During the summer of 2001 I started experiencing severe smoking coming from the tailpipe at startup. I would also encounter the check gage light every time I would stop the vehicle and the oil pressure gage would drop to 0 and return to midrange. I took the vehicle to jim may auto sales on 2 different occasions to have it checked and they said that it was normal and not to worry. It is continuing and I am now hearing a severe knocking from my lifters and am putting oil in the car every 1000 miles or so. This is a fleet vehicle and all oil changes are well documented. I took the car while the warranty was still good, but now it has expired. What do I do now"?"

The engine failure is caused by a fault in the engine. It will turn oil into sludge in the pan until the engine seizes, no matter how often you change the oil and filter. This is a widespread problem that Chrysler claims to be an operator failure to maintain issue. I have been in contact with numerous others through the internet having the same problem. This is also not limited to the Durango, it is widespread throughout the V8 models that Chrysler sells.
