A recall was issued for this problem on 2000 models, however, my truck is a 1999. I doubt this was a coincidence since I had the exact same failure. This part is virtually impossible to abuse under any driving condition. I feel this part is inherently defective and GM should shoulder the $1,000 repair bill.
ABS light illuminated while driving; upon parking vehicle with ignition off, ABS motor continuously running, requiring fuse to be pulled to deactivate pump; service technician identified bad control module and ABS pump/motor; current technical service bulletin #220101; Chevy first agreed to reimburse 25% of repair (parts only) but would not honor after they learned of independent garage repair.
While traveling on highway ABS braking light and parking brake warning light appeared on dashboard. Applied brakes, pedal vibrated and went all the way down to the floor. Dealership was aware of problem.
Consumer has to go under vehicle to disengage engine from running upon turning vehicle off. The ABS brake system collapsed while driving. Heavy drain on engine and battery. The regular brakes remained functional.
ABS unit went out last month; continued to run after motor was shut off; after checking around, unable to locate part because all on used vehicles are already gone on this year model. Have also found out that several other people that I know have had the same problem with the same year model ABS unit. Only unit that can be found is a new unit through GM at the dealer not at an auto parts store at all. They cannot keep them in stock. Suggest that there is a defect in this unit. Have mine still disconnected till I can find one that is not $700+ dollars, but have checked the web around the us and am still unable to locate any for a 1999 chev. Pu. suggest there is a problem.
The truck was started and the ABS motor started a whirring sound and would not shut off. The manufacturer, Chevrolet, informed me that because I'm out of the warranty period there's nothing they can do and that there is no history of this defect.
I have complained of a very soft brake pedal, will go almost to the floor, the problem still exists, I feel very unsafe driving this vehicle. The dealer said this is a normal feel.
While driving at highway speed anti lock brake light illuminated. Driver shut off truck and removed key. Driver could hear a loud buzzing noise that would not stop. Driver located box were noise was coming, M and could feel heat, and it was getting hotter. Consumer had to unhook battery cable. Consumer felt vehicle could have caught on fire. Chevrolet has been contacted.
ABS motor continues to run after engine is turned off. ABS motor is located in terrible position under driver side door. Bolts to system have rusted due to placement of motor. ABS light stays on and motor runs continuously. Dealer says problem is electronic brake control module. Very expensive to replace and will problably just happen again in another 45,000 miles. Some dealers say just to disconnnect fuse to ABS motor, which could lead to a major problem. Chevrolet should make this a recall.
