CarComplaints.com Notes: The second generation Durango was introduced in 2004 and instantly came under fire for, well, catching on fire.

From 2004-2006 electrical overloading in the driver's side instrument panel caused numerous reports of interior fires. The interior infernos became so commonplace that Chrysler eventually issued a recall.

The problems didn't stop there, however. Owners of the recalled vehicles complained about being treated unfairly and given take-it-or-leave-it low ball settlement offers. "They offered me $2000 under NADA retail as a settlement," said one owner, "and have been rude and hostile to deal with." Nothing says awesome service like treating your customers rudely after their cars have already caught on fire.

This has been an ongoing problem started aproximately 8 months ago. Car is driven by my wife very concerned this could lead to serious accident. Car will stall with no warning at any speed, has happend to her many times becomes almost imposible to manuver since power steering goes out and this could lead to a very serious accident in any road with high volume of traffic.

Have spent over 1,000.00 dollars various sensors battery just did this again yesterday.

Crysler/Dodge needs to address this isuue before a death takes place,if has not occured allready. We all work hard for our money and our families are our first concern.

Durango V8

  • 71,000 miles

We have had our Dodge Durango since 2008 and we never had any significant problems with it. That was until April of 2011, when my husband was driving the car to work. He was going about 35 mph when the engine shut off! Power steering and power breaks went out, took all of his power to slow the vehicle down to a stop. Pretty scary! After turning the car back on, the engine light popped on. We left the car alone for a few days and started it back up. Engine light was still on but the car was running.

A few weeks later, it happened again but this time the car was stopped. We had it towed to the dealership and they figured out the problem. This model/year/engine size has a KNOWN DESIGN FLAW. There is a safety bulletin about this problem. They didn't put a cover for the engine for this particular car, so water was able to get inside the engine and damage different components of the engine. They put a cover on it, and replaced 14 more parts that were swelled, corroded, etc. Of course, I called the DODGE MANUFACTURER, and was greeted with a nasty woman, with attitude to spare. She told me our car is out of warranty and there is nothing that can be done. I let her know how unsatisfied I was with their company and that I would never buy another Dodge. She responded with "I'm sorry to hear that". She said that there aren't enough complaints about this problem to have a recall, and that would be the only way for us to recoup some of the money we paid. You better believe that as soon I got off the phone, I contacted the DOT Vehicle Safety and filed a complaint. This isn't a problem that we caused. They didn't design the vehicle to protect the engine from water.

This is a problem that has been coming since the day it rolled off the lot. The fact that Dodge blatantly disregards their customers' safety is appalling. I guess they are waiting for one of their customers to wrap their car around a tree before they fix the problem they created. Oh and to top it all off, the vehicle's engine light just went back on about 3 days after getting it back!

Durango 5.7L Hemi

  • Automatic transmission
  • 84,000 miles

I just purchased a used 2005 Durano 5.7L Hemi in June 2011. It has been running great for over 2 months. I was driving around her locally and I was at a stop sign on a steep incline and had to step on it and then vehicle started stalling and hesitating then the engine light came on. Luckily I was less than a mile from home. I got home and checked the internet for issues like this and found this website with complaints and what people were doing about it.

I drove to the Auto Parts store and had them check the check engine light. It was coding for a cam sensor error. They cleared it and I drove for a few more days and it happened again while slowing down at a traffic light making a right turn, the Durango just stalled out like I had run out of gas. I had plenty of gas. It was pretty scary having this happened in an intersection. More Check engine lights came on and the Lightning Bolt Error came on. Throttle Sensor Error. Camshaft error, Air Temp error.

So I went back to the Auto Parts store, purchased a new air filter, Intake and Carb cleaner and Seafoam deep creep.

I took apart the throttle body and cleaned it and put the new air filter in. The throttle body was so gunked up as if it was never cleaned before. The back of the butterfly plate was brown like burnt syrup. The Cleaner took it right off.

Since reading the post about cleaning the throttle body and doing it myself the vehicle is running great right now. The information that Jim M #54 Post saved me a lot of time and money. I hope this helps others with a similar problem, it sure helped me.

Update from Nov 27, 2011: It has been happening again. Cam sensor error, crankshaft sensor error, throttle sensor error. Very weird cause it always seems to be when the vehicle is hot and when it hits a 1/4 tank of gas or less than it stalls, sputters, has numerous errors. Then it goes away for weeks. It isn;t happening as much since cleaning the throttle body but this Hemi Engine is posssed for sure. It stalls out when making slow turns just like others have posted. I am always ready to put it in neutral and start it again. This is very dangerous whats going on with these Hemi Durango's Still looking for the cure, keep you posted. Fuel also over flows when you fill it like others have posted, so I rarely fil it anymore unless I'm holding the nozzle.

Update from Mar 17, 2012: The stalling problem got worse and worse. I finally purchased the Cam Shaft and Crank Shaft Sensors and replaced them. Problem solved, I have a Hemi again that roars! I haven'h had an issue since cleaning the throttle boday and replaceing the 2 sensors. Hopefully anyone else with this problem see's this and fixes this dangerous problem.

