This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
While driving down the road a large piece of the dash exploded violently projecting a sharp plastic piece of the dash, hitting driver in the face, narrowly missing the eyes, bouncing off and landing in the 2nd row seating area. Thankfully, there was no infant or child in those seats or they could have been injured. The temperature outside was 100+ in the summer in Texas. The cracking dash issue has been reported by us and by numerous other complainants many times previously. This is an ongoing problem that has clearly not been taken seriously by GM.
I took my vehicle to have to air bag repaired and it has a cracks all over the dashboard now. I contacted to representative and was informed this is a Hazzard of this vehicle. It is a known issue but it has not been addressed by the GMC company. How many people have to be injured or killed before it becomes and actual safety issue" Whose life is considered expendable? If it is a known issue and it has been, in good faith, brought to GMCs attention, why has it not been corrected"
Dash cracked and fell apart. Had to replace the entire dash board assembly. The dash was cracking as if it was made of glass. A piece of the dash even broke off while I was driving and fell on my lap..

Dash is falling apart, full of cracks; chunks of plastic dash have broken off. Potential safety issue if involved in an accident, especially if dash airbag is deployed. Large sharp pieces of dash will break loose and become projectiles/ shrapnel. I believe sunlight and high heat in parked car has caused this. Not caused by an accident. Definitely a design flaw. Should be recalled.
Cracks (2 separate cracks; photos attached) appeared in the dashboard of 2010 Chevrolet Suburban lt above the steering column and near the passenger airbag. The vehicle was stationary in the driveway when the cracks appeared -- there was no event to cause the cracks to appear. A search on a GM online forum advised this to be a known defect for cars of this model and year.
There are several cracks in the dash of my 2010 Chevrolet Suburban as explained below. One of these crack is in the area of the passenger side airbag which is mounted on top of the dash. As the dash expands in the heat, typically in the hot months of the summer, the plastic portion of the dash will cover the airbag portion of the dash. I am concerned that if I do not notice this and the vehicle is involved in a crash, the airbag will not operate properly. I am afraid vehicle occupants might be injured by the dash if the airbag deployed under the plastic portion of the dash or that they will be injured if the airbag would not deploy properly. There are also two cracks in the dash in the area over the instrument cluster which allows a portion of the dash to be completely removed from the main dashboard. This portion of the dash that can be removed causes a problem on long trips due to the fact that it will vibrate out of place. My concern with this piece is its location in relation to the steering wheel. I am concerned that if this piece moves out of place, it could move into the open area at the top of the steering wheel and interfere with my ability to control the steering of the vehicle. I was also informed by a local dealership that my airbag or airbags have been recalled. In regards to both of these issues, the customer assistance representative advised that GM is aware of both problems, but that they are still investigating the problems and possible resolutions. How long does it take to investigate the cause of the dash problems? this has been a well documented problem for several years that affects many vehicles, yet GM claims not to know what caused it or to take any responsibility for the inferior dashes that were placed in quite few year models of their vehicles. I feel that this broken dash is a safety issue with the vehicle.
On the instrument panel the message "service air bag" and airbag readiness light symbol stays on when ignition on and while driving. Dashboard cracked. Back passenger seatbelt won't lock at times.
Dash is cracked in 6 different spots; 3 of the cracks being around the passenger air bag. If the airbag were to deploy, the dash would shatter thus causing sharp projectiles to be dispensed in the vehicle cabin potentially causing serious injury to the occupants. The cracks start down where the bolts connect to the body (they extend further down than what can be seen in the photos).
My dash cracked in two places one at the corner of the airbag and the other in the center of my instrument cluster. Noticed this while driving yesterday.
The dash is cracked at the corner of the passenger airbag. This seems to be a repeated issue with GM and is clearly a defect when so many of their vehicles have been effected in the same place! there is already a recall on the passenger airbag that GM isn't wanting to fix and now my dash is cracked completely apart by the passenger airbag. How safe is this, where is their responsibility?
Dashboard has begun to crack in numerous areas, 1 area that is very concerning is right by the passenger airbag which I feel concerned that if it were to inflate the dashboard would would send projectiles flying. The dash is also cracking severely above the instrument cluster. Upon research this is a issue that the internet is flooded with and GM refuses to address the problem. I contacted GM in regards to this issue and they refuse to take responsibility although at a dealethis ship when I went looking around 4 out of the 5 vehicles for sale on the lot had the same cracks in the same places. I need help from NHTSA to resolve this issue before my family is put in danger in the event of a vehicle accident. This crack seemed to occur when the weather got cold, I turned on my heat and the desk immediately cracked. This is flawed equipment and we as consumers should not have to deal with it.
My dash has cracked twice on my 2010 Suburban. It cracked the first time approximately two years after I purchased the vehicle. Chevrolet replaced the dash under warranty. The dash cracked again approximately two years later. There appears to be some sort of design flaw with the dash. The dash does not have enough rigidity to accommodate the normal vibrations during the driving of the vehicle. The cracks in the dash are located next to the passenger side airbag. I am concerned that the dash will become shrapnel if the airbag ever deploys.
