Mercedes says an occupant could properly fasten their seat belt, but the vehicle will detect the seat belt isn't fastened and prevent the seat belt pretensioners from activating in a crash.
Mercedes opened investigations in August based on a report about a seat belt pretensioner that failed during production testing. The automaker and the supplier, ZF Group, determined there were problems with the switch inside the seat belt buckle.
Drivers will likely hear a warning tone and see a seat belt warning light if the seat belt buckle switch malfunctions, meaning neither the electric nor pyrotechnic tensioning will be activated in a crash.
Mercedes says replacement seat belt buckles aren't available, so interim recall notices will be mailed January 25, 2019, then second letters will be mailed once replacement parts are available.