We are military and bought our 2005 Durango in NC. We have two small children and I( Lindsay) am the one that drives it with my children on a daily basis. When I first bout it in 2007, it wouldn't start a few times and I just let it go. Here we are 4 years later and Overseas, where having an American fixed properly in unheard of and extremely expensive. I see I'm not the only one with this problem, it scares me everytime. Usually when I'm driving slow and making a turn, or going over a speed bumo, the car will die. I can immediately start it back up but I have to put my flashers on and put it in park and then re-start it, all while hoping I don't cause an accident. Now I see people are having this problem at high speeds, this is so scarey, here in Germany they drive so fast. If I were hit on the autobahn, we would be killed. This isn't a funny manner and I really hope Dodge will take care of this, otherwise my husband made the worst purchase of his life, for a death trap. Does anyone have suggestions??

My Durango started stalling multiple times while I was driving it 2 week ago. I took my Durango to the dealership and they tried to diagnose it... it came up with no codes. The mechanic said I just needed a tune-up and to reflash the PCM. $400 and an hour later it is still stalling while driving, coming to stops, and turning. It is truly dangerous, and I am upset that there are so many owners with the same problem and no answer!

Update from May 4, 2011: Well, I had the MAP sensor replaced...a day later it started stalling again. I took it back to the dealership and luckily (I think) engine codes were popping up all over the place. I had crankshaft and cam sensor codes, a barometer pressure code, a "temperature too low" code, so they replaced the cam and crankshaft sensors... not sure if that was the fix, but hasn't stalled today (the past couple of weeks it stalled like 8-10 times a day - I couldn't go down the street without it stalling). Now my damn sun roof won't close... thank God I live in AZ; it hopefully won't rain until July.

OK I'm new to the site and I just purchased a 2005 Dodge Durango and was having a problem of it stalling out when I would come to a stop, well once I just figured it was me, but now I can count on it happening at least ONE to THREE times in a small driving session around town.

I looked this problem up on Google and found this site and can't believe how many people are having this problem. I bought it used and I informed the dealer and they said they would take care of it, so this is where I am at the moment. I will call my local Dodge dealer to see if their is a fix and I am going to look up the recalls again, which I did before I decided to buy this SUV I hope I didn't make a mistake. If anyone had this problem fixed please let me know. Thanks

Update from Jun 21, 2011: Ok so far the dealer I purchased my Durango from was useless. I went to the Dodge dealer near me and they were even more useless. All I felt from them was that they really didn't care to help me out and when I explained to them what was happening and the safey issues behind it the service writer really didn't seem to care. I even told them that there was a service bullitain on this they just responded with a " There are always service bullitains put out, that doesn't mean anything." Plus he tells me he has never heard of this problem before. OK I guess we are all just crazy on this site.

Well all I can say is if there are a lot of us still currently having this problem we should ALL get together AS ONE and call DODGE HQ and COMPLAIN AS ONE. we should ALL DO THIS IN ONE DAY.

I feel as I'm sure ALL OF YOU we should not have to "PAY DIME ONE" on a problem that will not be taken care of untill someone "DIES" due to this. Oh and the name of the dealer that really didn't seem to help me, well if I bring it in and PAY a crap load of money to have them fix nothing from the sound of it from all of you that have been spending and spending only to have your Durango stall again, was "ORANGE COAST JEEP DODGE" in Orange County, CA. I am pissed and only getting more pissed about this.

Our durango's engine light came on, took it to auto zone for read out. 4 things wires & plugs, cam shaft sensor, ignition starter coil, and timing chain. Started with wires plugs and sensor (cheapest). when I drove off it stalled and engine light came on again. Took back to get read out, it just said cam sensor. I then took it in for full test on dealers tester. It came back as faulty sensor!!!! I replaced again, within 100 miles it stalled @70mph and engine light came back on!!!! NOW MY CRUISE DOESN'T WORK!!!!!

I am very frustrated with dodge this is a problem that needs to be addressed. My durango stalls when I back out of the driveway, on the freeway ect... It also seems to be very sluggish unless I punch it. This was a great auto til this SHI>>>>>> started.

I own a 2005 durango with a hemi which my wife drives for work . She mentioned that the car has been stalling out without warning at around 50 mph or higher. . I happened to be driving the durango when it decided to shut off at 65mph and coasted to a stop on the shoulder. No trouble light ,nothing to indicate the problem. Waited a minute, started the car and drive home no more problem so I thought. A few days later same thing , only this time at slower speed and 3 times within a couple miles. Took the car to a friend of mine

who scanned the computer and found two trouble codes stored P2122 {accelerator pedal position sensor and code P1618 erratic sensor voltage reference signal. It seems that the "fly by wire" system wasn't flying. I called a dealer asking for the accelerator pedal sensor and was told by the parts department we've never heard of it. After looking in the computer for a parts description they came back with a part number # 52021705ac for the pedal assembly price of $130. Just figured I would throw this out there for anyone else who has the same problem as an area to look at for the answer.

