BMW Recalls 51 Vehicles With the Wrong Steering Wheels
BMW says the steering wheels won't work with the 'active lane keeping assistant' features.

— BMW is recalling 51 vehicles because the steering wheels aren't compatible with the "active lane keeping assistant" option available on the vehicles.

A driver should receive warnings if they don't keep their hands on the steering wheels, but the incorrect steering wheels will fail to provide those warnings.

The recalled vehicles include the 2018-2019 BMW X3 xDrive30i, X3 sDrive30i and BMW X3 M40i.

BMW became aware of the problem in April when the supplier of the steering wheels said the wheels were not compatible with the lane keeping assist feature.

Engineers tested the steering wheels and found the sensors in the steering wheels are what causes compatibility issues. BMW then went to work to identify which vehicles were affected.

The automaker says it's unaware of any crashes or injuries caused by the incorrect sensors.

The recall is expected to begin July 23, 2018, when dealers will replace any affected steering wheels.
