Windshield wipers work only intermittently or not at all. Problem is exacerbated by bumpy roads. Online research shows this is apparently a common problem related to cracked solder joints on the wiper control circuit board, a problem for which two recalls have already been issued by Chevrolet but which do not extend to the 1998 model year. Wipers will often shut off unexpectedly while driving in heavy rain. Obviously, this is a serious safety issue and the previous recalls that only cover up to 1997 need to be extended to cover later model vehicles which suffer from the same safety problem. (the incident date in this complaint is a random date selected shortly after I purchased the vehicle and around the time I first noticed the problem. This issue is ongoing and has become increasingly severe since then.)

The contact owns a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup. The contact stated that when he turned on the windshield wipers, they did not function properly. Sometimes they would work for a brief time and shut off and other times, they would function properly. He would have to stop the vehicle and tap on the motor with a hammer or screwdriver to get the wipers to function; sometimes it worked, other times, it did not. The contact called the dealership and was told that the repairs could be performed at his expense. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The manufacturer had not been notified. The current mileage was approximately 71,000. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.

Re: NHTSA campaign # 98V50001 & 97V096001 " windshield wipe failure due to cracked solder joints on the controller circuit board. Unit failed on my 1998 chev S-10 VIN 1gccs1948wk1xxxxx. GM 1st agreed to replace at no cost. Upon dealership confirmation of problem, GM change to position of not responsible. This is a continuing problems with the units according to service manager. GM takes the position that vehicle in not part of any recall. The part involved is the same as on the 1996 vehicles. I replace unit a my expense, dealership did not charge labor. The defect came to my attention when wipers failed and then came to life after touching circuit board housing. The above NHTSA recalls need to be extended to all GM S-10 pickups as well as other vehicles.

Windshield wiper failure: I was driving 70 mph West on I-10 when it started raining. I turned the wipers on, and the wipers worked for approximately one mile before the windshield wipers suddenly stopped working. I pulled to the side of the road and waited for the rain to stop. I've talk to other owners of S-10, Suburban, and Silverado which have had the same problem. I've checked a couple of web sites concerning auto complaints, and there are thousands of complaints concerning the same problem. Why isn't there a recall on Chevy's windshield wipers!!!!!!!!!! how many people have to die before you get off your butt and do something about. Like so your job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Windshield wipers work intermittently when switch is turned to a constantly on position. They also operate unpredictably random or not at all when switch is placed on one of the various intermittent positions. This failure causes problems with visibility, increasing risk of crash. There is a recall on 1995 S-10S (NHTSA id #98V150001) for a similar problem involving deterioration of soldering joints on the windshield wipers circuit. No known recall for 1998.

Windshield wiper works intermittently or not at all. Very dangerous during fog, rain and snow. The 1996 and 1997 models have been recalled already. I believe there is a problem with the 1998 models or I have received a older model motor in my vehicle.

Driving in the rain the windshield wipers fail at random positions. The last incident happened on a country road where there was no shoulder to pull off on to. A very dangerous situation because the drivers visibility was severely restricted to on coming traffic. This failure was on a recall status for the 1996 and 1997 Chevrolet S10 models but not included in the 1998 models. Failure of the wiper circuit board. The problem is known to exist but GM will not honor free replacement of the defective part because of a stated age date even though the vehicle has less than 37,000 miles on it.

In the last 2 months, my vehicles windshield wipers have stopped working while in operation or they simply will not start at all. This is very dangerous with the lose of visibility. I took the vehicle(1998 S10 Blazer) to the dealer and he replaced a bad circuit board module to fix the problem and have paid the dealer for the fix. I have found that GM already has a recall for this vehicle for the 1997 model but my years model is not covered by the recall. The NHTSA id # is 03V159000. GM should cover this very dangerous problem on the 1998 model as it very obvious that this model has the same problem as the 1997's.

1998 Chevrolet S10. The consumer states the windshield wipers do not work. The vehicle has not been looked at. There was a recall for this problem on previous years. This started about a year ago, they would work when they wanted to, now they do not work.

Windshield wipers quit working while raining. Has done this for the last 2 1/2 years. Thankfully I have not wrecked. Everyone I have talked to has said that there is a recall for 1996 and 1997 models but not for 1998's. well there needs to be. Nothing has been to correct the failure be cause cheverolet says there is nothing wrong because there is no recall on this year model. I don't have the money to replace every part and see by trial and error. I've read that it might be a circuit board. I guess its going to take someone getting killed to do something about it.
