CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer is known for many things, but perhaps it is most famous for its faulty fuel gauge.

This gauge flip-flops more than a politician during election season. Some report that the gauge says "empty" after a fill-up, while others report the gauge says "full" when they're running on fumes. Either way, there's one thing everyone seems to agree on: the darn thing is just wrong.

Following hundreds of complaints and a few accidents allegedly caused by the malfunction, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into the issue in May 2011. Unfortunately for frustrated owners, no recall has been announced.

Trailblazer LS L6

I thought my speedometer had gone where no speedometer has gone before, but it seems that is not the case. One day I noticed that my speedo was saying I was doing 60 in a 35 MPH zone. I was not actually going 60, but when I came to a stop, it rested on 30 MPH. Now it has gone beyond 120 and points to the odometer, and when I am stopped, it rests anywhere between 100 and 120 MPH. Contacted GM, looking to get a supervisor to call me back, so far still no recall, so I will looking for other ways to get this resolved. As I told GM rep, I will not pay any money to fix an obvious defect from GM, and if this does not get resolved, my next car will not be a Chevy or any GM for that matter. At least Ford can pay its own bills without Govt intervention.

Well from looking on this board it is obvious GM has a problem with this particular vehicle with the speedometer cluster going bad. My car is currently sitting in the driveway going 120mph since the stupid speedometer does not work. I contacted GM and they told me based on the fact that the car is 5 years old and there is currently no recall on this item they would not cover repairs. This comes AFTER they made me go in and pay $102 for a diagnostic on a problem where I already knew what was wrong and had it diagnosed unofficially by a friend prior to taking it in. The only reason I agreed to take this to the dealer was due to the fact that I was led to believe by the GM hotline that once the diagnostic was done they would assist on the cost. They turned me down for the repair and are refusing to give back my $102 for the diagnostic as well. My next car will not be a GM. I told "William" that on the hotline today and the only response was that "he was very sorry to hear that I would no longer be a GM customer" I say enough government bailouts on a company that does not have its finger on the pulse of its customers!

instrument panel malfunctioning

I bought a 2005 Trailblazer Ls on Valentines day and test drove it and seemed to be fine but as soon as I took it off the lot it as it turns out its true colors showed. The speedometer claimed I was going 60 mph when I wasn't even going 45 mph. I went to get gas and as I was stopped it claimed I was going 70 mph not even physically possible. When I drive now the needle points straight down as if im going like 250 mph. To top it off my Oil pressure gauge is way passed full. The needle also is pointing almost straight down.

As I have read this is a "Cluster" problem and what I don't get is why it hasn't been recalled especially with the tons of complaints with these problems. GM needs to get the butts in gear and stop jerking everyone around cause no one should have to pay for this since it's a very common problem. I included a picture of my speedometer and oil pressure gauge with the car parked in the parking lot not moving and shut off. If you have any of these problems I urge you to file a complaint at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ so we can all get this resolved cause apparently the repair shops charge $450-$600 to repair.

Crazy gauges, need gas warning light came on. When I pumped gas it only would allow about 3/4 of tank of gas. Afterwards my need gas light continued to be on until I hit a bump and it went out, but my gauge still reflected I was out of gas. Called GM after investigating and found there are many of us having a similiar problem. Called the GM customer service number and talked to a representative that oh so politely told me sorry about your luck.

My 2005 Trailblazer speedometer stopped working a couple weeks ago. Called the Chevy dealer only to be informed this is a common s service dept. says they replace the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPS) regularly with the 05 TrailBlazers but as of right now....you're stuck paying for it out of pocket ($550.00) until enough people complain about it to Chevy for them to generate a Recall on this problem..call to complain 1-800-222-1020

Just adding my complaint to the growing number of complaints about Chevy instrument panel cluster malfunctions. Speedometer quit working altogether and have not been able to get any resolution from the dealer that I purchased it from even though I have been a good customer of theirs for over 10 years. GM put out a resolution for vehicles with less than so many miles but my vehicle sees a lot of highway use so it has higher mileage. Whatever the mileage is should not matter, GM knows they manufactured vehicles with defective parts so they should make them right. The Trailblazer is not mentioned at all in the replacement policy, I guess GM forgot they used the same IPC's in almost all of their vehicles.

when it rains, it pours. Love my Chevy Trailblazer but lately I would like to set it on fire. How in the world could I be doing 110 in a parking lot full of other vehicles. Okay no problem, I figured if I would just turn off my truck the speedometer needle would set itself. WRONG.... the stupid thing doesn't pass 70. so now I'm guessing how fast I am going and too scared to even think about speeding up. Can't afford to pay the State of Georgia extra for a DANG ticket. Chevrolet what was the purpose of the bailout money? You have a vehicle bearing your name with alot of SCREW UPS, do something about before someone is seriously injuried.

