you have yet another dissatisfied customer. I will be glad to spread the word on to other potential buyers. BEWARE

I have never felt the need to share an opinion on a product before but I have never owned a car I hate as much as I hate our 2009 Dodge Journey. It was purchased in August of 2010. Sometime in May of 2011 it started to exhibit the problems reported by other owners. Most often the car will inexplicably not start then hours later it does start. The battery has been replaced. It has worked fine for the last month and a half since we took it to Pep Boys but today my wife got stranded at the daycare. We were able to start it right up with jumper cables. We have used them in the past. The car is totally unreliable. Do not purchase this vehicle. You never know when or where its going to decide to not start. Nobody seems to know what the actual issue is so there is no fix. My wife really wanted this car but now really wished she never had heard of it. Who puts the battery below the engine anyway? What a stupid idea. Stay away, wish we had.

This is an ongoing problem with this car, Dealer has a "too bad so sad" attitude can't fix what we cannot see. I can see where they are coming from.......but would you not think after going on 3yrs Chrysler, the dealer would have come up with a solution to this problem.....I am not the only owner of a Journey with this problem. Warranty in approx. 30 days and I just feel that I am going to get stuck paying to have this problem repaired when a solution is found. If anyone has heard that there is a fix out there PLEASE let me know.

As many other 2009 Dodge Journey Owners, My car as well randomly will NOT turn over. You hear one click, the lights and dash dim but just one click sound. most of the time when it happens, after 2 tries or so it will start. However, twice now I have been left stranded over night because it will not restart until after 8-10 hours on the first try. I have taken it to 2 different Dodge Dealers and they have no clue. I have called Chysler, no clue. yet forum after forum I see many Journey owners with the exact same issue.

THERE IS HOPE-----READ ON----

Chrysler gave me the hot line for NHTSA who handles investigations to start a recall. The more of us who call and open a case, the better chances we get a recall to fix this issue. PLEASE CALL 1-888-327-4236 and they will open an investigation as well. Please do this it will only help!

For the last 9 months I have been going back and forth to the dealership for the no start issue. I had the starter changed, next was the WIN module. I just took it back again today because it is still not wanting to start randomly. I just emailed a class action attorney to form a class action lawsuit against Chrysler. I found out from 2 different dealerships that Chrysler knows all about this issue and they emailed a letter to the dealerships letting them know it is a no fix and it is basically up to the service techs at the dealerships to try to figure out the problem. If you are interested in joining me in this suit please let me know.

We have had several issues since we purchased the car. Brakes, $200., WICM switch$200, tires were hard to find$1200., Then the S/O sensor left rear oddly had to be replace after our towing package was installed$100.00. Not pleased with the expense out of pocket for such a highly reviewed car. Nothing was covered under warranty. Will not buy a Chrysler product going forward.

The car doesn't start on the first attempt every time. It clicks, but fails to turn over. I have to retry 1-2 more times, and then it starts fine.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason. It happens when it's recently driven, when it's been parked, in rain, on dry days, mondays, thursdays...whenever.

My 2009 Dodge Journey has not started on multiple occasions leaving me and my toddler and infant stranded in over 100 degree weather. It can take up to an hour or more for it to finally start again. I hate to drive the car anywhere for fear it will not start again. Have had to call someone to pick me and my children up multiple times. I am a single mom and this is our only car. It is at the dealership now for service. will never buy a dodge again. Have had too many problems to list.

Journey Bare GL 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 56,000 miles

The '09 Journey is becoming widely known for stranding drivers at random with NO START/CRANK break downs that happen after about 30K miles. My vehicle is part of a fleet of Journeys that our company leases, where more than half of the vehicles have exhibited this 'walk home' failure condition! The real travesty is that Chrysler/Dodge Corp can't seem to pinpoint the root cause of this failure. Most of the dealers are clueless and keep swapping parts (ignition modules, WIN modules, relays, starters, etc.) at high expense, with the aim just to get the vehicle back out on the road, to inevitably fail again, and again. WARNING: DO NOT buy this vehicle used under any circumstances until this problem gets properly identified and permanently solved.

As of right now, this is actually the second time that this has happened to my 2009 Dodge Journey. Last year the same issue occurred! The car just all of a sudden doesn't turn over, all the lights on the dash turn on like it wants to start but the only thing the car does is click. Last year, the dealer ran a complete diagnostics on the vehicle and didn't know what the problem was and of course the friggen thing would start when they got to it! What they did was re-program the keys, tightened up all wiring, reset the computer twice, and replaced the ignition node. Until now the car has had no problems, but all of a sudden I was stranded again yesterday. The Journey is at the dealership and I will be going tomorrow (Monday) and see what they say now, how many times am I going to be stranded until this is fixed!

I have had several problems with the keyless entry on my journey and thought I needed to replace battery in fob, until I read some of these complaints. This morning, I am getting my kids in the car to get to school on time and the car will not start. I turned the key and all I heard was a click. I tried several more times. Then I thought maybe if I tried the other key it might work. So I go back into the house to get the other key and the same thing. I am at this point stressed out thinking my daughters perfect attendance is going to be ruined and she will have a tardy on her record. I called a family member to come get my kids to take them to school. While waiting on the family member to get to my house, I tried to start the car again and it started. I thought to myself, maybe moisture or something could have caused it not to start the previous 2 dozen times. However, my husband and I are driving the Dodge Journey from Texas to Florida (Disneyworld) in two months with our kids and I am now stressing out over our safety. I have had some concerns in the past about the car, but now with a long trip ahead of us on unknown territory with a car that might not start when we stop for snacks and fuel. I don't really know what to do. Very dissatisfied with the Journey and the long journey it may bring.
