CarComplaints.com Notes: The second generation Durango was introduced in 2004 and instantly came under fire for, well, catching on fire.

From 2004-2006 electrical overloading in the driver's side instrument panel caused numerous reports of interior fires. The interior infernos became so commonplace that Chrysler eventually issued a recall.

The problems didn't stop there, however. Owners of the recalled vehicles complained about being treated unfairly and given take-it-or-leave-it low ball settlement offers. "They offered me $2000 under NADA retail as a settlement," said one owner, "and have been rude and hostile to deal with." Nothing says awesome service like treating your customers rudely after their cars have already caught on fire.

The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Durango. While driving approximately 55 mph, the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was taken into the dealer where the technicians replaced the egr valve. The check engine light continued to illuminate intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer a second time where the technicians were unable to diagnose the failure. The contact took the vehicle to a different dealer where there were several repairs made. The vehicle continued to experience the failure. While driving approximately 55 mph, the contact noticed the interior of the vehicle felt hot and there was smoke inside the vehicle. The contact pulled over to the side of the road. The contact waited for the vehicle to cool down and drove to the dealer. The technicians noticed the wiring harness and the intake manifold had melted. The technicians replaced the lifters, wiring harness, intake manifold and the oxygen sensor. After the repairs were made, the check engine light continued to illuminate. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 72,000.

When filling up the gas tank, the fuel tank filler tube inlet check valve does not function properly. It does not close and gas always spills out. I am afraid that gas spills out while driving. At times, with the keys in the ignition, the car will turn off by itself if I am moving slowly. I bought this truck in 2006. The first year, I brought the car in for stalling on its own. The dealership told me that there was nothing that they could do and the car did not have a problem. I brought the truck in about three times for the same problem and every time, nothing was resolved. After that I did not have the money or the time to continue bringing the truck in for a problem that the dealership was saying they could not find. Over the years, I have just dealt with this truck stalling on its own. About 1 year ago, I noticed that the car started spilling out gas if it was filled up. I did not know there was a recall until I researched the problem online. I found that there was a recall. I contact Chrysler customer care, they looked up my VIN # and told me that they did not have any recalls listed on my particular truck. I explained to the representative that my car had a problem with the fuel tank filler tube inlet check valve and that gas spilled out. I told them that I was afraid that gas was spilling from the tank while I was driving. The representative told me that there was nothing that they could do and told me to take the truck to the dealership. I am afraid that if I take the truck to the dealership I will be responsible for all of the expensive charges to fix this problem. I do not have the money for this since I am paying $700 a month for a truck that should never have been financed at that amount in the first place and is not worth the amount still owed. The consumer stated she was involved in a head-on-collision on April 25, 2011 and the air bags did not deploy. Also, the rear wiper made a whistling noise. Updated 08/12/11

On 4 occasions my vehicle has shut off while trying to turn on a intersection at a low speed. All fluids are in the correct levels and no fault lights appear. The vehicle does start normally after a second. The incidents are sporadic however are concerning because it could cause an accident. This appears to be a common issue with this type of vehicle an many have complained. The dealer can't do anything because they cannot recreate the problem and computer does not show fault code. I tried contacting Dodge customer service about it but they are not willing to help.

My Durango will stall without warning. It normally does this at low speeds such as coming up on a stop sign or doing a 3 point turn. When it stalls you lose power steering and brakes. It has also happened on the freeway in stop and go traffic.

My 2005 Dodge Durango stalls at low speeds or when stopped at light. Stalls when turning in front of traffic. I have gone online to read hundreds of similar complaints. Dodge dealership has done nothing but charge people money for futile repairs that hasn't solved the problem. Someone is going to get killed. I pray a family with small children don't have to be the sacrifice for Dodge to do something about the problem. This is very dangerous. It was opened for investigation but later closed. Due to people like me who didn't know how to properly report the problem, just go to the dealership for them to tell us we are wrong and the Durango is just fine. Please open this up for investigation, I will let you keep my Durango for 30 days to see for yourself, you can pick it up anytime.. please don't react after someone pays the ultimate price, it may be you or someone you know and/or love.

Since I purchased in 2006, vehicle has intermittently stopped running when turning (left or right). I can start it again, but it will continue to die several times when stopped or turning. It may happen several times in one month, or nothing at all for 6 or 10 months, but continues to do I--4 years now. Dealer can't find the cause, independent mechanics can't find the cause. When its doing this and I'm stopped (in drive) RPM's will bounce from 2 to 0 a bunch, then it will die. Am also having surges when the vehicle is stopped. And it stalls when I drive through a puddle. Not a lot of water... your average puddle that every other car goes through fine. Power steering goes out and the car stalls... sometimes it dies, sometimes it makes it back to life. My vehicle was doing all of this at under 20,000 miles and continues to do so. This problem has been reported for years now. This is a dangerous problem. When my car is having one of its "days", I don't drive it. I'm not risking myself or others.

