While the vehicle was being serviced, the dealership indicated the upper ball joints were worn and needed to be replaced. The consumer felt that Chrysler should cover the expense to repair this vehicle before any major accidents occurred.
Drivers side wheel has a loud squeaking noise due to corrosion of the upper ball joint. Through a inspection this problem was spotted. Upper ball joint grease was non existent and the ball joint assembly appeared to be failing. When the vehicle was taken to the dealer, it was determined all four upper/lower ball joints on the left and right side needed to be replaced for safety reasons.
We recently had our Durango in for preventive manintenance and discoverd front end ball joints had abnormal wear and posed a serious hazard while driving. Further research on abnormal wear found that a number of Durango's reported same type of abnormality. We paid over $800 for repair and feel this type of problem should be strongly considered for recall regulations. This could have caused a serious accident to my family and other Durango owners as well.
I have been told that my ball joints are not safe and need to be replaced. I have also been told that this is a very common propblem with this make of car and there is an ongoing investigation.

I have a 1998 Dodge Durango. I saw reports of the NHTSA investigation of defective upper ball joints for Durangos (1998-2003). I had the vehicle inspected and not only were the upper ball joints in need of replacement, but the lower as well. I was put in the position to either spend $760 or risk the safety of my family. I paid for the work, have a receipt and the ball joints that they replaced. My question is, if there is a recall, will I be reimbursed by daimler Chrysler for the work that was done
Premature wear of both upper and lower ball joints on my 1998 Dodge Durango. The dealership where the vehicle was purchased new and serviced periodically wanted to replace them after 36000 (highway) miles at a cost of $1200. Two other Dodge dealerships have since reported the same problem.
Consumer stated the vehicle made noises. It was taken to the mechanic to diagnose the problem. They had to replace the upper ball joints, the right inner tire rod and the idle arm. The fuel pump assembly malfunctioned which caused the vehicle not to start.