Update from Dec 1, 2010: I replaced the accelerator pedal just as the computer scanner indicated only to have the same problem reoccur 2 days later, the durango 's idle went from stalling to revving while sitting in park. I finally decided to look into the throttle body operation . I removed it from the engine and found the front or exposed side clean but the back side covered with gummy deposits which causes it to stick . Cleaned all of the deposits from the throttle plate with a $5 can of throttle body cleaner and have not had any problems whatsoever for over 2 weeks ,

Update from Apr 15, 2011: Sinced I cleaned the throttle body thoroughly the Durango has not had one incidence of stalling. It is a relatively cheap solution {$5 for a can of throttle body cleaner and a clean rag] When the throttle plate gets gummed with varnish on the engine side it sticks , when this happens the ecm doesn;t recognize what speed the engine should be running at so it shuts it off. I read the complaints where people have the computer scanned and all of a sudden everthing is not working, throttle position sensor, crank sensor, spark plugs and even the trans. This part

should be serviced about every 30,000 miles and these stalling problems can be eliminated.

I have had my 2005 dodge durango 5.7 hemi for 5 months now. after the first month of having it, it started stalling. first it wouldn't start and stay started, now it has moved on to shutting off while i am driving. nice huh? i thought so too since i have 3 small kids that ride with me everyday!! i have made complaints with both chrysler and NHTSA about this today. chrysler's customer service girl told me she was making this a emergency priority and sending it to the case manager immediately today so i am supposed to hear back from someone by 8 p.m. monday night. this is extremely dangerous! i can't wrap my mind around why dodge hasn't recalled this! it has been reported just as much as the gas tank ( which i had to get fixed as well ) and the gas tank got recalled so why isn't this? it is just as dangerous and important. it is a life threatening situation. i could go out today and it will shut off while i am driving and another car can plow into me! is it seriously gonna take someone to get severely hurt or even die from this before they wake up and do something? cause if one of my kids or anyone else gets hurt from my vehicle shutting off, there will be all kinds of hell to pay for chrysler dodge! it is sad that i am scared to drive this thing and ever more afraid to let my kids in it! all we wanted was a nice dependable vehicle for our family to ride in since i had a ford before and they are worthless ( but we won't go there) and all we have got from this is headaches! this is the worst investment i have ever made!!! My husband is a dodge man and that is why we got it to begin with. i don't even like dodge! now i definitely hate them and won't advise anyone to get one! we have spent so much money on this and now we are stuck with it. all i gotta say is something has to give and dodge needs to do something NOW before it is too late and someone gets severely hurt!!!!!

Dodge Durangos are just a piece of gas hungry junk that can't even stay running. To all out there " DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK". There are much better SUV out there to spend your money on. I signed the loan on my 2005 Durango in November of 2009 and almost immediatly the problem stated. It stalls out randomly while driving, when Im at a stop light and espically when I'm in slow moving traffic or in reverse. The fastest I've been driving is at 55mph when it just cuts off completley, its almost like its out of gas because the radio stays on which means the battery is still working just fine, but no it does it even when I've got a FULL tank of gas. I taken it back to the Dodge dealership several times in the last 10 months and at first they said it was the spark plugs so I paid to have those changed but its still doing it! Now the dealership says that nothing is wrong with it at all. They are making me feel like a crazy person but I can't fake this! My vehicle just shuts itself off when I'm just driving down the road. I'm afraid its going to kill me one of these days.

We have a 2005 Dodge Durango, a couple of months ago it started stalling out at stop signs and lights, always when i was about to stop, i could watch the rpm gauge drop as it was getting ready to stall, we took it in to my son at the auto shop he works at, and he was finally able to pinpoint the problem, we had our tranny flushed a couple of weeks prior to this and apparently they did not fill the tranny fluid all the way when finished with the tranny flush, we went ahead and filled the tranny to the full mark and we have not had the problem since, hope this helps if anyone else is having this problem.

We have been having troubles with our Durango with stalling for no reason for a bout a year now. It's getting worse, Finally it did it when my husband was with me (he never believed me because it didn't stall when he drove it). Now the lifters are going bad and it almost sounds like I'm driving a deisel truck instead of a quiet Durango. That is my second concern is the lifts, the first one is the stalling without warning. When it starts to idle rough, I know that I need to either rev the engine or speed up, other wise it'll stall. Every one is right there is no engine light at all. I'd get rid of it if we didn't owe alot of money on it still.

Driving down the interstate at 70 mph, the engine quits without notice. Would not start back, will not turn over, crank will not even turn. Had to pay $265 to have it towed back home. It's going to cost $4700 for replacement engine. An engine that plainly has many, many problems and DODGE refuses to fix. It's not right spending that much money on a vehicle and the engine blows going down the interstate. I think we should all join a class action law suit.
