Ram Tailgate Recall Includes 1500, 2500, 3500
Chrysler recalls 485,000 Ram trucks for power locking tailgates that inadvertently open.

— A Ram tailgate recall has been issued for more than 485,000 trucks because the tailgates may inadvertently open while driving.

The recall includes 2015-2017 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks equipped with 8-foot beds and power locking tailgates.

Also included are all 2018 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 trucks built before April 1, 2018, and equipped with power locking tailgates.

About 410,350 of the trucks are in the U.S., 63,700 are in Canada, another 4,200 are recalled in Mexico and about 7,000 Ram trucks are recalled outside North America.

The Ram recall is an expansion of a 2018 recall of about 1.4 million trucks for the same tailgate problems.

Fiat Chrysler (FCA) says the tailgate actuator limiter tab inside the power lock actuator control assembly may break and allow the lock rod control bracket to travel too far and pull the lock rods, releasing the latches.

The 2018 tailgate recall included 2015-2017 Ram trucks equipped with power locking tailgates, but the action didn't include trucks equipped with 8-foot beds. Chrysler monitored the field for reports about tailgates that inadvertently opened, finding 127 warranty claims and repair orders.

With at least 60 complaints about trucks not included in the 2018 recall, the automaker says a recall was necessary, although no crashes or injuries have been reported.

The Ram tailgate recall will begin June 28, 2019, when dealers will repair the tailgate latches.

Concerned truck owners should call Chrysler at 800-853-1403 and ask for information about Ram recall number V44.