2005 Dodge Durango hemi. When driving approx 30 mph my Durango just died in the middle of a very busy intersection. I lost all steering and brakes. Its a miracle I didn't cause a 20 car pile up. I was just about to get on a major highway. I have 3 kids who were luckily not in the vehicle with me. They towed my Durango to a local shop who could not determine what was wrong. They inturn towed it to a Dodge dealership where they told me right away that the valve spring went and now I need to replace the engine. I cannot believe there has not been a recall on this, especially when I see how many other have had the same issue. Dodge needs to step up to the plate and take care of all of us with these engine problems. At this point I'd rather buy a Toyota that another Dodge. At least they recalled their vehicles and took ownership of the problems they were having. As it stands I have been out of a vehicle for 2 weeks now and no signs of getting it back soon. I have been told that the new engine I had to buy at $8,000 is backordered and cannot get until Dec!!! I have 3 kids and no longer a vehicle to fit everyone in. I asked about a rental to help me out but was also told Dodge won't do that either.

I have a 2005 Dodge Durango that was purchased from cars plus in lenoir, nc in March 2010. Starting about three weeks ago the vehicle began to lose all power while it was being driven if you start around a turn or hit the brakes. This does not occur every time you take a turn or hit the brakes. In the past three weeks it has happened 8 times. When this happens the vehicle looses all power. You have no brakes and no power steering. There are no warnings this is going to happen. We have had it to the local Dodge dealer twice and someone else once. Nothing pulls up on the computer and they can't find anything wrong. Dodge has told me this is my problem, even though there are about 800 complaints about this problem in the 2005 Durangos on the computer, because my warranty is out. I am afraid to drive this vehicle because I don't want to be in an accident. I don't want any injury to come to my children or someone else's children. I am paying payments on a vehicle I can't drive and don't want to trade it in and someone else get stuck with this vehicle and possibly get injured driving it. I don't have any more options and would like to know what to do. My insurance company has told me I would be responsible for any accident in this vehicle because they can't find a defect. I don't want to trade my vehicle in to the dealership and just pass the problem along, but I need a dependable vehicle. Please advise me what to do with this safety issue.

I have already filed this complaint but never got any resolution and the problem is getting worse. The engine stalls at low speeds. It sounds just like your what is described in your investigation EA05018. It is now at the mechanic and they have been unable to diagnose a problem so far. I am concerned about driving this vehicle and if this is a known defect I want to know why Chrysler/Dodge or the ODI cannot offer a fix immediately before safety is further compromised?

My 2005 Dodge Durango keeps "shutting off" while I'm driving. I am usually turning and going less than 20 mph when it shuts off. My radio stays when this occurs. I have to put it in park and turn it back on. It has done this since 2006 shortly after I purchased it. I have taken it to the Dodge dealership where I purchased twice and have been told that nothing shows up wrong. They suggested the next time it does it, to leave it be and have it towed. Umm, kinda difficult when I am in the road when it shuts off.

Durango

  • 56,000 miles
For the fourth time in as many months, my 2005 Dodge Durango has completely lost power without warning. This past February, I had the dealer put in nearly $2000 worth of work in addition to fixing the recalled issues of the instrument cluster and fuel tank. The power loss happened after this and after having taken it back once to the dealer I will not take it to them again due to poor service. I have also had my local mechanic run a diagnostic test on the car, but nothing comes up. The car simply loses power and I am forced to try to steer it to the side of the road, put it in park, and start it up again. No "check engine" or other warning lights come on. I am now very concerned for my safety. This car is 5 years old, very well maintained, and has only 56,000 miles on it. If someone from NHTSA cares to check on the edmunds.com forum, they will note many similar complaints with the hemi 5.7 engine on the Durango. I would like for the NHTSA to further investigate this dangerous situation.

My Durango engine shuts off while driving down the road with no warning. Once it shuts off I totally loose all power steering/power brakes. It happens totally at random, sometimes it will happen multiple times a day, sometimes it will go months in between incidents. No accidents have occurred as of yet, but there have been many near misses, especially when driving on windy roads, when lack of power steering is a serious issue. I've taken it to the dealer who has stated that due to the randomness of the issue, they would have to keep it, charging me $80/hour trying to even replicate the issue, no codes were able to be found. After research on the web, this is not just an issue with my Dodge, but has happened to many other people. The first time it happened was around 40,000 on my vehicle, outside of warranty. Once the vehicle shuts off, I am able to put it into neutral and it will start back up fine as if nothing was wrong.

Engine stalls without warning losing all power assisted control to vehicle. Vehicle stall will occur at random times and during different driving maneuvers; turning left, stopping and driving straight. Service/repair shop unable to duplicate problem in order to diagnose the very potentially dangerous hazard created by the defective vehicle. Stalling occurred less frequently in the beginning but has increasingly become more often; approximately once a day.

In March I had my 2005 Durango in for the 2 recalls and additional routine maintenance was done at that time as well. It has 55,000 miles on it. This past Saturday, it stalled without warning and without the check engine light coming on. I was able to start it back up. I took it to my mechanic. He ran a diagnostic scan as well as drove it, and nothing at all showed up. I am very fearful to drive this vehicle because of its sudden stalls. I see online that this appears to be an ongoing issue and would like for Chrysler Dodge to address this situation immediately.

I was driving our 2005 Dodge Durango with our 2 young children in it. Made a left turn, traveling at approx. 5-10 miles per hour when vehicle stalled without warning. No steering...no power braking...nothing. Truck was able to restart immediately following the event. We took it to our mechanic who could find nothing wrong with the truck. After reading everyone else's complaints. I'm not surprised. I am terrified to drive this vehicle and will not put our children in it. Current mileage is 66,000. What if this happens when I am in an intersection or merging onto the interstate?
