This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Poorly designed transmission failed, the cooling system was restricted and caused the transmission to overheat, the overheating of the transmission resulted in planetary failure. Nlm
I notified the dealer as well as the zone manager for the company of the problems, and never received any feedback at all. When I called the service department, they said since they did not do the work, nothing more could be done. This vehicle has been nothing but major problems. The vehicles are known for the transmission problems and nothing is ever done. The transmission began failing at 56,000 miles.
Transmission problems have existed since 6 months of ownership, air conditioning as well. Why doesn't extended warranty with western national honor their contracts?
Consumer noticed hesitation so took to the shop to get fuel injectors cleaned, a week later, vehicle started making a whining noise and would not go over 25mph, next day vehicle would not move at all, due to transmission failure.
First time was a modulator, we paid for it to be fixed at about 34 to 40000 miles.at that time car was shifting repeatedly. This time it was shifting very hard and jerky, while driving 3rd gear went completely, almost caused an accident on interstate. Now the dealer says the transmission needs to be rebuilt, at a cost of $900 to me! shouldnt a transmission last longer than that? the cars value as trade in is only about 4000 without the trans problem. That would mean I could only get 2800 if I was lucky. Will never own another.

The automatic transmission does not shift appropriately, remains in low gear when accelerating and has occasionally shifts into neutral and then back into gear while driving.
Transmissiom serviced at dealer at 15252 mi on 6-24-96. Again at 32243 mi on 5-06-98 and again at 45163 mi on 8-10-99. ON1-12-2000 diagnosed with leaking solenoid pack which was replaced on 2-02-2000 at 50954 mi at a cost of $284 on 5-24-2000 I was quoted a price of $1700 to fix an internal leak.this is most definitely a defective product and Dodge should bear the cost for repairs.
We bought our Caravan used through a personal sale, but the warranty was up to 36,000 miles. At 38,000 we were driving along (with my year-old son in the car) at 35 miles per hour when it felt like the engine was going to fall out of the car, and the car had to be brought to a stop on a very busy road with no shoulder. We decided to take it to our mechanic who told us that it was the transmission. Robinson's transmission in buxton, Maine did the repairs. He did a complete overhaul of the transmission, which cost us $950. Now again, in April 2000, just over a year since the last time, at 61,000 miles, we were going through the intersection of a busy street crossing (again with my son), and the car suddenly went into a crawl. I was stuck in the middle of the intersection with my foot on the gas, but unable to go anywhere. Luckily, other cars saw us. Again, we took it to robinson's garage and again he did the overhaul of the transmission. We had just gone over our warranty with him, so he allowed us to split the cost of this second-time repair. This time it was $400. After our first incident, I contacted the Chrysler corporation and was told that because I was 2,000 miles over my warranty, that they could do nothing for me. I had a very disturbing conversation with a woman named diane, who offered me no comfort whatsoever. We bought this mini-van so that we could ride comforably with our son. But now after these 2 incidents, we are no longer feeling that we all are riding in a safe vehicle. Other mechanics have told us that they often see this type of problem with Caravan. People need to know about this before someone gets killed. Thank you very much, --pam gillingham.
I have taken my vehicle to the Chrysler dealer ten times for the same repair, yet it has never been repaired, about 90% of the time the vehicle will not shift out of second. This forces me to stay on city strrets and prohibits me from using the highway. Each time the dealer says that it is fixed I pick it up and it eventually does the same thing again. We picked the vehicle up last Friday and it didn't shift on our way home. I took it back this Monday. They did put in in a rental but my point is I have a van that cannot be fixed and is unsafe to drive.I called Chrysler and they didn't seem to careat all. I still owe 6,000 on the van and I can't trade it in when it doesn't shift. I am afraid to drive it and fear it will end up leading to an auto accident. What do I do?.
After being stopped at stoplight, placed foot on gas, however, van had shifted into neutral, had to reapply the brake to reset - has not yet happened in the middle of the highway - but have heard others say it is possible. I am frightened as I drive 18 miles/highway to and from work in this van - with not even 40,000 miles yet.
Heard a noise that had been going on for a while. Took vehicle to the garage and was not able to find out the problem. Had vehicle back, and transmission failed immediately. Contacted dealer, and they replaced transmission.
While driving along at 30 mph transmission shifts into low gear, which causes the van to slow down suddenly. Dealer has been notified about the problem.
Failed transmission/replaced A/C evaporator and now compressor - totalling $4,000 - how does Chrysler stay in business? please take action for us, they are no help!
This is the 2nd time I have had to replace a transmission on a Caravan. Has anyone every done any statistics on what percentage of Chrysler's minivans have had transmission problems? what's horrible, is a good percentage who replace them once replace them again. Just because this isn't a life threatening problem, doesn't mean that it shouldn't be addressed. Chrysler needs to take responsibility for their product. Please look into this. We need some help.
Vehicle transmission locked up at 30 mph and nearly caused impact from rear by vehicle behind. Transmission mechanic stated that Chrysler was aware that the overdrive hub and planet (originally made for 3.0 and 3.3 liter engine) were not sufficient for 3.8 liter engine. Later made larger part, but did not recall part or notify owners. He was aware of this defect through working for dealerships. Stated the defect is known by dealerships and not reported to consumers. This causes the sudden lockup of the transmission. I had just exited the interstate when my van locked up. I certainly would have rolled if it had locked at 70mph on I-10.
