This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
While braking the brakes of the consumer's 1995 Chevrolet S10 locked up and caused the vehicle to slide into a steel post. The consumer had no control over the vehicle. The consumer sustained a concussion as a result of the accident. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who informed the consumer that the brakes were functioning as they should.
When depressing the brake pedal vehicle did not stop at the desired stopping point. Vehicle was taken to a repair shop, where no problems were found with the brakes. Consumer found recall 99I006000 for this make, model, and year concerning ABS brake failure. Brakes failed in 5 different occasions in a month.
The ABS antilocking light on the dash board came on. When I brought the truck to the deliver I was told that the bpmv valve had failed and that I had no ABS brakes. Then I was informed that it would cost me $1400 to replace this valve. I find this completely unreasonable for a safety system repair. Since then I have found out from other sources that the retail GM price of the valve is only $108.63. I have also heard that there have been problems with the chev S10 ABS system. Shouldn't this be repaired under a recall? if not it should as least be repaired at a reasonable cost!
Consumer has had two accidents as a result of ABS brake failure.. consumer states told mechanic. Mechanic said that they were ABS brakes, and it takes them longer to stop.
The antilock brakes have failed on several occasions. Cold weather enhances the problem. One accident as occured and several near misses. Contacted GM and the local dealer. They both indicated no recall had been issued on this vehicle for the ABS brake system. Dealer wanted to replace the master cylinder which is in working order. My research indicates that there has indeed been several ABS recalls for this vehicle. I need some help in resolving this problem. Thanks.
On Jan 19, 2002 I was driving South on route 17, when a car cut across the intersection down the road in front of me and a couple of other drivers. I had to applied the brakes, and listened to them groan and glide all the way till they hit the floor, after which I then rolled into the car in front of me. Everyone but myself managed to stop in time with a shorter stopping distance. I must have went 300 ft with brakes fully applied before slaming into the car in front of me. Chevrolet should replace the haynes braking computer system with one that works as tested.
Both wheel sensors failed at approximately 38000 miles. Indications from owners manual stated that there will still be no loss of brakes. There is a technical bulletin (C99046) relating to problems with the ABS on this vehicle-did the problem they refer to contribute to this wheel sensor failure"???" due to inadequate repair service at the closest Chevrolet dealer I waited to go to brunson in hampton SC for repairs on this and also on the failure of the windshield wiper (covered under another recall). They confirmed that both wheel sensors need to be replaced. This seems to be premature failure to me.
Recall 99 V 193 000; intermittently when brakes are applied under normal conditions pedal becomes hard, resulting in extended stopping distance. Vehicle was repaired under above mentioned recall. Consumer stated that after recall was repaired problems started again. Consumer states recall work was done, however after dealer repaired the ABS, the ABS light and brake light would illuminate occasionally and then frequently, dealer replaced the ABS module, costing the consumer $464.28.
Consumer contact dealer a year ago in reference to recall 99V193000. Dealer corrected recall problem. Vehicle experienced brake lock up which caused vehicle to go into a skid, resulting in an accident.
Since the anti-lock brakes malfunction in 97, I have taken my truck to the 2 local "factory trained" service shops on numerous occasions. I've invested a large sum of money on repairs that did'nt fix the brakes, including safety campaign #99041. The service techs are dumbfounded but admit this same problem occurred on many occasions with the kelsey hayes ABS systems. I have spoken to other S10 owners who have encountered the same problem. Despite my constant persistance, the GM dealerships have provided no solution and deny knowledge of recall campaign# 99046. At a loss, I turn to you.
