CarComplaints.com Notes: The second generation Durango was introduced in 2004 and instantly came under fire for, well, catching on fire.

From 2004-2006 electrical overloading in the driver's side instrument panel caused numerous reports of interior fires. The interior infernos became so commonplace that Chrysler eventually issued a recall.

The problems didn't stop there, however. Owners of the recalled vehicles complained about being treated unfairly and given take-it-or-leave-it low ball settlement offers. "They offered me $2000 under NADA retail as a settlement," said one owner, "and have been rude and hostile to deal with." Nothing says awesome service like treating your customers rudely after their cars have already caught on fire.

Whenever I am stopped or idling, my car will shut off by itself. The RPM gauge will jump up and down and the engine will rev by itself, while my foot is on the brake. The dashboard lights will flicker, then the car shuts off. The interior electrical is off but the running/outside lights are still on. The steering tightens up, but the brakes work. The car is able to be put in park, shut off and started right back up, so far. It normally only happens when going at slower speeds, or stopping and being idle. This has been happening for a few months, normally once a week, but this past weekend it has happened three times. We now don't leave town with this vehicle and I am actually scared to drive it just around town. I have kids and don't want something to happen while im driving at accelerated speed. According to all of the 100's of other complaints I have found, no one is able to figure out what is wrong, dealerships can't find a problem or codes. Which has been my issue. Plus, Dodge doesn't want to do anything to help. I was told I shouldn't look on the internet for complaints.

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Durango. While driving approximately 35 mph, the engine stalled and overheated. The contact was unable to restart. Three hours later, the contact tried to restart the vehicle; however, fluid was leaking from the engine compartment. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the spark plugs were replaced. When the contact started the vehicle after it was repaired, the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer but no repairs were made when the complaint was filed. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000. The current mileage was unknown.

2005 Dodge Durango stalling while slowing down or accelerating from a stop. January 2010 dealer said they could not find anything wrong. Happened again 4/8/2010. Dealer replaced egr valve but could not guarantee that would fix the problem and to come back if it happens again. Hopefully it does not happen again in traffic and I get killed or kill someone. I am afraid to drive this car.

Our 2005 Dodge Durango with a 5.7 hemi engine shut itself off out of the blue while driving home. It is the third time it has happened in the last 3 months. Driving speed was around 35 mph. It happened as we let up on the throttle. It does restart but it is very hard to stop and control when it happens.

  • 80,000 miles
I have a 2005 Dodge Durango slt with the 5.7L V8 hemi. I just purchased it used January 16th of 2010 with 80,000 miles on it. The vehicle has begun to stall (the steering locks up, brakes hard to push, engine cuts off) when making turns occasionally from the stopped position, or when accelerating. It varies as to when this happens, but it has happened to me 5 times since Jan. 16th. The latest incident was yesterday (Feb 1st) while making a turn off of rockport road onto highway 37 North in bloomington, Indiana. The speed limit is 60 in this stretch of the highway, and as I was turning onto the highway the Durango quit working. I immediately put it in park and started it back up and floored it in reverse to get back onto rockport road. I had given myself ample space to pull onto the highway to avoid traffic, however at those speeds, two vehicles had approached rather fast. This morning I did a little research into this problem at work, and I have found numerous complaints of the same issue. This is a serious safety concern and one that needs to be addressed immediately. The dealerships says the engines are going bad, the sensors need replaced. Well I am here to tell you these are all lies. I work as a sales representative at the Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealership in bloomington Indiana, and our service department (the same as every single one in the us) diagnoses these problems "to the best of their ability", ability that is terrible in my eyes. They are there to make money of everyone (including me). They are paid on commission just like sales people. Higher replacement means higher pay checks. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Here is the website I came across with more complaints as well www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2005/Dodge/Durango/engine+and+engine+cooling+system. I only started at this dealership 5 months ago and was told by my management that the Durangos were great. I just don't want anyone getting injured because of this!

The technician detected metal circulating in the oil. He recommended that the engine be replaced. The vehicle was in the process of being inspected by an authorized dealer. The failure and current mileages were 80,000. The VIN was unavailable.

I just purchased an 05' Dodge Durango with the 5.7 hemi motor. I have had the vehicle 1 month and it has just started stalling on me. Very scary situation. It has happened at the exact same spot both times. I have researched this online and found a couple of forums where this apparently a major issue. I come to a stop at a red light, start to accelerate to make a right turn and lose all power. It has done this 2X in 1 month. Please let me know if this problem has ever been diagnosed.

