— Fiat Chrysler (FCA US) is recalling more than 3,500 model year 2018 Ram ProMaster vans with side airbags that may not deploy correctly in a side-impact crash.
FCA found a ProMaster van with a front door impact pressure sensor that had a fractured housing, so engineers opened an investigation and found problems with the installation of the sensor.
Chrysler says the rivet expands within the plastic attachment of the sensor and causes the sensor housing to break.
Engineers changed the rivets used to fasten the sensors and repaired 1,349 vans still in Chrysler's possession. The automaker determined the problem can be completely random and unpredictable and all 2018 ProMaster vans made before August 23, 2017, could be affected.
The recalled vans were built between July 24 and August 23, 2017.
Chrysler hasn't received any warranty claims or reports of crashes or injuries related to the sensor and airbag problems.
The recall will begin January 3, 2018, when FCA dealers will replace both front door impact pressure sensors by using the correct rivets.
Owners of 2018 Ram ProMaster vans may call 800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T64.
