Upon stopping the Suburban, the anti-lock braking system kicked in at a low speed resulting in a accident and rear ending the car in front of us. I'm worried for my families safety with this Suburban. Updated 11/07/11
The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban. While driving various speeds in wet or slippery conditions, the brakes locked. While driving around a curve, all four wheels locked and the vehicle slid for 20 or 30 yards. The surface was wet and the contact lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle struck a curb, which stopped the vehicle. The rear driver's side rim was cracked. The wheels unlocked after three to five seconds. The contact noticed that the wheels usually lock when the pavement is wet. The dealer stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 05V379000 (service brakes: Hydraulic, antilock). The repair would cost $900. The current mileage was 134,000 and failure mileage was 117,000. Updated 04/23/08.

2000 Chevy Suburban. Anti-lock brakes activating under dry normal conditions causing longer stopping distances. Investigated NHTSA website and found future recall notice relating to this condition. Presented vehicle to dealer to fix problem. Dealer performed recommended fix, but this did not remedy condition, in fact it may have exacerbated the problem. Dealers only recommended solution was to replace the front wheel hubs containing the anti-lock sensors at a cost of $850. Dealer indicated that it has had to replaced numerous hubs for the exact same problem on theses vehicles and that Chevy has not taken responsibility for any of these services under warranty or recall status.
The consumer stated the ABS did work. On Friday 7-15-05 three deer ran out in front of her and she slammed on her brakes and the car skidded. This has happened in the past. The ABS kicks in when she comes to a stop. No lights come one. She did take it to a dealer and no codes displayed. The consumer saw on T.V. about a possible recall on the ABS. She noticed problems with the ABS when she bought the car but it has became progressively worse. It does not matter what speed she is going, it has happened when she was going 55, 35, 15 and other speeds. It occurs during normal braking and emergency braking. The pedal goes all the way to the floor.
About on 4/1/05 there was a problem when driving at low speeds, brakes made a growling sound, and didn't grab. Extended stopping distance is required. Brakes have been inspected twice by Firestone and once by dealer. All tests showed no reason for problem. Upon reporting the problem to dealer, they reported they weren't aware of the problem.
Consumer states: The power steering and brakes went out immediately, not forewarned. It was raining. A new power steering pump was replaced as well as as the hydro-boost power brake booster and the serpentine belt had to be replaced.
The consumer stated when the brakes were applied, the ABS activated. The dealer found the left front speed sensor dropped out at 8 mph, the left front hub bearing was replaced. Also, the air bag light illuminated on the dashboard, the dealer found the air bag opened and ordered a driver side air bag.
Intermittently brake pedal fails. Brake pedal didn't respond when applied to slow down or braking. Vehicle was going 25-35mph. Dealer was notified, and diagnostic reading couldn't determine the cause.
While driving, brakes completely failed, resulting in an accident. There were no vehicle warnings. Cause unknown. Seat belts did not restrain in accident.