The speedometer and gas gauge both stopped working in our 2005 Chevy Trailblazer. We had already had the cluster panel replaced because the speedometer stopped before as well. The mechanic at the dealership even stated that it was just faulty equipment and that we should complain so that GM would do a recall. After finding this site and seeing how widespread the problem is lets all hope they take care of it.

chevy is crap i bought my 2005 trailblazer with 47000 miles put about 3000 miles on it at 50000 miles gauges went crazy including gas, speedometer, tachometer, battery, oil, and rpm gauges, i have replaced the dash cluster 4 times and when fixed it fixes prob for a couple weeks. headlights flash when down shifting replaced alternator 2 times and got the plastic pieces that surround the door handels and around the shifter 3 times they pop off and break at $50 every time i replace it adds up all to gether i have spent $7678 in 3 months on this sh*t of a car. chevy needs to back this situation on the dash cluster it is a safty issue instead of just glancing to see how fast we are going so we dont get pulled over we now have to look at it longer to figure out how fast we are going and add it up, and looking down to long can result in a crash and or a fatality or inattentive driving tickets and driving inatentivaly is a safty issue.

to chevy: i will see that these issues do get recalled u cowards man up and treat all the people who keep u in bussiness loaly dodge does and i will trade both of my chevys for more of dodge u pukes p.s. it is a safty issue loosers and if it is not tell it to my dad who got hit by a guy driving chevy trailblazer and was looking at guadge to see how fast he was going and thanks to chevys neglect to their poor quality vehicles my dad is now parralised from the waste up

Just like all the other complaints here....gas gauge worked then one day filled up with gas and started the car, showed full tank and then within seconds I watched it go to empty with the gas light on and the Ding-Ding- Ding to remind me it's empty...but it's not then the gauge goes slowly to full then to a half tank....that's all changed months later,,,it doesn't work at all......Same as the others we keep track of how many gallons we buy and estimate gas mileage by checking the trip odometer..This is ridiculous. I'm still paying on this vehicle. CHEVY /GM SHOULD DO SOMETHING. I CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY $500.00 TO FIX THIS!!!! I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER CHEVY !!!!

My 2005 Trailblzer had a speedometer malfunction. It is stuck at 30 and and I figure that from that point I am 25-30 mph off on my speed.Since the malfunction I called the local Chevy dealership and they said it would be about a $500 repair.I have checked on the internet to see if this problems is severe and was amazed at how many failures of instrument clusters there have been.Apparently GM does not want to own up to the severity of the problem in the Trailblazer problem.Apparently the new GM(Government Motors) will even be more difficult to deal with when there are major problems with their quality.Evidently the GM standards are now lower forcing Americans to search elsewhere fore a quality product and a company that will own up to their failures.

I have documentation in regards to a class action suit in Washington which has resulted in a settlement by GM but the trailblazer was not included in the settlement.

This will be my last GM vehicle.American manufacturing hits another low point.

Update from May 3, 2011: I checked with the local Chevy dealerships and they wanted anywhere from 500$ to 800 dollars to replace the instrument cluster.I decided to have it done in Idaho and it cost me $125.00 to have all the stepper motors replaced and received a 5 yr. warranty. It cost me an additional 50 dollars for the mailings and 50 dollars for removal and replacement.Total cost was 225 dollars. It is not a problem only with the gas guage but also the speedometer and other guages controlled by separate stepper motors.Factory replacement gave only a one year warranty and a higher cost.Another GM rip off and failure to take responsibility for inferior equipment. My equipment now is fine and I am sure better than the factory replacements.

My cluster panel went out on my Trailblazer at 57,000 miles first time. Out again at 71,000 miles. 4 days past warranty of part and GM or the dealer will do nothing to help me. This is a known problem with GM and they refuse to recall this on the Trailblazer. In my opinion go out of business if your not going to take care of your customers and build dependable vehicles or at least stand behind them when you know there is a problem who needs you. I knew I should have bought a Toyota. Bet I do next time. I have 4 Chevy vehicles in my household, one by one they will be changed to a Toy..... Thanks for the nice american made cars GM...GO OUT OF BUSINESS I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER><<<<

Second time same cluster panel has went out on this POS Chevy. I hope you do go out of business at least you won't be manufacturing crappy vehicles for us to purchase and not stand behind them when you know there is problems.... Taken to court on other models with same issue.... Why not own up to your poor quality of vehicles, get with the program and fix the problems instead of hiding behind them and hoping they go away. I guess they will when you finally go bankrupt.....

Trailblazer LS 4.2L

Started the vehicle up and was on my way to work one morning. Looked down at the gauges and noticed the oil pressure seemed kind of high. It was a cold morning so thought maybe it just had something to do with the oil being cold. When I turned the vehicle off the oil pressure did not go all the way down to zero. Now every time I start it up it seems the the needle keeps going over a little farther. It has gotten to where the oil pressure needle is pointing almost straight down while the vehicle is running and is still past 80 when it is not.

Apparently this is not the first time this problem has occurred. This is not the only electrical problem I have had with the vehicle. I noticed the other day that neither one of my rear door speakers are working and also some of the lights on the air conditioning control panel just work when the feel like it. Also the little light on the fuel gauge that tells you when you are low on fuel seems to be glowing very faintly at times. I have also had the fluctuation on the amperage gauge while coming to a stop. Also the air conditioner fan motor does not always work on the 5 setting.