I have a 2005 Dodge Durango slt with a 5.7 hemi. Problems with engine stalling. This has happened while stopped at a light/stop sign, pulling into/out of driveway/parking spots and most recently while driving approximately 30 mph. The stalling has happened about 15-20 times since owning this vehicle. Almost total loss of steering and braking was not 100%. I have had it into a Dodge dealer before for this problem and of course they've found nothing so no repairs have been made. This is very dangerous especially since I almost always have children in the car with me.

05 Dodge Durango 5.7L V8 engine stalls during deceleration and turns with acceleration. Extremely unsafe and happens frequently with loss of all power steering and power breaking. Driving 60mph on freeway 331 engine stalled on lane merger causes several cars to severely break and the Durango to run off the road in a ditch. The result was towing the vehicle to a dealership for repair. After vehicle was picked up we drove the vehicle 100miles at which time it stalled again causing another near fatal wreck with my wife and 3 small children present. This issue is a know problem with ddc however we were not aware of any stalling issues. I feel this needs to be fixed before someone is killed. I feel my family was put in danger over an issue that seems very common.

My 2005 Durango stalls when slowing to a stop or slowing to turn. There is no warning, everything just stops. Loss of powersteering makes the situation very unsettling and dangerous, especially when making an unprotected left turn in heavy traffic. I have had the vehicle for almost two years and have notice an increase in the number of stalls over the past few months. Have not yet had the vehicle looked at due to the inability to consistently recreate the problem.

My 2005 Durango stalls at low speeds, often while decelerating (turns, parking etc) and is causing a serious safety issue. Engine stall causes power failure to steering and brakes and has almost cause accidents. The car starts back up right away after being placed in park. I am concerned about allowing my wife to drive with children in car.

I have had several occasions of my RPM accelerating and overdrive shifting. I have also read numerous amount of complaints pertaining to the same issues with other customers that have purchased a Dodge Durango as well. I have had the car inspected and there seems to be no problems. This is a problem and I think that this needs to be addressed. It can be dangerous on the highway with my car jerking and shifting going 70mph. I believe Dodge has a error that they need to own up to. Please contact me regarding this matter.

Purchased a used 2005 Dodge Durango limited with the hemi. It has died multiple times at red lights with no warning and no pattern to the stalling. Have called multiple dealerships who claim they have no prior experience with this problem. Each time it has started up immediately but with a 7 month old baby I fear the consequences of continuing to drive this vehicle when no one seems to know what causes the problem and with an internet search have found that I'm not alone in having this problem.

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Durango. The contact noticed that the engine warning indicator would illuminate on the instrument panel. She took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the spark plugs and coil wires. Immediately after the repair, the engine completely failed. She took the vehicle back to the dealer and they stated that the engine needed to be replaced. The engine was replaced, but the failure recurred. She took the vehicle back to the dealer on several occasions and they replaced the catalytic converter, several spark plugs, and coil wires. As of January 30, 2009, all of the remedies have been insufficient in correcting the failures. The manufacturer did not assist. The failure mileage was 45,000 and current mileage was 68,000.

I have a 2005 Dodge Durango slt. The vehicle has stalled on several occasions while driving approximately 5 to 15 mph. Recently, I made a legal U-turn and the vehicle stalled halfway into the turn. Because the car stalled, I was not able to continue with the full turn and I was sitting in the road with cars coming head on. I immediately put my car in park and started the car and put my foot on the gas and got out of immediate harms way. It is truly a miracle that I was not hit by a vehicle head on where cars were coming at me at approximately 45 mph. There needs to be a recall before someone dies if it hasn't happen already. If something happens to me while I am driving this vehicle this is my proof of trying to get a recall for a very serious malfunction. This issue needs to be investigated with great care and quickly. I was shocked to see how many hundreds of thousands of other Dodge Durango owners who are complaining about the same incident. Please, please help. This is very scary and I am truly scared to drive this vehicle. I am terrified that the vehicle is going to stall on the highway or in front of a school bus or truck, possibly causing more fatalities.

The car stalled when driving without any warning. The dashboard lights when very bright, and then the car stalled. I had to re-start it. Thank goodness no one hit my car, I wasn't in an intersection or on the freeway (I commute every day on it with my child). We went to the local auto-mechanic. He said the ets valve needed to be replaced. We replaced it for $344.16 however, though he kept it and drove it, it didn't happen to him and he said it would be hard to be 100% sure it that was really the issue. It was his best answer. He couldn't understand why a car that only has 39K miles on it and is 4 years old would do this.
