We purchased this vehicle from Dave Smith Auto in July 2005 and have enjoyed it for many years. Then in Dec of 2013 it just started stalling without warning while you were driving and you had to quickly steer to the side of the road to restart. We drove 8 hours one day and it stalled when we were almost home. Next day it won't start, have also replaced 3 batteries in 6 mos. Just yesterday the engine started racing while driving and then it stalled while driving in traffic. Luckily I was able to pull off to the side of the road and restart it without being hit.

Now have 170,000 miles, car's in good condition, but a royal PIA. Never know when it will stall, and we'll get cremated by traffic behind us. Going to try new cam shaft and crank shaft sensors to see if that will work. Did the PEP boys fuel line cleaning for $89 and it was okay for 2 weeks, then started again. Anyone with ideas, please let the rest of know.

I LOVE my truck, but since last November it has been shutting off suddenly without any kind of warning. I can be in heavy traffic going slow, or driving down an open highway, sitting at a stop light, you never know, engine just shuts down, dash lights go off. does it when it is full of gas or low on gas, can't figure out what it might be. read the post about the key batteries, we are going to try that tomorrow, hope that is the end of it, as it can be quite dangerous depending on the surrounding conditions. i agree with another post, it is very difficult to get it off the road in traffic and not power steering or brakes!

Does your durango seem to stall at almost the same place every time? I was told the truck was not recognizing the key properly and it was a security feature not unlike a valet key/ kill switch or some such. After months and months of issues, i unhooked the vehicle battery for a few hours, removed the replaced the key batteries, and have never looked back. I hear this happens to rams also from the same era. I bet your dash lights flicker off as it stalls also. I believe it kills the system after a certain amount of time vs. Distance. But since we all usually drive the same patterns, it seems to die at the same place. Cheap enough to try, and it worked for me.

My vehicle developed a stalling problem when coming to a stop prior to engine and drive train reaching full operating temperature. This issue never showed any codes or check engine lights. This problem only occurred when temperature was below 60 degrees at night and vehicle had been sitting all night.

Dodge dealrship had the car for over 3 weeks and could not identify the problem but, they did experience the issue. Turns out this problem was a result of the poor job they did when servicing my transmission. I have also found from my own research that their is a known issue with the transmission service as it relates to the filters NOT being installed properly. Dodge had issued a service bulletin to the dealerships about this. If your stalling problem has started after you have had your transmission serviced trust me and go to a transmission specialist and have them service it again for you.

Ok, I've had my 05 Durango for going on 5 years. I got the truck in 07 with 8k miles on it, and everything was great. So, eventually I ran into a guy that owned his own Dodge Durango about 3 years ago, and he warns me about a problem he was having about his truck going dead. We talked about it, and he was asking me if I had experienced the problem myself. Of course I said no, and figured it was an isolated incident until last week. At first, I thought it was bad gas since I had just filled up 2 days prior and the truck started sputtering out. Then Saturday, Im on a busy road and the truck just dies while I'm going 40 mphs. If you're experienced this (which most of you have), then you know how scary a situation like this is. The brakes barely work, and it takes a good amount of effort to steer a dead truck going 40 mph off the road while slowing down. Of course, I'm nervous about the situation since my girlfriend tends to use my truck to do her errands around town. I go to the dealer, and he says he's never heard of this problem and that there isn't any reported issue with this being a wide spread problem. So, I left assuming it was an isolated incident and drove the truck 2 more day before it cut off on me 4 times in less than 10 minutes. This time a flashing check engine light is on, I go to autozone to get the warning checked. They told me its a crank shaft sensor that has gone bad. I'm not the most mechanical guy out there outside of doing simple stuff like oil changes, called NTB and Precision tune. Both said they needed to run 100 dollar diagnostics, and the NTB said that the work could be an additional 400 dollars, Precision tune gave me a flat rate of 150. So, by chance I stopped at Autozone again on the way home, meet a guy that works for a local shop. Tells me to buy the part (which was 30$), bring him the truck and he'll just put it on for 40$. He put the new sensor on, and now its been 3 days without a stall. I'll keep you updated if the problem keeps occurring =)

I have been having intermittent stalling problems with my 2005 Durango 4.7 over the past 4 years. As mentioned repeatedly on here, it just dies without warning with no warning light indications etc. I have only had this happen at low speed or while accelerating and turning. A few times, this has occurred while pulling into heavy traffic. I was able to pop it into neutral and restart it to avoid getting creamed. Today, it happened again at low speed with a near full tank of gas. I have used fuel cleaners, changed the plugs and maintain it religiously..still with no success in resolving it. I am going to try the throttle body cleaning next. Either way, clearly this is a common problem that Dodge knows about and will not address. I filed a NHTSA complaint today on this issue and encourage you to do the same. Go to NHSTA.gov and follow the links. I really love my truck and it has otherwise been very reliable....I hope Dodge steps up to the plate and fixes this before a tragedy happens

My wife first told me about an issue with her 2005 Dodge Durango (5.7L V8) in July of 2011. She reported a hesitation in what seemed like the fuel system. The vehicle was also stalling without warning and without any indication lights coming on. This became very dangerous at times as we would be slowing to turn across traffic and had no warning that the vehicle had stalled until we tried to turn and the power steering was out. As we have three young girls, I was gravely concerned about this issue. I contacted my local Toyota dealership in Muscatine, IA and showed the service manager a copy of this complaint thread. The reason was to eliminate repeating what others have tried and had not worked.

