This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
While driving the consumer had no control of the front end. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic who stated that the upper ball joints needed to be replaced.
Front ball joints (upper & lower) worn out completely at 70,000 miles. I've owned a 1986 Nissan pickup with 200,000 miles with original ball joints still in good shape. Looking at the number of complaints about the same problem on this site, sounds like a possible design flaw/defect.
Both lower ball joints need to be replaced. Vehicle had very low mileage for this kind of problem. Warranty expired. Consumer was advised the upper ball joints show some wear but not a repairable stage. Vehicle began pulling to the right for no reason. Vehicle was taken to a mechanic whom stated the ball joints were so bad an alignment couldn't be done. The consumer took the vehicle to his mechanic for a second opinion. His mechanic confirmed the same thing. Consumer was informed that the ball joints were redesigned because of this reason. To make sure the redesigned parts were used, the consumer took vehicle to the dealer.
Upper and lower ball joints worn out, tie rod end loose needs replaced to align front end. I have already paid close to $1100 to have this problem fixed. Arnell Chrysler told me there is no recall on this problem. My truck has only 42242 miles on it and never been off road. Help with this problem!!!
My 1999 Dodge Durango has been identified as having defective ball joints. When I contacted Chrysler, they told me to take it to a Dodge dealer for verification but would not ensure replacement. My dealer has the parts in stock for replacement. The dates cannot be certified as exact, just within a couple of days.
Dodge Durango 1 service brakes - warped rotors locking brakes even with antilock system ball joints - premature wear, leading to poor steering response.
I own a Dodge Durango, I had to spend almost two thousand dollars and replace a ball points. I spoke to my regular mechanic about this, he said that, it wore out prematurely.
While driving my 1999 Dodge Durango, (2wd), I heard a oud "popping" noise comoing from the area of the front drivers side wheel well opening. Upon further investigation, I found the front ball joint was worn to the point of imminent failure. The dealer replaced the complete upper ball joint assembly at a cost of approx. $500. This vehicle is almost exclusively on highways in and around metro atlanta and never off-road. The vehicle has stock wheels, tires and suspension components. In almost 30 years of driving and owning many different types of vehicles, this is the first time that I have had a failure of this type. I was fortunate to detect the problem before it resulted in a serious accident.
The front vall joints are shot. The right uper and lower andf the left lower need to be replaced with under 40,000 mile driving only on roads. I feel that this is premature and that Dodge should do a recall since it is a potentialy dangerous problem.
1999 Dodge Durango, balljoints are out at only 70000 miles.my service person told me that it was bad!it could of caused me to have a wreck!what if I had my kids with me and they went out at 70M.P.H!does someone half to be killed first!maybe if someone looks at this maybe they can save someones life.
At 70mph, on I-75 in Michigan '99 Durango transfer case blew apart causing vehicle to jump with smoke pouring out the back of the vehicle. Was barely able to get vehicle under control and off to side of road. Mechanic stated front driveshaft cracked thus maybe causing transfer case cv joint to go blowing apart transfer case. Another vehicle experienced a flat tire at high speed due to running over pieces of transfer case. Have spent over $4000 dollars in repairs to Durango in 3 years including (front driveshaft, transfer case, water pump, PCM, upper & lower ball joints, upper control arms, sway bar bushings, front rotors, brakes, etc. Only 78,000 on the vehcile when transfer case blew up. Can I file a claim for lemon law regarding ball joints. Uppers need replaced again.
My Durango started to make a loud grinding noise from time to time. The dealership I took the car to could find nothing wrong with it and while driving home after picking it up the upper ball joint on the right front tire failed disconnecting the tire from the vehicle. My truck only has 33,000 miles on it and I only drive to and from work. Not only was the one that broke replaced but so were the others as the dealer said they were all showing wear. This seems to be a factory defect as these things should not be failing at 33,000 miles.
The ball joints failed at 50000 miles. The dealer was notified. The consumer was told that the alignment wouldn't stay due to the upper and lower being 1/2 inches off. There was a clunking noise when placed in reverse and the passenger side front window was inoperative.
The service center at the Dodge dealer informed me that the upper ball joints on my 1999 Dodge Durango need to be replaced. The vehicle ony has 46,000 gentle miles on it. I believe that the ball joints are either defective or have been designed undersize.
