While driving, the consumer heard a cracking noise coming from the front of the vehicle. Vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the mechanic determined that the upper and lower ball joints were defective. Dealer recommended not driving the vehicle.

A service call found that the ball joints on our 1999 Dodge Durango were worn and should be replaced. We had our vechicle checked because of reports done by cbs news where there had been a number of incidents where worn ball joints on newer model Durangos had caused wheels to fly off while on the road. The news report on cbs indicated an NHTSA had been receiving complaints and had been investigating this defect.
While driving 55 mph, the rear driver side wheel sheared off. The driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and pulled over to the shoulder. Driver had the vehicle towed to the dealer for an inspection. The mechanic replaced the upper ball joints.
The vehicle was inspected by two dealers. Both dealers determined that the front upper and lower ball joints wore out and the front tires were about to detach from the vehicle.
The upper and lower ball joints, the tie rod ends and the sway bar have been replaced twice. Also the front hubs have been replaced three times. The dealer cannot determine why the parts keep failing after a short period of time.
I had to replace the upper ball joints (both sides) on my 99 Durango when it had @ 50,000 miles. Brand new set of tires was wearing on the inside, took it to a mechanic and he said the ball joints were so bad he would not drive it across town. Replaced both ball joints and replaced tires. Then on Feb. 20,2004 with 93,000 miles on it the transmission went out. Spent $600 on ball joints, $350 on tires, and $3,200 on a transmission.
