This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
We received an important safety recall to replace the airbag inflator (NHTSA recall number 21V051). After taking our vehicle to the dealer, we were told that if we want the recall then we have to pay to replace our dashboard (over $1,000). The dashboard has a crack which is a common and well-known defect of GM Chevrolet trucks from 07-14, but it is not part of the airbag recall. And now, GM hides behind a so-called "cosmetic" issue in our dashboard to avoid compliance with the recall. GM is not acting in good faith to remedy the defective airbag in our vehicle. We feel very unnerved to drive a vehicle with a bad airbag that GM refuses to fix without great expense. Others are likely facing the same issue for this recall.
The dash is cracked on the both windshield-edge corners of the passenger-side airbag cover and broken over the driver-side instrument cluster. The driver-side breakage has spread from the windshield inside edge to up and over the instrument cluster. It has been glued and patched but has continued to disintegrate and is now completely broken. This vehicle has been driven on road and highway. The dash has been cracking and breaking over a period of 5 years.

Cracking dashboard needs replacement, I have replaced our cracking dashboard and would like to receive some type of compensation for my expense. This is an issue that is ongoing with all of these types of vehicles.
Over the last 6 months my dashboard has developed numerous cracks in the dashboard. There are 2 cracks at the passenger air bag cover on the top corners and a long crack on the drivers side dash above the gauge cluster going towards the windshield. I have no specific date when this has happened. I am putting in this complaint as I have seen this on multiple vehicles of the same age and looking online of all the complaints of the same.
2012 ltz 4WD Suburban, noticed a faint hot smell, thought it was the engine, took it in for an oil change on new years eve 2018 ( we had lost an engine in previous Suburban not taking chance) told by mechanic alloy wheels are hot, took to GM dealer, front wheel hub needed replaced, took to local garage for repair, garage told us brakes, caliphers, rotors be replaced due to caliphers being closed. They had hard time bleeding the lines, also replaced master cylinder, drove for few days short distance when front brakes caught fire, without warning, towed back to garage, they could not find cause, replaced brakes and rotors, drove for a week happened again, towed back to garage, they took to GM garage who replaced brake sensor, drove for few days locked up again kids in car, had towed to another GM dealer, told brake system tested normal to replace ABS computer module, drove 2 weeks locked up again with kids in car, towed back to GM dealer, we were told by GM it was at risk of loss of life or catastrophic injury and they were sending tech, till we did not put GM brake pads, possible replacement of brake system could fix but not guaranteed. GM dealer had Suburban 2/19-9/9/19 and it still is locking up without defined cause. I have been without vehicle this whole time & still owe on the vehicle. It was taken back to Chevy dealer 10/26/19 after locking up again. There are no warning lights, the brakes lock up. There have been 2 major GM recalls regarding 2014+ Suburban my issues are very similar regarding the braking system and even more severe. Had we been on busier roads we would have had an accident. We went to GM Corp. / GM dealer lied to GM Corp. We have vms to prove. Over $3K put into the vehicle and it still is not fixed, the brake system is $4K & that has not been proven to be the diagnosis. Vehicle not drivable. Pics from 1/27/19 incident, fire / smoke visable,
Went to buy a new Suburban, found a good used one without the cracked dash. Well within 2 months we now have a crack in our dash. Were told this is a common problem and was told $1500 to fix this issue. I find it unacceptable that Chevy would not take care of such a major issue with their vehicles. How are there tons of other brand vehicles without this issue? always have a sunshade on the vehicle and was it once a week. I now want to trade this for something that doesn't have such a problem. Crack looks like it could interfere with the airbag operation. Or send shards of plastic when airbag is deployed. It happened parked in our garage over night.
While driving on the highway I hear a pop and notice a piece missing out of my dash above the airbag and then begin to notice the crack in the dashboard run across the dash to the drivers side. I have noticed other complaints about GM dashboard and believe this is a safety hazard due to the crack being at the airbag and running all the way across the dashboard. If the airbag deployed it could send half of the dashboard into the front seats of the vehicle.
About 6 months ago, I noticed a crack in the dashboard at the top left corner of the passenger airbag. A few days later, a small crack appeared on the driver's side over the instrument cluster. Within just a few days, that small crack grew approximately 6 inches and is now on the hump over the cluster.
When my Chevrolet Suburban 2012 is locked using the key fob or remote start, a person inside the car cannot unlock the doors or tailgate from the inside (via the door unlock buttons near the door handles or the tailgate button) to get out of the car. Example, parent accidentally leaves child in car, exits car, uses fob to lock doors; child now cannot unlock the door or tailgate using the unlock buttons by the door handles nor by using the tailgate open button. The person inside the car is locked inside and cannot exit if they do not have a key with which to turn on the car or a fob with which to unlock the car. When the car is locked with the fob a person inside the car cannot get out of the car using any button or handle inside the car. This occurred when the vehicle was parked and the ignition off. Two adults tested this multiple times and tried all possibilities to unlock and get out of the car from the inside when it had been locked by fob or remote start. I have a video demonstrating this which I am happy to share, but believe that I cannot upload below as it is not one of the permitted formats.
When trying to start put SUV the key gwys stuck and won't turn after this started happening our stability control sensor started going off. It used to turn off one U shut off the sub but not it's always on. And the key won't turn unless U wiggle it.
A crack formed above the instrument console and over the top right corner of the passanger airbag on the dash. This is a serious concern if the airbag goes off there will be plastic flying all over the place. I see a history of hundrads of complaints over this exact issue.
The dashboard on this vehicle has cracked. The crack started behind the steering column and is now cracked over the passenger side airbag. Should there be an accident, and the airbag deploys, the possibility of injury from the dashboard is significant. This is a defect in manufacting, and should be repaired at expense of
