This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
ABS failing to operate properly and causing brake pedal to go to the floor intermittently when driving over bump or rough surface. Dealer was not contacted at this time. ABS is too sensitive when applying brakes, any type of pump or wet pavement will set off the ABS. Thus the brake pedal becomes soft and goes down to the floor. The dealer could not fix it.
While driving could step on the brakes pedal, sometimes will go to the floor, then suddenly will have brakes. Vehicle was taken to dealer twice where dealer has not found out what had been causing this problem.
Likely failure of braking system. Hydraulic (brake) fluid reservoir is free to flop around on mounting. Braking system must ultimately fail do to ultimate failure of the seal(s) around the base of this plastic reservoir. Evidence of failure would be in the form of corrossion (rust), water, and air in the system or loss of break fluid, depending on wheather or not the failure is do to internal and/or external failure of the seals. If the vehicle is used on rough roads or in climates w/extreme temperature variations are present, the failure will be much quicker. Failure will be in the form of total loss of brakes, brake fade, and poor stopping power. It will totaly confuse any ABS system in use do to inconsistent/erratic brake performance. All of these conditions have already been reported by various individuals on prior years trucks. Why hasn't this reservoir been investigated as to the effects of its leaking in the form of being albe to suck air/moisture into the brake system or loosing fluid to the atmosphere?? regardless, failure is inevitable, as dynamic seals must utimately fail, and something should be done to eliminate this weak point in this system. If I am wrong, and it has been investigated and determined to be safe, please let me hear from you as I am very concerned about my family's safety where this matter is concerned!
Truck lurches violently when brakes are applied but only when towing a horse trailer. Condition is so severe that the truck is not safe to drive when towing. The trailer has been weighed (8300# empty) and carefully inspected, no problems. The truck is rated to pull 10,800#. dealer tells me that I am pulling too much weight. The disc brakes, all four, were found to be severely overheated and were replaced, but the problem persists. The truck will lurch even when the trailer brakes are disconnected and the trailer brakes can stop both the truck and trailer smoothly by using the hand control. Three dealers, two service reps and a GM engineer are stumped, but GM refuses to give me a buy back.

When braking anytime there is a slight bump in the road the brakes fail, this has almost caused the consumer to collide into other vehicles, the dealer can not locate the cause of the problem.
There has been vibration problems with the truck since May. Now when hitting a bump or any irregularities in the road or depressing brake pedal at the same time, ABS system avance. Truck has been taken to the dealership several times for vibration problems. Dealership has not been able to solve this problem, and stated that this was a normal condition.
Vehicle experiencing problem with momentary delay in stopping when applying brakes in low speed of 30-40 mph. Vehicle been inspected by dealer on two occasions, and informed consumer problem could not be duplicated. Please feel free to provide any further details.
While coming down a steel hill truck would not stop, foot went to the floor, and nothing happened. Felt vibration in the brake. Once on the freeway, and saw brake lights ahead, consumer tried to brake and vehicle would not stop. If any closer, consumer would have rear ended another driver.
Tires are believed to be separated, shake the truck back and forth from L to R and have knots on them. Brake pedal goes to the floor periodically and without warning. Dealer does not know what to do to it.( dot number: Tire size: 245-75-16 )
When the brakes are applied pedal goes to the floor, resulting in extended stopping distance. This happens intermittently. Dealer has replaced the brake booster, and the problem still exists.
Vehicle experiencing the following problem 1.) brake booster had to be replaced on two occasions; 2.) thottle sticking, unble to correct the throttle from sticking. 3.) when applying brake pedal in wet road conditions, it commenced to pulsate intermittently, causing extended stopping distance, and 4.) squeaking sound coming from the suspension. Vehicle been in/out of dealer shop on three occasions, and problems are still reoccurring.
The brake peadle goes almost to the floor with no action until it almost the end, then vehicle stops abruptly. This has happened 5 times in the past 2 months (the 1st occurance is listed). The dealer inspected and reports no problems.
While normally stopping Silverado truck, the brake foot pad kicks back against drivers foot and unable to bring truck to a stop. This last about 2 to 4 seconds and brake pedal goes to the floor and stops the truck. Sometimes the ABS & parking brake indicators become constantly lit. Tipton motors in hollister have replaced at least (1) front rotter and the truck is back into dealer today 10/25/1999. I have also opened a case with Chevrolet, file # 990554386 and I may persue the California lemon law. This is a serious safety issue and I am very concerned because this is my wife's primary means of transportation and this is the (3rd) time into the dealer for repair. It is very stressful not being able to stop normally. I am requesting the government to investigate, this is a bad safety issue. Please feel free to contact me, I am really concerned about the safety of others also.