The first thing we tried was to do a full cleaning of the fuel system (was needed anyway). The issues remained. Next, they stated it could be a bad EGR Valve Assembly...and they were correct! After replacing the EGR Assembly on September 9, 2011, we have had no issues of hesitation or stalling! The vehicle runs like new again. The total cost to replace was $197 and well worth it.

I was driving down the road at about 40 MPH when suddenly my vehicle shut down. Of course, the power steering and breaks also cut off and I had very little control of the vehicle at all. I contacted that National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and filed a safety complaint. This is the first step to having a recall issued. The NHTSA decides whether to conduct an investigation and part of the determination is made by whether there are other complaints. It is very important to contact the NHTSA and file a complaint so that they are aware that this is a widespread issue and so that they will investigate and require that the manufacturer issue a recall. First off, I am SOOOOO thankful that I found this site before I shelled out a ridiculous amount of money trying to find a solution to this problem. SO thankful! I purchased my '05 Dodge Durango on Sept 17th and loved it! Very clean, glossy black and in great condition. Mine has 7 seats and it's just perfect! Unfortunately, right away I began noticing that it idled VERY roughly. And was burning A LOT of gas. By the 19th, it was stalling. On one occasion, it stalled about 5 times before I finally made it home. Very frustrating to say the least. Then, to add insult to injury, the engine light came on.

I called the dealership and they said to bring it in, which is an hour away. Before making the trip out there, I started Googling. I was shocked and appalled to learn that this is a common issue with this vehicle. And even more bummed out to learn that many people had yet to find the solution. My "new" car high came plummeting down. When I saw the comment posted about cleaning the throttle body, and how that fixed the issue, I had to try it! Based on the previous experiences posted, I expected I would take it in to the dealership, they'd run scans and find nothing. I couldn't afford to waste my time like that so I just decided that I'd have the throttle body service done on my own dime. And now to the good part!!!

And let me tell you. She is PURRING now! Oh my gosh! I can't believe a $59 visit (with the coupon) fixed all of the problems that were occurring. It idles SO smoothly now - no more revving while at stop lights, etc. No more stalling. No more jerking when changing gears. And better gas mileage!

For those of you who are still experiencing these issues, please save yourself some money and some headaches, and just take it to Pep Boys. No, this is not a plug for them. This is a plug for peace of mind! It's priceless!

Driving down the highway, my 2005, Durango, 4.7 4X4 stalled, several times, losing power to steering and brakes. It was very dangerous, as cars were rapidly approaching as I managed to hit flashers and pull to the side of the road. I read many posts of this same problem. Once I got into the city, it would skip between 1st and second gear, and generally stall from 2nd to third. I was able to fake it out by manually shifting 1, 2 and into drive, all in tow mode. I had it towed to a transmission shop, and they are currently replacing a very corroded sensor, as well as repairing a fluid leak in the line.

We have had an issue with the vehicle surging and the rpm's bouncing starting at 18,000 miles. The Dodge dealer stated nothing was wrong with it every time we took it in. It has always killed when you least expect it. Now it has continued surging with the lights dimming and then killing, but also shifting extremely hard into second and sometimes not wanting to shift at all. Then it will downshift and clunk like you hit a pothole hard. The vehicle is currently 2,000 miles over on the warranty, yet Dodge has NEVER done a thing to fix it in many attempts at having the problem solved on our part. The transmission fluid is clean, has no smell and is as pink as if it was fresh.

our dodge durango stalled while we were traveling to the mountains. i am very thankful that we were almost at our destination when this happened. we barely made it into the parking lot of the place where we were staying. i had to get on the phone and try to find a mechanic that could look at it which was difficult since this was on a weekend. we finally found someone who told us he thought that it would be ok that sometimes these dodge durangos would do this and that it was probably because of traveling to a higher elevation. after leaving it parked for the day we drove it home and it did fine. since then it has stalled several times when slowing down and has even stopped in the middle of the road without any warning. the engine light comes on and goes off. sometimes the electronic throttle light comes on and goes back off. after reading so many of the same complaints it makes me very nervous to drive it and today it cut off as i was crossing a busy highway. i am just very thankful there wasn't anything coming. i was just trying to fine out what it would cost me to get it fixed and i am shocked to see that so many people are having the same problem. i told my husband the very same thing that so many others have said that we are going to have to get something done or we are going to get killed in this car. i do not understand why chrysler has not done something about this. i am very upset and do not have money to try and figure out what needs to be done. i depend on this vehicle everyday. and i too have a family that i am concerned about while traveling in this car. it looks like there is no need to take it to a dealership after reading all of the complaints. that is useless. this is really frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!don't think i will buy another dodge durango after reading all of these complaints about the very same problem that chrysler doesn't seem to care about! we live in a pretty sad world these days!!!!
