— General Motors is recalling nearly 90,000 model year 2019 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans because the warning lights for the seat belts won't illuminate for about five seconds after the ignitions are turned on.
Federal safety standards mandate the light should illuminate if a seat belt is unbuckled, a telltale to warn the occupant to buckle the seat belt.
The seat belt will continue to work as intended but without the standard warning chime usually heard from an unbuckled seat belt.
A GM dealership in Canada discovered two vans that suffered from the problem and an engineer contacted the automaker which opened an internal investigation.
It was determined a software change for 2019 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans contain errors that block the activation of the telltales for five seconds after the vans are started.
There are 91,400 recalled vans in the U.S. and more than 7,300 in Canada.
General Motors doesn't know when the van recall will begin but dealers will eventually reprogram the instrument panel clusters.
Express and Savana owners with questions may contact Chevrolet at 800-630-2438 or GMC at 800-462-8782. GM's recall number is N192264500.
Canadian General Motors van owners may call 800-263-3777.
The recall was announced the same day General Motors ordered other recalls, including one for about 3.4 million trucks and SUVs.
